much may have changed over a two-decade period, but drumcode s commitment to releasing the scene s most cutting-edge and refined techno remains resolute. 2017 has already seen releases from adam beyer vs pig&dan, alan fitzpatrick, ilario alicante, julian jeweil, as well as a debut album from layton giordani. the label continues push forwards, bringing fail-safe, club-ready music to the techno community. perennial pushers of the techno envelope, dense & pika are renowned for their standout studio output that seems to constantly conjure up a particularly unique take on their distinct sound, d&p have rather outdone themselves in 2017. kicking off the year with a selection of back catalogue remixes from the likes of danny daze, scuba, slam and yotam avni that illustrated the high esteem in which d&p are held by their peers right across the spectrum, from heritage acts to current headliners and cutting edge talent, the duo have gone on to drop bomb after bomb after bomb. their universally lauded remix of tiga s louder than a bomb was the first of a run of chart topping cuts, with a remix of me & her s wild rage on jamie jones hottrax imprint and their own casino single both challenging the norm of what techno sounds like in the here and now. cooked up with a more melodic vibe and fusing elements of house and techno, dense & pika s latest outing on drumcode offers something different compared to their previous work. there is still that vintage feel to each of the tracks with analogue sounds and arrangements born and developed from experimental studio jams. indeed, suki heavily utilizes the distinct harmonic tones of the dave smith prophet 8 keyboard. while little sun - a staple of d&p performances over the last three months - delivers a more classic drumcode sound. lanky closes out the release with an infectious slab of wonderfully wonked-out raw funk

dense & pika s latest drumcode release comes in the shape of a heavy four track ep, calf ep . the four tracks showcase dense & pika s signature industrial and dynamic style, each track bringing its own unique sound to the release whilst being unified by the sledgehammer intensity throughout. the release is laden with sporadic vocals, clanking samples and serious kick drums throughout - another heavy hitting, ear whipping release from dense & pika.

dense & pika move back to home territory after a dalliance with other labels with their first release on their own offshoot label kneaded pains. * delta system* is classic d&p with a typically grimey warehouse feel whilst * mitten* is no less devastating with the lauded duo s troupes in full effect.

alex jones brings his dense & pika project to home base on the ‘lynn’ ep, delivering, alongside partner chris spero, a storming 4 track single for hypercolour.

release no.4 for the mysterious dense & pika. >who cares wins< is another slice of grimey warehouse rawness, the kinetic drums and synths combing for a peak time cacophony of sound. flipsides >morse mode< ups the tempo whilst still keeping the duos signature rough vibe whilst >crackling< rounds things off nicely, more streamlined than the previous tracks with a touch of dub techno thrown in for good measure.

dense & pika return to hotflush with their first original material since last year s smash, colt . meanwhile they issued a chart-topping remix of paul woolford s erotic discourse with a signature bombast that carries over into the present klank ep. six tracks leave plenty of room for variety, however, from the toecap shuffle of the eponymous lead track to bad ink s melodic grand designs, through slacker s binary jack and the pared-down house groove that is slowhand , not to mention the aquatic depths explored by wandering hands , we see dense & pika s muscles at full flex.

chris spero (otherwise known as uk house and techno producer glimpse) and hypercolour co-founder and producer, alex jones, return once again as dense & pika to the hotflush fold with move your body back. having crept out of the shadows back in 2011 with a collection of white labels released through their own eponymous imprint, dense & pika went on to bolster their rising profile with the release of their hotflush debut (crispy duck) which landed late last year as well as with their memorable live set at hotflushs recent boiler room takeover. there is nothing chin-strokingly complicated or needlessly over-worked about their productions. they make interesting techno aimed at the dance floor and move your body back continues with this central aesthetic. the three track ep plunders percussive depths by way of stern machine rhythms, swollen low-end grit and the echoing, anthemic elements of warehouse rave techno. the title track of the ep may already be familiar to many having appeared on their resident advisor podcast in march and is already being played out by maya jane coles, boddika and adam beyer, amongst others.

after the supremely well received first release vommee which featured on sven vaths recent cocoon mix cd,the mysterious dense & pikas next release well could be one of 2012s biggest -buttplug is the lead track (already dj mags killer tune in its recent december issue) - a kinetic powerhouse ride of roughed up beats & bass complete with a jacked up female vocal from an anonymous source. if that wasnt enough, flip side track cartoon heart continues the high octane thrills with a phunked up house number, the duos tight production giving the track an edge over legions of derivative here today, gone tomorrow fillers.

swiss duo me & her join the hottrax roster with a robust release featuring british duo dense & pika and detroit’s dj bone on remix duties. with recent appearances on deeperfect, natura viva and clarisse records, the rising duo has quickly cemented a reputation as ones to watch since making their production debut back in 2014. joining them on the release is dense & pika, who have been taking the world by storm whilst releasing on leading labels such as adam beyer’s drumcode, scuba’s hotflush, not to mention renowned uk imprint hypercolour. meanwhile, dj bone needs little introduction having paved the way for quality techno for over two decades including running his renowned subject detroit imprint. sturdy kicks and intricate effects drive ‘wild rage’ forward before introducing metallic snares and animated melodies. on the other hand, ‘thunderstruck’ is a dusky production composed of heady stabs and echoing elements that together generate a compelling groove. dense & pika’s shuffling remix of ‘wild rage’ shines a spotlight on a tantalizing synth as eerie nuances operate throughout, before dj bone concludes the package with a trippy and percussive reinterpretation of his own.

moby is a name synonymous with us all in the electronic music world and we are lucky enough to have been able to hand select some drumcode artists to remix his work. this 9 track package included remixes from enrico sangiuliano, dense & pika, bart skils, alan fitzpatrick, marco faraone, tiger stripes, manic brothers and luca agnelli. each one has been thought out and accomplished with precision using some of moby s synonymous samples. the fourth & final part features the dense & pika remix of natural blues as well as marco faraones s whitelandvox remix of natural blues.

it would be fair to say that hypercolour, the uk label founded by alex jones and jamie russell, have come a long way since the label’s inception 10 years ago.
