the debut homemade weapons lp ‘negative space’ is still fresh in peoples playlists after a unanimously acclaimed release, and has gone on to be used as a benchmark for d&b lp’s that exist on the edges of the music’s periphery. combining function and form with equal emphasis, negative space is an lp full of tracks that dj’s play in clubs as opposed to being largely relegated to online mixes. to follow on from the lp, we selected 3 samurai artists to rebuild their favourite tracks from negative space and have combined this with a tidal track vip from homemade weapons made initially for his dj sets. ancestral voices, the untouchables, and sam kdc all turn in unique interpretations.

negative space is the debut lp from seattle, usa resident andre delgado, known to most as homemade weapons. a producer with a long history in drum and bass, his career hit a powerful stride around 2012 when a stripped back, militant, half speed version of the genre began emerging. andre was in the leading charge of producers perfecting this new minimal approach. using classic jungle break edits as rapid-fire emphasis tools on top of mood-soaked, half-time, kick drum driven rhythms, the homemade weapons style quickly became recognised as one of the most unique and effective approaches to emerge from this experimentation. following on from a slew of successful singles for samurai music and his own label weaponry from 2013-2016, negative space is the result of a refinement, an individual artist perfecting his craft. eschewing the filler approach often taken by dance music artists approaching a full length lp, negative space is 12 tracks of what homemade weapons does best essential dance-floor weapons for those tuned in to this new strain of drum and bass.

continuing the samurai music 10 year anniversary celebrations, decade (phase 2) is a further collection of tracks that map out our distinctive approach to 170 / drum and bass in 2018. commencing with a searing slow burn from ancestral voices, phase 2 features a rare 170 track from asc, a dubbed out contribution from calibre, refreshing beat pattern sorcery from sam kdc and lemna and a crucial collection of half step floor freshness from label staples - homemade weapons, the untouchables, torn, last life, and artilect. shiken hanzo and antagonist make their first samurai music appearances in memorable fashion, while es.tereo makes a return on the cusp of launching his own label. presenting advanced angles on a familiar framework, decade (phase 2) is an entree to the next decade of samurai music.

repertoire head north for their first 12- of the year courtesy of rising manchester murker artilect. -something else- is a spacious rolling piece laden with a strong late night desert atmosphere complete with snare-shaking rattlesnakes. homemade weapons is the perfect remixer of choice as he digs his claws into the space and completely switches up the drums to a combo of rolling hangdrum and thunderclap splashes of breaks in all the right sweet spots. finally we get -lost- amongst some superb razor sharp steps, haunted paranoid textures and classic rave-referencing humanised hits. absolutely authentic.

quadrant delivers a tremendous release on the citrus imprint. sinister stringlines changing into ripping basses. of course the percussion game on this one is tight.
