Fans of electronic club music go into raptures whenever Moritz von Oswald or Carl Craig are mentioned. Von Oswald, who has lived in Berlin for years, and his American colleague Craig, who resides in Detroit, have marked techno and dub music for years like few other artists - von Oswald with his expansive, reverberating, hissing productions in his "Maurizio" and "Rhythm & Sound" incarnations, Craig as a producer, celebrated DJ and remix artist who changes almost any material presented to him into euphoriant dance monsters.

In the third release of the Universal Classics imprint's "ReComposed" series, the duo set about working on original recordings by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, recorded under the direction of conductor Herbert von Karajan. Their concept was the creation of something genuinely new, while integrating into their own work the originals with the greatest respect for composer, conductor and musicians. Von Oswald in particular was predestined for this job, having studied drums with the great conductor, Gernot Schulz, whose own career started with the Philharmonic Orchestra. The musical blueprints for von Oswald and Craig's musical trip were two works by Maurice Ravel, "Bolero" and "Rapsodie espagnole", and "Pictures at an Exhibition" by Modest Mussorgsky. Their adaptations use rhythmical elements of the original recordings - such as the repetitive drum play of "Bolero", congenially brought up to state-of-the-art technological standards - and various lovingly edited melodies: pithy memories of Ravel and Mussorgsky's works which fascinate and inspire more and more in the course of this more than sixty-minute homage. Never before have we experienced such an artistic convergence of classical and contemporary electronic club music!
