balancing the classical with the spiritual, the cinematic with the introspective, and sensitivity with a distintly brazilian groove, notes over poetry,a new album for far out recordings, calls upon the inspiration of the many musical and artistic greats philippe has been surrounded by throughout his life.
presing on 180 gram vinyl.
powell unveils his brand new single ‘insomniac / should’ve been a drummer’.. his second release on xl recordings. following on from the acerbic ‘sylvester stallone / smut’ double a-side released earlier this year, the new single continues to blur the lines between contemporary club music, punk and forward-thinking computer acid. describing the music is a challenging prospect… but dancing to it isn’t. both as an artist in his own right and through the music released on his own label diagonal, oscar powell has established himself among this decade s most singular, exciting artists. the music is tough, but always playful.
powel aka paul christie is a berlin based dj/producer, and a relatively fresh name on the underground house circuit. christie has previously released material with some exciting new labels, namely, berlin-based label keller, wunderbar recordings and deliciuse, here he joins the fina roster, well and truly putting him on the map, and slotting in alongside move d, cottam and leif.
londons powell works with opposites, in a way that is delightfully disconcerting. his tracks, on the surface, seem relatively uniform - but listen closer, or at punishing volume, and they teem with detail: wiry guitars, sinister yelps, synth figures that fizz like bubbles through sparkling water. across two eps in 2012 for his own diagonal label and one for death of rave in 2013, he has established himself as one of the uks most unique electronic musicians.
SHAKE THE BIRDS OF THE TREE EP (LAKE PEOPLE REMIX)
12" Vinyl D21.02.13
there it is - wunderbars number 3! we are pleased to present three new tracks by berlin artist powel. he stands for qualities to wunderbar which really fit to our understanding of music. a distinctive feeling for emotional music and an infatuation for details. we are pretty sure he is growing up! the curtain rises with *shake the birds of the tree*, a consistent rollin baseline with cheerful woven melodies which nibbles definitely on the outside earlap. next in line is *i dont waste my tears on you*. the original is sneaking in with discreet sounds until the intro gives way to an instantly touching piano-accord and lashing claps. in consequence all is waiting for the distinctive vocals and peaks! the release is completed by man of the moment lake people. his remix contains a staggering circle of mixed thuds, taps, rolls and flaked beats to chart a more bouncy course.
brazilian guitarist and composer baden powell successfully radicalised and revolutionised brazilian music when his album >baden powell a vontade< was first released in 1964.
powell and his songwriting partner, the celebrated brazilian poet and diplomat vinicius de moraes launched with this album a new style known as afro-bossa, which connected bossa nova, jazz and the heavyweight afro-brazilian rhythms of north-east brazil to stunning effect.
this is a very collectable limited edition (1000 worldwide), exact-repro vinyl edition with a hardback american-pressed heavy card sleeve and also a heavyweight 180 gm vinyl pressing.
fenou no.17 is the first collaboration of powel & lake people aka lake powel. this wonderful symbiosis created two really charming tracks. with its melodious feel of late summer atmosphere these tracks exude charm to unwind and relax, just right for this time of year.
second release on his diagonal label has powell ploughing a deeper furrow into his modern take on the sound of no-wave, ebm / metal-dance and other ancestral, primitive machine music forms, maintaining an icy cool aesthetic akin to that of his his debut release. loosely-arranged , these five tracks hold an off-kilter charm that evokes the rugged intensity of pre-sequencing era post-punk. calling all fans of 23 skidoo, mark stewart and the mafia or new-beat / ebm pioneers, liasons dangereuses, we suggest that you get on this one immediately.
brand new label london label features superb karl o connor remix ! new from london based upstart diagonal comes a four tracker of tough, skeletal rhythms from label boss powell. revelling in mechanical hooks, cold, brittle percussion and unfamiliar time signatures, powell pursues new modes of dancefloor dread but is unashamedly indebted to the past to: (amongst others) the propulsive funk of suicide, the linear surge of nitzer ebb and the uncompromising force of mika vainio. no wave new york remains more of an inspiration than bass-heavy london, as does the vision and encouragement of friend and blackest ever black owner, kiran sande. diagonal would like to thank downwards boss karl o connor regis for his love and support and, of course, for the bleak and brilliant rework he has contributed to this first release. thank you karl...

new from jukebox jam comes something else - a wild carib-jazz flavoured r&b gem flipped with a big and brash big city jump blues number! a neat pairing of two of chris powells hottest sides! the top side i come from jamaica is a totally unique early exotic rnb jam, whilst country girl blues, is a delicious rnb dancehall mover aimed at shakin hips & shufflin feet! bandleader chris powell was a relatively busy in philly through the late 40s and 50s, cutting a raft of jump sides and a number of crooning big-band ballads for the columbia, okeh and grand labels. amidst his releases for okeh lies this curious novelty - i come from jamaica, unlike anything else powell recorded and similarly out of sorts with much of the contemporary r&b sounds of the day. from the off, as we hear odd percussive sound effects over an off kilter latin rhythm, its clear that we are in experimental territory. what follows is a sheer delight - an exotic, jazzy, caribbean themed dancer which always turns heads! this also showcases the first known recorded work of the influential jazz trumpeter clifford brown.
hoj’s ep on all day i dream has been a long time coming. after over 15 years as a dj, this ep marks hoj’s first official release. telefade is a track that hoj had been evolving for some time. after a final session with modd, hoj took the track to burning man where he played it for the first time. lee burridge heard it and signed the tune on the spot. featuring haunting vocals from amega. the second track on the ep is called leap day, named for the day in 2016 that hoj began it. made for sunrises and sunsets, the tune weaves through lush melodies with a bounce. powel’s delicate and refined touch brings a sophistication to leap day.
ijsbrand & gert had always wanted to create balkan inspired music, and hence came the duo stavroz. their music is imprinted with original inspirations while keeping to a jazzy/burlesque influence. the bridge, so it seems, borderlines between minimal and jazz-house.
“i still hang around” goes the deep haus mantra from clouded house (lobster distribution) label boss lukas lyrestam. stockholm born but currently based in london he had this to say about the record… “hang around is equal parts club-tool and introspective banger, for the moment you should be leaving but you got nowhere else to go. scandinavian masters is a solid gold thumper harkening back to the glory days of jesper parnevik.” ”on the flip-side two alternative versions give the tracks new legs. common labour alumni powel (fresh off a tour with lee burridges’ all day i dream outfit) delivers a smooth house odyssey remix while x-kalay mainstay kask goes 100% techno on a remix that takes no prisoners. make sure to keep an eye on the estonian upstart as he debuts on common labour in 2017 with an ep of his very own.” hang around ep is a vinyl only release, limited to 250 copies worldwide.
ltd 2016 repress !! presenting its third offering, common labour offers up a various artists release. strictly limited vinyl only. this four tracker covers all bases and will secure its place in the bag of the desiring wax jock
