after a wildly successful collaboration on thatmanmonkzs turn it out from the lp, columbus-ing, dave aju suggested they should continue their production streak for a new percussive tracks project. at the same time, aju had finally kept his word to legendary bay area club/underground mc and personality, foxxee aka foxxee brown aka lawrence petty, to work on a track together as well. petty being a core part of the infamous ya mamas house radio show on 106 kmel alongside pete avila and david harness that introduced legions of young bay area djs to real house music, includ-ing aju, in the early 90s.

sheffields thatmanmonkz is quite the sonic force to be reckoned with. with an impressive discography across the board, dropping his most recent album columbusing on delusions of grandeur in 2016 and running his own successful imprint shadeleaf, were very happy to welcome him to dirt crew and present his latest ep shade throw. kicking things off rough and ready in true detroit “hight tech jazz style,manna for poppa is a saxed up dance floor bomb ready for the taking. intrinsic divine, a sonically soaring breakbeat outing lightens the mood a little, think classic trip hop meets modern deep house. the cinematic string arrangement is accompanied by freestyle piano and licks of ad-libbed sax over a steady kitspace jam 2017 sees thatmanmonkz team up with new york citys clyde phalanx to create a pure psyched up space house outing. we can picture this one over a sun-drenched balearic scenery or deep in a dark and smokey basement somewhere. jazzy freestyle drums underpin a live guitar improvisation that gets truly nasty on this interplanetary journey. slow and sexy is the tempo for the closing track. evolver is a soulful disco burner reminiscent of idjut boys, grooving along with smooth rnb vocals and salacious keys while intoxicating strings lift the energy to pure cosmic goodness.

having unleashed the beast that is his debut lp columbusing, thatmanmonkz grants a couple more heavyweight producers permission to get busy with the sonic manglers for remixes of turn it out and boogie down. first up, one of the vocalist contributors to the lp dave aju (known for his releases on circus company) takes on his own track turn it out, transforming the original from a backyard bbq summer jam into some kind of mutant electro p-funk meets broken- beat fusion. a filtered bass line and bare bones 808 kicks are what this track is all about forming the perfect rhythmic union with the vocal.

2014 was a big year for scott moncrieff aka thatmanmonkz. not only did his own label shadeleaf become firmly established he dropped brilliantly received releases on both kolour ltd and here on d.o.g.

thatmanmonkz is certainly enjoying a fine run of form ! heavy duty releases for delusions of grandeur & kolour ltd, alongside a steadily building and essential catalogue on his own shadleaf music label for their fifth outing the label has opted for a split single, with french house royalty ludovic llorca aka art of tones handling a side duties ‘so worried’ marries a spoken word vocal with an irrsesistible clipped organ led and bumpin’ house workout that sounds a lot like fellow frenchman st germain did way back when. monkz handles the flip with the kind of rough and ready sample-house jam the label has championed ‘got to get to’ strings together a handful of live instrumentation & melodies in classic collage style, while the dub strips down and houses up the ingredients for a clonked out finale.

having made a nice splash for himself with his recent outing on delusions of grandeur and recent string of quality releases on his own imprint, shadeleaf, we are proud to welcome in thatmanmonkz for our next release on kolour ltd. he serves up three immense cuts of deep, underground rhythms with that infamous touch of soul that is quickly becoming his own trademark. remix duties were laid upon someone weve had our eye on for quite some time now - glenn astro. his unique musical vision & precise execution is on full display with his remix of remember and the end result speaks for itself. needless to say were very excited to have him in! altogether its an exceptional package of tunes more than worthy for the 16th slot in our kolour ltd catalogue!

time to welcome more new, undiscovered talent to the fold, this time we give you sheffield producer thatmanmonkz with an amazing ep entitled please dont slip, trip or fall off. thatmanmonkz came to our attention last year when his track that would be alright appeared on tone control music. the low slung, bluesy inflections combined with moodymann-esqe vocals and deep pads had us instantly hooked so when he presented us with three brand new tracks for delusions of grandeur we literally bit his hand off.

tone control music proudly introduces thatmanmonkz 2nd ep, overproof. this follow up to debut ep, the man continues monkz exploration into detroit, disco and soul influenced deep house. lead track, overproof takes mid-tempo, modern boogie from soul into darker territories, while right on gives a nod to detroit old and new, before closing out in percussive yoruba style with long time vocalist collaborator, pete simpson. throughout this ep thatmanmonkz utilises his mpc, rhodes, bass guitar and a multitude of synths to raw, rocking effect. martin atjazz iveson lends his hear on mastering duties to complete another solid ep in the series.

uk residents lee dearn & chris james crowther comprise the deep house duo better known as purple velvet. in addition to running their own label, secret reels, the boys have also had releases on labels such as local talk, dirt crew, & large music. their brand of spaciously deep, soulful deep house is a perfect fit for us here at kolour ltd so the combination of forces was inevitable. for extra measure - we ve assigned remix duties to our dear friend thatmanmonkz. fresh off his smashing lp for delusions of grandeur, our boy scott delivers the goods in prime fashion once again to help us round out our 25th release on kolour ltd.

marking its 11th release, leicester-based label city fly welcome philpot regular tim toh to its already impressive roster spanning dj nature, fred p, andres, medlar and basic soul unit. the berlin artist is also renowned for his works on the likes of ornaments music, delusions of grandeur and mild pitch, and his idiosyncratic vision of electronic music is one shared with the discerning minds behind city fly. ‘endlessly’ is a track that melds interlinking rhythms with vocal snippets before easing in to a beautiful rhodes sequence containing all the hallmarks of an absolute floor filler. ‘everything’ then features the beautiful vocals of ranavalona to engineer a track dripping with pure soul, making way for a remix from thatmanmonkz that focuses on rhythm whilst boiling the piece down to a slice of timeless house. finally ‘expectations’ is a number exhibiting toh’s avant-garde approach to music production whilst still focusing squarely on the dancefloor.
