if you ve never heard of it before, that just means its rare, right? this makes the george edwards groups 38:38 one of the rarest private press albums of all time. 38:38 departs from the norm of the genre: instead of a low fi demo quality outing elevated mainly by dealer hype, this album is a haunting piece of music that offers an unusually highbrow take on the archetypal midwestern rock n roll existentialism usually addressed with a solid beat and sneering vocal. crafting their sound out of the many influences of the day, edward balian and ray george created pop music with acoustic guitars and harmonies, heavily reverberant piano riffs, cold sheets of synthesizer, bells and chimes. additionally, the immaculate, eccentric production sounds of beatles recordings were a fundamental inspiration in conceptualising 38:38 as a homespun white album, housed in a plain grey cover devoid of information. after three years spent honing the sounds of 38:38, balian and george pressed 100 copies to shill publishers and record labels up and down the sunset strip. there were no takers, and the george edwards group was dissolved in defeat. decades later, these copies of 38:38 began surfacing in various la radio station inventories and soon fetched up to $400 a copy among psych record hoarders.

the debut of sir richard bishop and his freak of araby ensemble, a talented quartet of players getting deep into the middle eastern mystic. sir richard bishop presents an album featuring hand drums, percussion, bass, drums, electric guitars and a heavy dose of moroccan chanters, all of it captured with depth, detail and sympathy for the eternal enigma by engineer scott colburn. after recording a cover of ?ka?an azzaman?, written by elias rahbani, one of lebanon?s finest songwriters, something dawned on sir richard. half-lebanese by birth, he found himself suddenly possessed to really dig into middle eastern sounds. a pair of original melodies not fully developed at a prior recording session had the arabic inspiration, so these were reattacked and finished in short order. soon, sir richard?s head was flooded with some of the classic sounds spun for him by his grandfather back in his younger days, like farid al-atrache, oum kalthoum and fairuz, along with other personal favourites, such as the guitarists omar khorshid and mike hegazi. in addition to the studio improvisation ?taqasim for omar?, the whole of ?the freak of araby? is dedicated to these inspiring players. in addition to his soul-stirring electric guitar playing, sir richard grabbed a couple of moroccan chanters and blew the house down on ?blood-stained sands?, providing an epic finish to this journey to the centre of one-half of the family tree.

to be still is the follow-up to alela diane s critically-acclaimed 2006 debut the pirate s gospel. that record brought the nevada city, ca-reared musician a dedicated following across the globe (especially in europe, where she recently finished a tour of mid-sized concert halls). considering that early copies of the pirate s gospel were given away to friends in hand-sewn covers just a few years ago, this is not only quite a leap, but a well-deserved one. to be still was created throughout 2007 & 2008. it began in portland, or and was finished in scatters between tours at my dad s home studio in nevada city, ca, alela says. i wanted to record this collection of songs using arrangements which would represent them in their finest form. these songs requested more instrumental filigree than those on the pirate s gospel. it was challenging to delicately yet purposefully incorporate instrumentation into songs that i was so used to singing by myself. i was determined to make it work, because i wanted percussion! i wanted to hear the lonesome bow of the violin! i heard many harmonies in my head, and so i set out to capture them.

the ricky-tick roster continues its vivid expansion in 2009. danish jazzers povo, who have already contributed successful remixes and compilations for the label (check rt010 and rtcd08/rt022), will release an ep s worth of remixes of tracks previously heard on the on the spot compilations. the ep features new interpretations of bennie s groove by finn mickelborg, di-da by sahib shihab, and city blues by cy, maia & robert. povo is a duo consisting of lars vissing and anders peter andreasen. they both reside in the danish capitol copenhagen, which is well documented as a city where jazz had many bright moments during the early days of jazz. while lars is one of denmark s leading jazz musicians/producers anders has been living the jazz life since the late 80 s as a record collector, dj and club promoter. together they form an impressive alliance where lars experience as jazz musician and anders knowledge of the new jazz scene will help them to cross any boundaries. the povo sound is supported by some of the biggest names in the jazz/dance industry like gilles peterson, koop, nicola conte, patrick forge and kyoto jazz massive. their second album will see light in the fall of 2009.
