Roughly a year on from the audacious Evo 2 EP, the Shogun Audio powers that be are ready to deliver the next killer installment of the unparalleled Evolution series. EP 3 is as you would expect nothing short of stunning. With an array of artists of the highest pedigree, from all walks of drum & bass, this third excursion has been well worth the wait.
Now well and truly an established figure in the drum & bass hierarchy, Rockwell takes the lead with the absolutely dangerous and aptly titled ‘Constantcomplexrhythmicsound’. This is a journey into full-on techno-infused, 303 angry acid D&B that could only have come from the Rockwell studios. The riff’s gonna get ya! Veterans and legends of the scene Total Science are up next with the creeping space fx of ‘Feel Me’. Classic vocal samples ooze through the mix of old-skool breaks and morphing mid over some stomach- churning sub frequencies for a proper late night stepper.
Shogun favourite and all-round good guy D Bridge then steps up do deliver a twinkling slice of future soul music. Don’t be deceived by the title, ‘Not What You Want’ will be quite the opposite as it soothes and moves you with delicate pads and bluenote drops all in the name of great drum & bass music. Finally its remix time as Jubei takes control of one of the biggest tracks from the debut Alix Perez LP ‘1984’. This take on ‘Myriads’ is defiantly dirty, keeping the original vibe alive Jubei goes in hard and comes out the other end with a gnarly bassline groove to finish off the EP in the finest of fashions.
