studio one records and its in-house band the skatalites defined ska music and made jamaican music famous throughout the world. this compilation features classic vocal and instrumental tracks from the skatalites, bob marley and the wailers, delroy wilson alongside super-rare tracks from the likes of ken boothe, the maytals, jackie mittoo, tommy mccook and many more. independence came to jamaica in 1962. the musical soundtrack to this era was the upbeat, energised ska, the first truly jamaican music. ska music and studio one are synonomous with each other. whilst ska was only one style of reggae that coxsone dodd and studio one records would release in its forty year history- with rocksteady, roots, dancehall, dub and much more still to come- ska was the first and defined jamaican music as having its own identity throughout the world.

studio one roots is an important collection of some of the deepest roots music to come out of studio one records, reggae s most important record label ever. this release features many rare and classic tracks that have been unavailable for over thirty years. as soul jazz records continue to delve into the largest reggae catalogue in the world, this release is literally ram-jam packed with classics that you cannot find elsewhere. whilst studio one led the field in all forms of reggae, this collection shows how the depth of its roots music outshone all others. due to the uniqueness of the release, soul jazz records have commissioned sleeve notes to studio one roots by lloyd bradley, author of bass culture: when reggae was king. this is the third in the series of soul jazz records studio one releases following on from studio one soul and studio one rockers.

originally released as the b-side to >life< on black redemption, land of confusion was voiced at ticklahs studio and released in 2007. three years later, ticklah has arranged a new instrumental track around the vocal, adding his own signature out-board effects, percussion and keyboard harmonies to the conscious lyrics of the >commander<. the resulting track and version are a musical gem, melding the dub experimentation of creation steppers with the inimitable spirit of studio 1 and soul syndicate. its no surprise then that jah shaka has offered steady support for this track on his soundsystem time and time again! three years in the making and well worth the wait.

studio one dub 2 is a second collection bringing together some of the finest dubs from the legendary studio one records, kingston, jamaica. dub music was the creation of a generation of brilliant recording studio engineers in jamaica. but although clement coxsone dodds studio one is hailed as the greatest of the jamaican recording labels, and although many talented engineers worked the board at dodds brentford road studio over the years (including sylvan morris, syd bucknor, overton scientist brown and dodd himself), studio one was never typically known as a centre for dub.

the legendary skatalites, alongside the later studio one in-house bands - the soul vendors, sound dimension, soul defenders and brentford road all stars ? were as much a part of the classic studio one sound as were the singers that they accompanied such as alton ellis, horace andy, marcia griffiths and bob marley and the wailers. this album features many of the musicians involved with studio one who literally defined reggae music. from the skatalites members tommy mccook, roland alphonso, jackie mittoo to killer sidemen such as trombonist vin gordon (a/k/a don drummond jnr), saxophonist cedric im brooks, keyboardist and twelve tribes of israel member pablove black. many of the rhythms that these musicians created became the back-bone of the jamaican musical world and their songs have been replayed and re-versioned by 1000s of reggae producers ever-since. the album features classic and super-rare tracks all recorded under clement ?sir coxsoneÊ doddÊs supervision at the legendary recording studio and record label. as well as sixteen killer tracks the album comes with new sleevenotes and photography by dennis morris and adrian boot making this another essential studio one reggae release for connoisseurs of reggae and newcomers alike.

magnificent dub album out originally on the senrab label in 1976, when lloyd barnes spars at the desk were prince douglas and jah upton, in the first months of the white plains road headquarters, and indeed as upton - disheartened by the gang warfare that had crossed the path of the bullwackies disco sound - crifted away.the selection commemorates a series of brilliant sevens and twelves on labels like city line and wackies, and sister labels like upton, versatile, and munchie jacksons earth imprint. core rhythm tracks from jamaica - treasure isle mostly, and then mixed by tubby - had been worked over at the sounds unlimited studio on e 24th street in manhattan. there are few traces of singers, though: the sylvester brothers are singled out by the label artwork here.
baba leslies black horns - next piece to wayne jarretts african woman - is spun out of the opening track. the love joys are like genies in the stunning twin mixes of disco reggae. the track dub unlimited is john clarke s pollution (unlimited dub dubs singjay coverage of the ali-frazier thriller in manilla), bullwackies revenge is a version of the chin chow rhythm, a tribute to the restaurant next door, the chosen brothers talk to the father is represented, and andrew mccallas home by the sea... but it would be wrong to bog the album down in these details - an all-time great dub lp.
