2008 kam Justin Vernon geradewegs aus den verschneiten Wälder Wisconsins, wo er in aller Einsamkeit sein von der Kritik gefeiertes Debütalbum „For Emma, Forever Ago“ unter seinem Künstlernamen Bon Iver aufgenommen hatte. Aus dem musikalischen Kleinod wurde überraschend schnell ein kleines Hit-Album, das Bon Iver nicht nur eine Goldauszeichnung in UK, sondern auch die Bewunderung von Künstlern wie Kanye West einbrachte. Als glühender Bon Iver-Fan lud er Justin in sein Studio auf Hawaii ein und nahm mit ihm Tracks für sein neues Album „My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy“ auf. Neben den aktuellen Hipstern, wurden auch Altmeister auf Bon Iver aufmerksam. So coverte z.B. Peter Gabriel, für manchen Fan eher schlecht als recht, „Flume“ auf seinem letzten Album. Ganz und gar unbeirrt von dem plötzlichen Erfolg, wandte sich Justin Vernon schon gleich wieder neuen Projekten zu. Mit befreundeten Musikern gründete er den Volcano Choir oder sang als Gast beim Kollektiv Gayngs mit. Vielleicht ein Grund dafür, dass Bon Iver-Fans ganze drei Jahre auf ein neues Lebenszeichen warten mussten. “I was truly expressing myself with that record, and for me, the lesson was – This mentality is being rewarded. Every day you have a choice to actually try to challenge your surroundings or yourself just a little bit, to have that opportunity to do something new. In a Pavlovian way, every opportunity that has come my way, be it Volcano Choir, or Gayngs, or Kanye or anybody, I look at each opportunity to strip away any tendencies of using comfort to do my job. I’ve tried my hardest to do the best job I could, and if I get lazy, I think I would hate myself! It’s this weird metaphor that has infiltrated the rest of my life, too. I don’t think of Bon Iver as a band name, it’s an opportunity to grow and not know what the future is, and not to be afraid and not apologize and express yourself and not buy into anything that seems like it’s commonplace or broken.” Für die Aufnahmen seines neuen und selbst betitelten Albums verschlug es den Künstler so dann auch zurück in seine Heimatstadt Eau Claire, einem ruhigen und abgeschiedenen Ort irgendwo in Wisconsin . “Bon Iver is about Winter, and the Winter seems to be the equalizer around here. It’s the all knowing thing, it’s more constant than sleep, everyone deals with it and everyone is in it. It’s about what Winter means, what everyone goes through, not just the season, but the death of anything, the birth of anything.” Herausgekommen ist eine Liebeserklärung an seine Heimat. “Bon Iver” handelt von Lebenszyklen und Menschen, die sich auf die Jahreszeiten einlassen. Die Songs haben Titel von Orten, wie “Perth” oder “Calagary”, einige real, einige metaphorisch, einige hybrid. Denn sie dienen Justin Vernon immer nur als musikalische Durchreisestation auf seinem Weg nach Eau Claire. Eingespielt wurde das im April Base Studio, das mitten in der verwunschenen Einöde Wisconsins liegt. Zusammen mit seinem Bruder hat Justin die ehemalige Tierklinik in ein Ton- und Aufnahmestudio umgebaut. “It’s an unique space and destination; it’s our home out here. It’s been a wonderful freedom, working in a place we built. It’s also three miles from the house I grew up in, and just ten minutes from the bar where my parents met.” Parallel zum neuen Studio entstand in einem dreijährigen Prozess das neue Album. Tagsüber werkelten sie gemeinsam am Studio und abends an neuen Songs. Vielleicht klingt “Bon Iver” deshalb auch weniger entrückt als sein Vorgänger. Es ist eher ein Band denn ein Solo-Album geworden. Das wird man auch live sehen können, wenn Bon Iver als neunköpfige Band auf deutschen Bühnen spielen wird.
