it’s been three rough years since mirrors for psychic warfare sprang into existence with their startling self titled debut, but don’t think for a second that the time was spent idle, this unit (comprised of neurosis’ scott kelly and producer sanford parker) constructed an even more unnerving and destructive record with “i see what i became,” i know, hard to believe. over the course of these eight bile-rich pieces a sonic abattoir is erected, exploited, and razed. turbulence rises and churns giving way to rhythmic machinations, lights flicker, a grand mal/guignol seizure besets a frog-headed snitch, blood collects in a stainless steel gutter. claustrophobic sudor that evokes all you held dear from skinny puppy, foetus, godflesh, bath tub tina, and wondering where the fuck you will sleep, provided you ever do. there’s nothing fun here, nothing but the cold of an autopsy followed by the heat of a crematorium. a sliver of galvanized bone flies from a circular saw into the toothless maw of a streetwalking kali yuga. good or bad, i’m not sure what we did to deserve this.

after their recent samurai red seal debut, mosus and hlz aka need for mirrors return with yet another diverse duo of tunes further displaying their confident versatility. >fishscale< is disturbingly heavy in the low end, so much so we advise planning your sets around it as it makes most other recent drum and bass tunes sound like the bass kill switch is on. the tunes strident step and familiar vocal connect the dots between vintage jonny l and doc scott productions and the year 2011. >retrograde< is the darkest tune to ever be released on samurai red seal. its ragged beauty caught our attention instantly though, and many a crowd has fallen victim to its cute malice. dj bailey (metalheadz / 1xtra) has been one of this tunes strongest supporters.

perfect records returns with a fully rounded release by danny scrilla. the a side, “mirrors” features talented singer alis beautifully tagging along on a very scrilla trip to space. on the b side, “can of worms” is an intense, sub-heavy roller that’s been blowing up soundsystems left and right. the final track on the ep, “wipeout”, is an absolute hoovery head-nodder for the dancefloor-inclined.

having given us a taster of things to come back in september 2016, with the pressing matters single, the cyclist returns to hypercolour with a brand new, full length album. and as the title suggests, sapa inca delirium leans heavily on south american mysticism, not just musically, but in the visual imagery that the eleven-track album paints so well across its various tempos and rhythms. from the tropical burst of mood setting opener, go back to the steamy and pacey percussive flow of inhale/exhale which features regular collaborator tanaya harper on vocals, the cyclist’s fourth long player is crammed full of intriguing atmospheres and soundscapes. antiexist, with its down-tempo rolling snare fills and ethereal gregorian chanting segues effortlessly into a blind girl drinks ayawaska, a suitably discordant and hallucinogenic skit that ensures the album flows into the more rhythmic cuts like skateboarding in the jungle and mirrors (the second album cut to feature harper on vocals). even the traditional jazzier vibes of when we all break down featuring joni are kept rugged and boisterous, with heavyweight bending bass, choppy breakbeats and fx’d ambience amongst the smooth jazzy chords and sweet vocal delivery. sapa inca delirium is one of those albums that will reward on repeat listen, such is the diversity of style on show here, and the detailed and wide eyed curiosity offered up across the long players fifty three minutes.
