following up the scorching debut release another night, deep&disco recordings sidesteps the sophomore slump with elisco, an infectious electro-funk groover that both cements the labels commitment to quality and expands their musical range.
a chunky nu-disco track with hints of metro area and a catchy vocal hook, the seeds of elisco were planted in the early 2000s when label founder jkriv and lou teti were sharing a loft space in williamsburg, brooklyn. after an afternoon of cowbells and synths, the skeleton of the track had its shape, and their other roomates girlfriend was enlisted to sing the hook. she had no singing experience (or rhythmic sense) to speak of, but somehow it all worked and elisco was born! although its always been a personal favorite of the producer duo, the song remained shelved for almost 7 years until they dusted it off in early 2011 and readied it for release on the newly minted deep&disco recordings.
providing remixes for the vinyl release are the legendary leftside wobble, who turns in an extended and bpm-d-up version quite true to the original, taking the machine vibes to the next level with added loops and fx. brightons alphabet city brings the disco-boogie sensibility to the package with a deep mix that features jkriv on live bass, and whiskey disco regular sleazy mcqueen rounds it out with an indie dance stomper.

after our trilogy of black-labeled records (bigbait005-007) featuring dark and rather technoid house tracks, i.a. by portable, s-max, elektroherde and peter clamat, we now start our white-labeled, hand printed 12 inch vinyl series with a raw and soulful house record featuring three stripped-down-to-the-bone tracks by lee webster and glenn astro.

for well roundeds 11th release bristols skinnz drops a trio of infectious and melodic creations that share a kinship with todays garage and funky house sounds whilst standing apart due to their unique character. you may know sam from his other alias baobinga. he is man who commands much respect for his collaborations with people from a wide variety of musical backgrounds and his ability to channel his influences in an unforced and colourful way.
on the skinnz releases so far he has experimented with more garage influenced beats, while retaining his trademark focus on percussive momentum. however these tracks often flow freely across boundaries and genre limits encouraged to evolve in any direction that creates excitement. previous skinnz releases have already appeared on pinchs earwax label and boka records whilst his debut outing was on one of the first compilations of music that might be termed dubstep – the classic >our sound< album on destructive.

the proposition is a simple one. it was a 2009 when julio bashmore first remixed >heartbreaker< from deadboys classic first release - the >u cheated< ep on well rounded.
he remoulded the garage template of the original into something more immediate, replacing the swung off-beats of the original with driving forward-rhythms and a clarity of purpose that takes absolutely nothing away from the musical impact of the original. this circulated on mp3 and we smiled and danced.
unexpectedly, in 2010 jb returned to >heartbreaker< for a different interpretation. this time around a more haunting approach was the order of the day with cross-fading strings creating a soulful, otherworldly atmosphere. the drop this time also swapped sub bass for punchy 808s. a tantalising further alternative that pointed the way to this vinyl release.

chris duckenfield has done more than a few laps around the acid house track producing and djing since the late 80s, and achieving success through numerous music projects, rac on warp, as swag with richard brown through the 90s and more recently with his popular peoples front & duckbeats aliases. >i really do believe< joyously straddles the disco & house worlds, a rollicking metalic riff, soaring etta james vocal samples, a healthy dose of acid and a serious low end - constructed for sweaty basements & causing a major stir with a few choice drops at the recent electric elephant festival in croatia. new and super talented producer chicagodamn provides a superb remix on the flip, taking the key elements of the original to a strobe-lit warehouse destination in fine style!

as much as track names end up being slightly more than tags and guidelines for searches in the digital era of music in which we live today, the name of the title track says a lot about the intentions behind the artwork. in the case of >the classic age<, it can be considered a homage to the influences that nourished rotcivs career throughout the past years.

daniel solar is one half of dikso, the excellent edits imprint responsible for many a disco-rinsed dancefloor burner over the last year. the hannover native is also one of berlins emergent talents, a dj, producer, label owner and a&r intent on bridging the gap between disco and dance music, while coaxing the techno-loving citys tastes a little further off the beaten track.
as a child of the early 80s, daniel was strongly influenced by synth pop and dance music, before rap and hip hop caught his imagination and inspired his first forays into production. once he had finished school, daniel became more and more and intrigued with house and techno, clubs and raves, and his studio style expanded to take in electro, techno, and deep house until we arrive at today and his latest release: too much light ep.

recorded in late 2010 and mixed in a remote studio during the finnish snowstorms of early 2011, donky pitch present >the trick ep<, by helsinki resident and skweee pioneer v.c. six original tracks of synth soaked computer funk, electro inspired slow jams and colourful hip hop heaters. v.c. has been making moves in the skweee scene since the early days (as a solo artist and as 1/4 of supergroup yt). his combination of layered synths, hip hop beats and that type of funk only found in the cold reaches of the nordic region have scored him releases on every skweee label going (flogsta danshall / harmnia / mssy / ddpop / disques mazout) as well as ramp recordings. we felt it only right that he commanded our first true foray into the scandinavian electro funk sound of skweee.

the a-side contains acid snow. a raw, leftfield acid house ode to new york in 2011, acid snow speaks to the young men with a future and tells them not to delay, the city is waiting. fuelled by classic 303 tweak and propulsive analog drums, acid snow plateaus in a guitar-heavy finale that conjures the spirit of the citys no wave sound – acid snow is no wave house, no house, acid rock, acid not acid, armando on no new york, sonic youth at the warehouse in chicago. out of love for the future, it lays down dynamite on the cornerstone of tradition.

fantastic debut 12 inch from this d.c. electronic group with will eastman, outputmessage & micah vellian. an upbeat vocal house song with a french disco-style intro and feel. the song is an upbeat, hypnotic, piano-laden tune, set on a sparse, almost melancholic backdrop, while outputmessage lends a subdued, soulful vocal performance. perfect for the summer and a potential club anthem. original and radio edit mixes. opening for thievery corp in d.c. fyi: this single is not available digitally for another 3-4 weeks.

rad rice and steven boardman are radical majik. they sculpt bowel-shatteringly funky head-spinners, hewn from bare circuits, and disco sweat. previous dancefloor-botherers include >dub rider<, >spread the hot potato<, >direct action< and remixes for 2raumwohung and andrew weatherall.

following on from last years dachshund skank ep by klic & article.01, we have asked some of our favourite producers of the moment to add their own slant to the originals which previously found their way into the dj sets of martyn and addison groove and gained support from bbc6 music. greymatter continues with his new love for chicago-styled synth and drum machine work-outs with his jacking take on forwards, while pixelord and the hotly tipped gerry read take the track mustard tiger in two very different directions on the flip. the digital release sees the talented new boy blacksmif and hit and hope regular naive machine add their respective twists to round off the release.

wack records return after a short holiday in scarborough. this time fully equipped with giant disco balls, 70s roller boots and flame throwers in order to get the party started right! dj kid stretch hails from greece (dmc greek champion 2000) and his production skills shine in this superb refix of disco got me mesmerized. french veteran dj prosper turns the heat up with his version of disco reach blending soul and electronica. on the b-side smov busts some rhymes and flips it over a melody of a pure disco classic dropped into a vat of tuff beats that result in busta move. the breakbeat junkies collaboration with dj p from stoke u.k resulted in this powerful ball breaker of a tune that will leave you in a slump exhausted from got what it takes.

b&b makes his debut on foot & mouth. after great success on crosstown, rebellion & hot creations, this hot new producer drops the tempo and creates four killer r&b inspired edits. perfect for that end of summer vibe. using some familiar hip-hop licks to great house effect these edits are sure to be huge.. rock them like their hot!!

this time its a full ep from chocky, which features a remix from brooklyns krts. the dscntd releases resist the modern addiction to genre pigeon-holing, instead they focus on pushing a variety of interesting and emotive sounds. this five track ep captures the rich and varied musical inspirations of the mysterious man simply know as chocky. first up is >down with idris<, a beautifully, blissed-out slice of electronica. krts supplies a dusty, broken remix with a deep, creeping progression, these two versions really compliment each other. on the flip you will find the jazzy >can i mither you<, suspenseful but really groovy house music. finishing the whole thing off is the deep as you like >frizzy fuzz<, lovely drums and synths, pure atmosphere. and keep an ear out for chockys interlude/dj tool >ripp off<, it pays homage to his love of sampling...

>they were from downtown, somewhere in soho and boy did they love that drum machine of theirs...< following the stellar trip down 80s lane with the bicep boys, mystery meat returns with two rip-roaring edits from soho808, another rising duo, but this time from across the pond in nyc. these fine gents have been causing an absolute ruckus over the past few months or so following appearances on soul claps social experiment 002 mix (not to mention doing an awesome podcast for soul claps acclaimed series) as well as jamie jones fabric 59 mix, berlins dikso imprint, and being featured on the wurst music ever compilation due out this fall. big tings a gwan to say the very least! here we see the chaps head into edits territory, well sorta. to call these edits is quite an understatement. soho808 give a serious overhaul to two songs of discos past, adding additional instrumentation and tweaking the arrangement big time. first up to bat is trouble and strife, an amazing, slow-burning take on one of the most famous of songs from the past couple of decades. trust us, you cant resist! flip it over for a loopy counterpart, low-slung, sultry female vox and all. mmmm, well bring our meat to suzys bbq any day!

a thick slice of deep analogue house from the crew @ machine age in pittsburgh follows their well received debut on uzuri. 4/4 machine funk with more than a touch of kraftwerk / moroder synth burbling. hard screened jackets.

larry levan meets julio bashmore at soul claps pool party. featuring a remix from noise floor crew (dust traxx) from man with releases on tartelet, jackoff, mothership.

ketama records is russian vinyl and digital label established by famous ketama cafe which is definitely one of the best chill out places in moscow. ketama records was created in 2011 to release quality downtempo, chillout, ambient and leftfield music by the most respectable and talented international artists of these genres.

white rabbits giovanni damico is a house producer from italy. his style is hard to define as all tracks have their own original concept. it is the love for music that you can instantly hear in giovannis perception of house music. house music is dancemusic and the feel in the drums and use of samples make sure of that. this is house music at his best when listened to this 3 track vinyl. be amazed at the subtle crossover between blues and house on the b2 track.

for their sophomore release catapult records presents the debut solo release from the organ grinder aka chico from didz and chico fame, one half of the duo that brought us the outstanding >something new< on doc daneekas ten thousand yen label. >obsession< and >new age people< are back on the old school renaissance tip sharing the same soulful classic tones that underpinned >something new< which got plays from the likes of larent garnier and sinden.
these are two classy modern garage hits that have a back in the day vintage feel, think tuff jams garage classic >experience<, think us garage at its peak, think iceberg chinos and mochino shirts, think everyone having a good time in clubs. both tracks are swingers aimed directly at the dance floor full of soulful vocal snippets, catchy melodies, shuffling rhythm patterns, warm vintage keys and plenty of deep bass.

broken cosmic acid-funk? if thats already a genre, ad bourke for sure is its master. hot!

a debut release for both band and label, parisian duo paradis bring two eloquently produced tracks to beats in space in the form of the >parfait tirage / la ballade de jim< 12 inch (bis001). admirers from afar of dj tim sweeneys weekly on air institution of 12 years (from which the label takes its name), paradis submitted demos hoping they might hack it for some play time. reared on classical and jazz, turned young hip hop rebels, turned teen club crawlers, and then university machine tinkerers, simon meny & pierre rousseau grew out of genre jumping while young enough to stay ahead and settle into music making centered around melody and emotion.

next up in the sofrito super singles series is the highlife underground ep – celebrating the bassline heavy sound of 80s highlife.
on the a-side we have teamed up with new london producer drumtalk for a remix of ghanas mpese mpese band. initially released in 1986 the original track was an extended medley – the remix balances the swing of the original with heavy bass and chopped chords, bringing the track up to date while respecting the vibe of the original – an intense example of futuristic highlife that bridges the gap between hackney and accra.
the flip sees the sofrito crew present a killer groove courtesy of the canadoes dance band, originally released on the rogers all stars label in 1982. a minor key intro drops into bouncing drums, handclaps and a bubbling bassline that build and build into a deep and unrelenting groove…
