with uncompromising deliberation jerome sydenhams imprint ibadan records forges its way through the overcrowded world of electronic music in search of diamonds. case in point: quell with his debut solo album them crowd kids. this montage of house music is a fitting addition to a label thats featured some of the worlds most poignant, illustrious and visionary dance music producers, including the likes of dennis ferrer, kerri chandler, joe claussell, function, joris voorn, and radio slave to name a few. quell, already a dominant force in the underground house music scene, has upped the ante with deliberate focus and acumen. through his bespoke style of production, avant-garde dj sets and prodigious thinking quell has come of age. quells music is an amalgamation of images, sounds and nostalgia that derive from his perception of a universal club sound
this time we present you with 3 new names on the labels roster. quell has already been causing waves this year with releases on esteemed imprints like ibadan, 8 bit and these days amongst others. his track >real people< has been a favourite with us since quell sent it out a few months back. steady and with a very pumpy bass, the track builds a very sensual mood reminiscent of the music played at the sound factory back in the days. jack union is a side project from label owner alex tsotsos for his retro sounding house productions. >you can make it< is exactly that. chunky drums and an oldschool sounding organ set the theme for a playful and heavy classic house track. on the flip, we introduce two long time friends the square room heroes. >now is the time< combines modern sound aesthetics with a smokey voice urging you to release the freak. from claap with love
it is not about knowledge only, academic or otherwise, it is and has always been more about understanding each thing for what it is, what it stands for and its origins. this is definitely the case with quell, who has been a friend of the these days records since the very beginning. after the artists collaboration with argy under the these days in-house project moniker >club lonely<, this is his first personal ep for the label. drawing influences from a few distant chronologically, yet classic styles of dance music, starting from disco-flavored house all the way to friendly nods at kerri chandler, ron trent, chez damier and the earlier period of new york citys ibadan records, >perception ep< blends all of them together in a most elegant and mature way. amidst the plethora of the house music sound recent revival, quell presents a very complete and solid proposal, which shows that he adores as much as he comprehends the connections between the past, present and future of this music
poker flatís forward to the past anthology returns in its 3rd iteration, as lean and mean as it ever was and precision-engineered to make you jack, dream and all things in between. the winning formula remains the same: task a selection of hotshot veteran and up-and-coming producers with recapturing the style and mood of early club music, paying homage to the golden years between 1985 and 1992 when chicago house and acid, new york house and detroit techno took the world and its dancefloors by storm.
let go is the first single taken from the new and 3rd artist album from yousef *in the process of eight*, backed up with remixes from christian nielsen, demian muller and quell. in his 3rd artist album, yousef elegantly marries his desire to labour dance floors with an unquenchable thirst to exhibit the range of musical influences he has developed.
