following up on his much acclaimed debut album opal released in 2022, batu heads into a new year introducing a long strange dream : a new imprint dedicated to his spontaneous musical explorations, conceived with the aim to follow curiosities and share his own music in a back-to-basics and spontaneous fashion.

the fourth release of selva discos is one that has been bursting audiences into flames for a good while. barbatuques, a well-known brazilian group of body percussionists, adapted -baiana&#769,,,,,,,,,,,,- back in 2005 (first released on the -o seguinte e&#769,,,,,,,,,,,, esse- album) and since then it became a staple of their concerts, getting crazy reactions from the children to the elder, being featured on soundtracks and sampled by trap duo tropkillaz. the original is a modern folk song from bahia composed by maria do carmo barbosa, but it was the mouth harp sound and the stomping beat on the barbatuques arrangement that imprinted its trademark sound - like the first lightning strikes before the storm. a couple of years ago, jan schulte, the german producer known for his taste for tropical drums (and also for using a few different aliases), heard the song and decided to add an extra punch to it for his dj sets: more drums, taken from a library record of -drumdrops- (hence the title). in his appearance at 2017 s dekmantel boiler room stage as bufiman, he dropped it to the crowd s awe, and it s been like that wherever its played - believe it, it s been tested all around. so now for the first time -baiana&#769,,,,,,,,,,,,- is issued on vinyl. it marks the second volume of the brasingles series, a new series on selva discos dedicated to releasing loud 12- singles with the original song on the a side and a rework on the b side, to please both the dj and the listener.

those who preordered, do not have to do so again - we will contact you when we have stock! omar mccutcheon, operating under his batu alias, has been on the frontline of bristol’s innovative electronic music scene since 2013. in 2015 he founded his record label timedance, a platform for showcasing his tastes utilising a close knit group of young producers and djs. batus glistening broken techno productions are pushed through a deeply uk-sounding prism, one informed by batu being brought up on a diet of dubstep and uk dance music from a young age. trying to tie his sound to those genres however, would be a mistake. having been earmarked already by the guardian as an artist to watch for 2018, batus sound is very much his own. batus rebuilt ep marks his third release in just over a year. not one for complacency, his debut release via xl recordings shows batu pushing his sound forward in every way possible, creating his most uniquely slippery sounding tracks to date. i wanted to try and challenge myself a bit for this ep. every track represents a different phase of experimentation and also different tempos, i wanted to push my processes further than i ever have done.

hot on the heels of his cold outing earlier this month, bristol bewitcher batu makes his debut on hessle and marks their first release of their 10th year of business. timing is everything -marius ripples with an insistent broken drum pattern that s coded with latent funk and dubspace while of court creates even more room between the drums while maintaining the techno pressure. -noseme- flips for a more subaquatic session where the beats adopt a more relentless rolling formation while the groove develops more of a dubby sensation. finally dont brings us back up the surface with a soft beatless thrust. play safely.

obbatuké are an 8-piece rumba group from santiago de cuba, lead by renowned quinto player carlos guerra. the band are mainstays at the casa del caribe, widely regarded as the epicentre for the eastern rumba scene.
rumba is a percussive-led genre descended from africa which was formed when mixed with spanish influences in the ports of havana and matanzas.
as innovators in the genre, obbatuké have been a huge inspiration to the manana project, and were involved in collaborations at this year’s event with plaid, quantic, nicolas jaar and london based breakthrough act, ariwo. this particular session was recorded at castlesound studios in edinburgh on the band’s first trip outside of cuba. it features three different sub-genres of rumba and an extended yoruba bata piece called orun seco.

having previously used their dnuos ytivil offshoot to release material from their nearest and dearest (think batu, bruce, hodge and alex coulton), bristol’s livity sound crew turns to unknown french producer simo cell. the two tracks showcased here are a rather fine introduction to this newcomer, with opener “piste jaune” offering a clandestine blend of stuttering electro bass, discordant analogue percussion hits and spooky electronics. the mystery man goes for the jugular on “cellar door”, with pitched-down, bleep style melodies and liquid electronics riding an off-kilter, broken techno groove. another fine livity release.

after releases on livity sound sister label dnuos ytivil and cold recordings, batu returns with his own new imprint timedance. the label is set to offer a platform for hybrids and mutations of uk techno, and the first release will be launched with a party in bristol on 20th february, where batu is joined at the cavern club by beneath and transient. the release showcases a progression from batu s first two 12 s, with more colour and melody than his previous work, sitting alongside waves of propulsive percussion.

big, bad batu steps forward with two a-grade dancefloor weapons, stealthy and hard-hitting cuts from one of bristol’s most fresh-faced producers, presenting two trax from the dubplate vaults for the 7th plate on hotline recordings.

following on from the success of their self titled label compilation in october, the livity sound collective returns for a final transmission in 2013 courtesy of their sister label dnuos ytivil. (pronounced livity sound, if you were wondering…) a strictly underground operation, its manifesto is to release music with a shared aesthetic to its parent label and it did just that earlier in the year, delivering two dancefloor bombs by manchesters alex coulton in the form of the *war games / pointe noire* 12 inch. *spooked* and *clarity (dismantled)* are both produced by new uk based artist batu whose signature alien dub dance and snaking hypnotic rhythmic styles reflect the mutating underground uk and round off a killer year for the label as a whole. this 12 inch follows on from batus debut vinyl release on pinchs cold recordings label.
