for the fourth instalment of scb remix eps from hotflush, mor elian and hammer step up for their own interpretations of tracks from caibu.
fever am label co-founder and hybrid club producer mor elian provides a spaced out take on ‘fish bowl’ full of angular drums and woozy synths. for his take on ‘test tubes’, hammer formulates a steady groover for the after hours.
caibu is paul rose’s first album as scb. the album builds on material from the below the line, old media new society, and engineered morality eps which explored a fictional narrative in which a hypothetical timeline is corrupted by a climate-related disaster. the title of the album itself refers to an imagined surgical procedure where cognitive ability is augmented through transplant from one brain to another. as such, caibu invites the listener to forge their own ideas on the development of society in the context of crisis.
scuba drops another four cuts as scb on hotflush recordings this december. paul rose first launched his scb moniker in 2010, going on to appear on labels like ostgut ton, aus music and nonplus until 2014. this year saw the pioneering british producer revisit his darker alias with a dystopian themed release on hotflush he now returns with four more twisted and ominous productions.
scuba refocuses his scb project with ‘below the line’, coming this october on hotflush recordings.
‘below the line’ inaugurates a fictional timeline of events set in a hypothetical future. a climate-related disaster acts as a catalyst for a complete overturn in society, the repercussions of which will be explored subsequently.
the british producer has become one of modern dance music’s most pioneering figures, having produced four full-length albums, various eps and contributed mix albums to renowned series such as dj kicks, fabric, and for berghain’s ostgut ton label over the last decade. donning the scb name in 2010, paul rose’s pseudonym for esoteric techno found home on labels like aus, nonplus and hotflush recordings, not to mention its own eponymous imprint.
on the hotflush 12inch two deep, dark and meticulously honed dance floor productions from scb. dj, producer and hotflush label head paul rose/scuba brings his scb alias back to the label with new single rope / technique
sampler 2 kicks off with scbs dissipate, a gritty 4/4 number thats been driving dancefloors crazy with its seemingly constantly ascending intro. this is definitely one of scbs finest productions to date and hugely sought after by his followers. basic soul unit provides the aa side, hot off the back of his debut nonplus 12 he continues in the same vein with untoward. this is heads down techno of the finest quality and this time hes thrown some acid into the equation which bubbles and brews into a monster of a track.
it has been nearly a year since the last single dropped on paul roses scb label, and for 2011 it returns in full force with two brand new cuts. >mace< and >overlay<, both insistent and hard-hitting, further establish the carefully crafted style of the scb project.
scb is a house/techno project by paul rose, better known as uk bass pioneer and hotflush recordings owner scuba. scb was born in 2008 with a now-seminal rework of >hard boiled< from the first scuba album, a mutual antipathy, and has since developed with two full 12inches and remixes of mount kimbie and phil kieran amongst others. >loss / futureunknown<, on will sauls aus music imprint, is the first original scb material to surface outside of roses own circle of labels. >loss<, with its space melodies and repeating vocal slices, builds and builds into a slice of pure unadulterated dancefloor joy, very much in keeping with the musical territory occupied by aus at the moment. on the flip side, >future unknown<, fills out the atmospherics with dark stabs and driving rhythms which eventually give way to an almost scuba-esque brand of floating euphoria
very limited finished copy. after a seminal remix of scubas hard boiled on hotflush in 2008, and the most popular mix of 2009 on mnml ssgs, this is the first proper release from hotflush recordings boss paul roses scb project
scuba continues his uncompromising scb moniker with caibu, a twelve track lp of cerebral techno, darkened disco and broken beats. paul roses career has enjoyed a unique trajectory that affords his reputation as one of the scenes most forward-thinking artists, label heads and promoters. always the risk taker, his hotflush imprint is credited as a key force behind the evolution of bass music, whilst his ground-breaking booking policy for the sub:stance night at berghain opened up one of the worlds most revered venues to new sounds and musical possibility. today he continues to challenge the status quo of electronic music through a packed touring schedule, various artistic projects of his own and a weekly radio show platforming new material. caibu is his first album as scb and incorporates material from the below the line and ‘old media new society eps of last year. preceding the release, a third ep - engineered morality - continuing to explore the fictional narrative in which a climate-related disaster corrupts a hypothetical timeline. the title of the album itself refers to an imagined surgical procedure where cognitive ability is augmented through transplant from one brain to another. as such, caibu and its accompanying eps invite the listener to forge their own ideas on the development of society in the context of crisis. within this dystopic setting, caibu draws strength from introspection. at times trapped in a pressurized container, at others floating through vast spaces, scb merges subdued hypnotism, syncopated basslines and visceral ambience to find his centre.
the third realm of consciousness compilation on tale of us afterlife recordings is the label s most complete statement so far. the full spectrum of the label is on display here, as they continue to push the envelope with a high-quality and diverse selection of artists.
calling in the favors: marcel dettmann, roman flügel and scuba under his scb inversion disguise, take apart songs and tracks from tuff city kids debut album adoldesscent. dettmann, submisses to his new wave and em callings, keeps the song that is scared intact, but mangles it into a fast-paced pogo piece, while flügel uses his second take of rmancer (see the happy gerdy remix for reference) to push it into the k-lauer abyss, before scb inversion tones down the rockism of nordo and makes it inherently his own. to complete the picture, you get thorarium by tck themselves. a previously unreleased track that is basically a remix of a previously unreleased track
