whim-ee aka sara garcia is a french dj/producer. originally from recife (brazil), she relocated to paris as a child where she began her journey in music via nine years of classical piano schooling. whim-ee later began experimenting with electronic music, injecting her own unique fusion of house, techno, jazz, funk and soul. she also manages her own labels , tao-dan records and w-ee records. following up releases on labels such as got2go, chilli mint music and nite grooves, whim-ee carries influences primarily from chicago and detroit into her forward-reaching productions that are consistently suffused with a tough and gritty sense of soul. very deep and unique in her style and vibe…

after previously exhibiting his remixing dexterity on two other occasions, myles sergé returns to „made of concrete“ to showcase his production chops in a four track ep revealing three originals and one rework. firmly rooted in his hometown of grand rapids, a city along the legendary detroit-chicago axis, sergé stays true to the musical hallmarks that made history in the scene, sketching up a contemporary soundscape with haunting old school influences. the ep unfolds as a real treasure trove, with each track digging deeper into the realms of dubbed out electronica, while masterfully blurring the lines between house and techno.

there is a new label on the horizon and it s first release is all about warm heavy detroit influenced deep techno. another earth combines 2 acts together in a split ep series which compliment each other s sound. the a-side hosts the renowned u.s. based producer, myles serge (ms - re(form)) who, for these 2 tracks, let his machines run crazy beat patterns in a old school detroit techno vibe. the b-side features dutch based duo duijn and douglas (esther duijn and steady douglas). their stripped warm heavy padded deep techno influenced tracks are perfect for creating some heat on the dance floor and the b2, stray, is driven by berenice van leer s lush intense voice.

keeping up the urgent pace set by the strength in numbers collection, thema now turns to a modern master of the jakbeat, d’marc cantu. hailing from ann arbor on the fringes of detroit, cantu has worked for more than a decade developing a sound that carries the torch from the box jam originators of techno and house music. his first appearances were alongside the mighty tadd mullinix (better known as james t. cotton) with their 2 am/fm project, before bringing traxx into the fold for the x2 venture. as a solo artist cantu has shored up on labels as highly regarded as crème organization, m>o>s, nation and desire, bringing a rich, full-bodied sound laden with powerful synth hooks, crafty drum programming and a live, jammed-out delivery that overflows with imagination. given his adventurous tendencies and punchy midwestern finish, cantu is a perfect fit on thema and the six tracks that make up this record show a great deal of the diversity the man is capable of, from dancefloor burners to atmospheric introspections.

a hidden recordings mainstay, jc laurent’s once again combines his admiration and respect for detroit’s gritty past with a modern touch that makes his techno / house sound all his own. previously on the label, he released “from nice to berlin” with a remix from the legendary fred p. aka black jazz consortium as well as “southside” with a remix from uk’s tom dicicco (the corner, run out run). handling important remix duties is michigan native myles sergé. first introduced to techno in the late 80’s and described as a ‘reclusive perfectionist’, his haunting productions reflect influences from early detroit / chicago electronic music.

made of concrete release number 11 sees a joint effort from danny kotz and avi caspi in the form of an incursion into the deep end of spacious techno. reject unfolds steadily, as spatial loops intertwine with piercing zippy synths. the laid back melodic outline is aptly layered with sombre french vocals by laurie eve jasmine de larohe which giving the track a mysterious yet groovy appeal. starting off with a subdued bassline, canopy follows a slowly ascending groove, as progressive synths and wavy hooks further the track into deep tech territory. for the b side, myles sergé swiftly jumps in on the reject remix, stripping down its embellishing elements and shifting focus towards the bassline. what ensues is a compact backdrop where the bass and percussion take the lead, resulting in an intensely danceable reinterpretation of the original. stepping away from the murky ambiance present in previous tracks, karat boosts a slightly more vivacious range of harmonics. energetic synths set a peppy, 70sreminiscing mood, while the melody keeps the cut anchored into present day electronica.

alex aq constructed “don’t break” and “shake it” as a reflection of the sounds heard at the club. pounding drums, rhythmic, scattered synths, white noise, and choice vocal snips that send you into a trance are the core characteristics of both tracks created by the cubanmeister.
on the flip, myles serge of knotweed records and his own label (ms) remixes “don’t break it”, taking it in a trippy direction, with 808 drums and dreamy stabs that sound fresher than ever.
last but not least, lpz’s own techno duo p. lopez & octavio take “shake it” and turn it into a techno monster consisting of heavy stabs and an undeniable groove.
