syl johnson began the 60s a blues singer and session guitarist and concluded it having synthesized his own brand of gritty chicago soul. their first signee, syl johnson set the tone at twinight records, writing and producing fifteen 45s during his four year tenure with the label. this double lp neatly bundles each side of each of johnsons twinight 45s, from the heavily-sampled grunts on *different strokes*, to the ghetto-conscious *concrete reservation*.

syl johnsons karriere nahm etliche wendungen. zunächst verstand sich sylvester thompson als blues-sänger und tourte mit legenden wie howlin wolf durch die staaten. erst später - durch die entdeckung von hi-records - nahm er sich der soul musik und des pseudonyms syl johnson an, mit dem er weltberühmt werden sollte

wiederauflage als vinyl-edition! von künstler willie mitchell 1971 für hi-records unter vertrag genommen, entwickelte sich syl johnson neben al green und ann peebles zu einem der erfolgreichsten soul-künstler des labels. -total explosion- ist sein populärstes solo-album und enthält den größten hit -take me to the river-. dieses stück gibt es auch in einer interpretation von al green, jedoch ist syl johnsons version deutlich langsamer eingespielt, so dass diese eine gänzlich andere wirkung entfaltet. syl johnsons tochter ist die r&b-sängerin syleena johnson, die er bis heute künstlerisch berät und begleitet.

whilst not the first uk dance scene the mods had that covered – northern soul is the longest running. those northern clubbers who eschewed late 60s psychedelic fripperies for obscure old soul records with the requisite beat, couldnt have known what they started. after using up all the uk released sides they began digging in the united states and after nearly 50 years the northern soul scene has probably unearthed more great music than any other. all night long is our tribute to those pioneers and includes current in-demanders such as the sensations demanding man, classics by the chandlers and ernest mosley and a host of other dancefloor friendly masterpieces. all night long, can you feel that beat and extra added soul will be available on cd & double vinyl and are compiled by dj and award winning compiler dean rudland, with stunning artwork from his long-time collaborators the unknown. across the three volumes there are 60 tracks of soul, funk and boogie.

it really feels like we (aka mad mats & tooli) have been around way longer than 5 1/2 years with local talk, but it s really true what they say, time flies when you re having fun! from what started as a somewhat simple and almost primitive urge to create a small house imprint has now grown into a much bigger affair. we really tried hard to keep the label from getting stuck in any genre (remember 90s house?) and to always keep the local talk relevant, curious, diverse and with a healthy dose of underground mentality. from our very first release with bassfort s excellent moon shadow in the summer of 2011, we had a crystal clear vision of what local talk should represent...house music in any way, shape or form! over the years we released soulful, disco, jack, afro, vocal, deep, jazz, tech, latin, old school, acid, uk, berlin, new jersey, detroit and of course chicago inspired house music. if it made us bump...we put it out! this brings us up to today and about +80 releases later. we thought about how we best could sum up these first 5 1/2 years and immediately the image of blaze s classic album 25 years later popped up. besides the fact that it s an amazing album cover it also a good representation when different musical genres fuse together. it s not strictly a house album but just as well a r&b, reggae and soul album. this fusion and variation of house sounds is something that we ve tried to capture on our 5 1/2 years later compilation, split into two parts. on part 2 you ll find a high energy disco rub from parisian s3a, a truly deep and soulful vocal jam from boddhi satva & sly johnson, a deep uk garage production from smbd (aka simbad), a dark and electronic affair from toto chiavetta (yoruba) and finally a musical acid number with that magical bristol touch from newcomer marcel lune. all in all we think we got most angles covered and hopefully this album will make you spread that chalk on the dance floor and get down...local talk style

there is a lot of confusion with regards to the modern soul scene. an off-shoot of northern soul, it initially mixed new release independent soul, with post late-60s soul that didn’t fit with the northern scene. they championed a lot of great records, but this was the mid-80s and it now seems odd to describe nearly 50 year old records as modern soul but somehow the name has stuck. extra added soul luxuriates in this contradiction, as it allows us to mix up the boogie like love explosion by donnell pittman, with two-step chicago classics by elvin bishop or el anthony, or the danceable sweet soul of dysons faces with gil scott-heron alike patience by rokk. amongst the twenty tracks there is also room for a touch of prince on 94 easts exceptional if you see me and the cosmic soul of karriems super rarity i love you. on the 14th october 2016 j&d records release three exceptional compilations that look at vintage african-american music through the prism of uk club culture. all night long, can you feel that beat and extra added soul will be available on cd & double vinyl and are compiled by dj and award winning compiler dean rudland, with stunning artwork from his long-time collaborators the unknown. across the three volumes there are 60 tracks of soul, funk and boogie.
