crunch 22 takes a major shift from their debut album, expanding their musical breadth into a full length concept lp, based on lewis carroll’s masterpiece of psychedelic literature – “alice’s adventures in wonderland”. keeping raw groove as the core of their music, the band’s musical language now grasps some further out melodies, abstract harmonies as well as thick layers of swirling samples, influenced by musique concrète no less than it is by modern cut-n-paste turntablism.

one-take ambient instrumental travels, composed in strict committee by the trio of kevin blagg, william suran, and dante carfagna. recorded spontaneously in rural arkansas, bulging sub-woofers lope through fissures of skeletal banjo and pitched down pedal steel, while delicately arranged basins of synth and guitar reverberate, providing a steady stream of granular epiphanies. utterly faded, yet still possessing crystalline clarity, these twelve songs continually attain summits rarely reached within the span of four-minute transmissions.

lol is a bit of an unusual project, its just a thing in its own right, its not for anything or anyone in particular, its just an lp made by three bored people who like music that sounds like it did before the advent of the internet. the project was recorded in the bedroom of a warehouse conversion in hackney wick (bedrooms can be incredibly creative spaces, seeing as most of us were conceived in one). they wrote about self-obsession, social anxiety, drug abuse, and failed relationships using pre-21st century recording devices such as vhs tape, 70s valve microphones, analogue synths, cheap argos catalogue guitars, and 80s drum machines.

vicissitude - zu deutsch wandel, wechselhaftigkeit, unbeständigkeit - ist der titel des neuen, dritten albums von maps alias james chapman, das anfang juli auf mute erscheint. schwang im zweitling *tuning the mind* noch der hedonismus des mercury price nominierten erfolgsdebüts *we can create* nach, vermittelt das wunderschöne indie-rock/pop-album *vicissitude* nun die unmittelbare konfrontation chapmans mit der realität: *writing and recording coincided with quite a lot of things in my life changing. although things are good for me now, every song on the record comes from a long period of me having to take stock, to start again almost. i took myself out of everything and had a hard look at what i wanted to do and where i wanted to take maps.* den letzten feinschliff der platte übernahmen produzent und sound engineer ken thomas (sugarcubes, m83, sigur ros), der zuletzt auch an *we can create* mitarbeitete, und sein sohn joylon, der schon als programmierer und produzent für bands wie s.c.u.m. und telepathe aktiv war.

zum 25-jaehrigen nightmares on wax jubilaeum veroeffentlicht warp alle lps noch einmal neu als edles doppelvinyl im gatefold mit bedruckten innentaschen und neuem sticker. das debütalbum a word of science aus 1991 ist ein klassiker des rave-sounds mit den dancefloorhymnen aftermath, a case of funk, biofeedback und dextrous. die im original als einfachformat erschienene lp wurde jetzt als doppelvinyl geschnitten und enthält zusätzlich die drei cd-only-bonus tracks b.w.t.m., sal batardes und e.a.s.e., die hiermit zum ersten mal auf vinyl erscheinen.

im gatefold . das meisterwerk smokers delight aus dem jahr 1995 mit seiner innovativen fusion aus jazz, dub, soul und hip hop definierte als post-club-comedown-trip das genre des instrumental-hip hop/downbeat/trip-hop.

es ist erst ein jahr her, dass skläsh die runde machte: das debut-album des münchener klangsurfers wurde in trendmagazinen all over the place als elektrisierende glücksspirale gefeiert, als entdeckung einer unbekannten umlaufgeschwindigkeit, einer neuen wahrnehmungsebene von zeit. skläsh war (und ist) eine global denkende musik- und zeitmaschine, angetrieben von einer erfrischend renitenten slackerigkeit.
der globus aber hat seitdem einige kratzer dazubekommen, scheint binnen diesem einen jahr um ein vielfaches gealtert zu sein. während leroy zu winterspielen in wien oder sommerfestivals im u.k. eingeladen wurde, gab es ein amokmünchen, ein putschstambul, einen brexit und einen freitag, den 13ten ba-ta-clan, kam unter viel dampf und druck eine auf rechts gerührte stimmungssuppe von zweifellos giftiger konsistenz zum brodeln. bambadea! so ist das neue album in einem spannungsfeld zwischen persönlicher euphorie und europäischem weltschmerz groß geworden.
