with its first release of the new year, life and death is proud to introduce the newest members of its formidable and tight knit family, woo york. hailing from the ukraine, this hard working duo has been successfully making the transition from local heroes to major international players through their crafting of strong, emotive techno accompanied by a live show notable for its improvisational streak, allowing the guys to stay true to the spirit of the songs while still adapting them to whatever setting they find themselves presented with.

ukrainian duo woo york blast back to soma with yet more hypnotic, analogue based techno with the siberian night ep. the duo are on fire right now after a string of releases on their new home label of soma and this ep is backed up with a remix from the glasgow based edit select who bringing his own, unique stylings.

following their ongoing relationship with soma records, ukrainian duo woo york are set to release their new record that proves to be somewhat representative of recent dramatic events in their country. entitled i am against, both the main track and the ep itself are referring to the developments that lead to revolutionary struggle of the ukrainian people. fighting inequality, saying what you have to say and doing what you have to do seem to be the core ideas of the record. you might have figured that out yourself by spotting a rebel protester from january’s clash with riot police depicted on the record sleeve. the ep also features a special remix from uk techno producer, Ø phase. music-wise the ep presents the same idea: the epic energy of the title track highlights the drive that was fuelling peaceful individuals to go out onto the streets and fight for their rights. an excellent remix from Ø phase follows a similar path, although in its own original way that has made the uk-based artist’s name associated with the finest techno to date. closing the ep ‘in the end’ is a more abstract side of woo york’s music works that reminds us once again: every single act of violence is bound to come to an end at some point.

the infamous planet rhythm imprint is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2014. 20 naturally is a landmark-age and shows the label s ongoing persistence and hunger to catch the right beat. over the years many sounds within the techno genre have been showcased on this warm and respected home. coincidentally the label (now situated in rotterdam) just got onto a new a new flock of producers making their way into the crates of respected djs and like minded people wordwide.

while some of you might think of planet rhythm as one of those old labels from back in the day, it may not necessarily be the correct judgement. not only is it a product of its past achievements, but it is also pushing things forward in the present time, with woo york being one of a few new artists emerging from the imprints recent catalogue. that said, 2014 starts with ukrainian duo taking over planet rhythm headquarters as the labels proprietors and getting in charge of all of its future development. first out of press is the duos own ep highlighting their shift towards brand new, hardware-driven studio setup. from abstract tb-303-ish structures of acid rain, through the building peaks of analogue swamp, a perfect example of stripping functional techno, to come closers uplifting trance-y melodies and the closing sequence of strobe 1, this record is shaping up to be woo yorks strongest release to date.

pt.ii sees tale of us collaborating with ovend, a french producer whose only prior output is a pair of eps for amandra s ahrpe label. mathew jonson, hunter/game and keith carnal are also among those making their afterlife label debut, while recondite, woo york and aether are back after previously appearing on the label.
