bei dem album handelt es sich um das einzige, an dem bassist jon walker mitwirkte. gleichzeitig ist es das letzte, auf dem sänger und leadgitarrist ryan ross zu hören ist. beide verließen die band 2009.

bonnie prince billy aka will oldham veröffentlicht mit “best troubador” eine hommage an einen seiner ewigen helden, country- und folk-ikone merle haggard. das werk von haggard begleitet bonnie prince billy nun schon seit mindestens 25 jahren. so coverte er nicht nur bei seinem ersten öffentlichen auftritt einen haggard-song. auch in den folgenden jahre seiner karriere bezog sich oldham immer wieder auf das werk und wirken haggards. das vorhaben, das nun im mai erscheinende album aufzunehmen, begleitete oldham schon eine ganze weile. das ziel war es, an der uralten tradition teilzuhaben, folk-songs an die nächste generation weiterzutragen. fast legte oldham das projekt auf eis, als er im april 2016 vom tod merle haggards erfuhr. statt in einem studio in nashville aufzunehmen, zogen sich oldham und seine mitmusiker zugunsten einer familiären aufnahme-atmosphäre in ein heimstudio zurück. so wurde dem andenken haggards werk durch besondere wärme und intimität würdevoller tribut gezollt.

mit seiner band junip veröffentlichte er zwei großartige werke, arbeitete am soundtrack zu the secret life of walter mitty mit und steuerte gerade erst seine version von how we walk on the moon zu master mix: red hot + arthur russell bei. vestiges & claws wurde fast komplett von josé gonzález in eigenregie aufgenommen und produziert. zuhause in göteborg nutze er eigentlich nur computer plug-ins, um die songs aufzunehmen und dadurch einen warmen, analogen sound zu erzeugen. musikalisch führt das album das fort, was die beiden vorgänger schon angefangen haben: gedämpft und feinfühlig wirken die lieder, die die wunderbare stimme gonzález und sein verschachteltes gitarrenspiel in den vordergrund setzen ohne dabei besonders laut oder bombastisch sein zu müssen.

mit dem album aoxomoxoa sind viele premieren der band verbunden. es war das erste album, das sie ausschließlich in tonstudios in nähe ihrer heimatstadt san francisco aufnahm, im pacific recording studio bei san mateo und im pacific high recording studio direkt in san francisco. es ist das erste album, bei dem tom constanten als festes bandmitglied mitspielte. robert hunter arbeitete nur als offizieller songwriter für die band und mit garcia bis zu dessen tod zusammen. zum ersten mal wurde ein schwerpunkt bei akustischen songs wie mountains of the moon und duprees diamond blues gelegt. somit musste lesh zum ersten mal einen akustischen bass spielen, was er mit dem spielen einer violine verglich, da dieser keine bünde für die finger hat.
