for the 5th in the ele records catalogue esteemed producer cottam brings two killer edits to the table. the a side sees a joyous disco rework, extending and expanding elements to really hone in on that exuberant bassline and string section. flip it over and jigsaw delivers a dusty mixture of afro rhythms and stirring spoken words to entrance any audience it s set before.
following cottams critically acclaimed i cant carry on ep, which marked the inaugural release on fatcat records new electronic sub label fcr, the highly-rated dj/producers new 12inch drops also via fcr. locked in the groove is a groovy, boogie chugger, which powerfully ebbs and flows over nearly 11 captivating minutes, and sample heavy dub is all dark n heady eastern atmospherics, whilst dreaming of another place is a fathoms deep, epic journey into mystical and majestic dub-house. an avid participant in preston s early rave scene, paul cottam inevitably pursued djing, progressing to warm up slots for his techno heroes surgeon and regis. tentative steps into production using ableton were met with such encouragement that cottams debut releases began to appear. a set of four untitled, un-marketed and unpromoted vinyl self-releases created a huge organic stir with record collectors, attentive journalists and djs including moodyman, gerd janson and soul clap. this buzz was helped in part by speculation on his identity, but was primarily due to his simple yet effective, flavour-filled and groovesome tracks that blurred the boundaries between re-edits, reworks and originals, moving between slow-mo chug and more straight-up house, whilst encompassing elements of disco, hip hop, nu soul and afrobeat.
fcr’s first release is the deep future classic ‘i can’t carry on’ by cottam, accompanied by a remix from detroit’s todd modes on the flip. i can t carry on , is a proper chi-style-deep-house-classic-in-the-making, whose layers subtly build over 12 immersive minutes. with a raw driving bassline, deep strings and killer underground vocal sample, it stands up easily against early ron trent and lil louis favourites.
cottam returns to the eponymous label that started his musical journey with a couple of first for the label more than two tracks and a step away from the reworks that have usually characterised this label to more original work with a minimum of samples, all with a nod to pauls continued struggle with illness.
ele records is dedicated to sourcing and sharing dusty, sample based music inspired by the rich soundscape of early hip hop and house productions. cottam s trademark sample based house is back on ele records. delving into his box of records to produce a sample heavy cut slowed down to a sexy shuffling tempo, cottam delivers two dusty tracks for your listening pleasure. combining afro, latin and disco grooves to devastating effect, cottam takes the listener on a journey through the time and space.

like the proverbial bus, you wait five years for a cottam release and two turn up within 6 months. ‘consciousness’ on the a re-works the soundtrack to a classic japanese film into a devastating club track, ghostly vocals combine with dub effects and acid riffs for an unnerving slice of headfunk. on the flip ‘rivers of blood’ starts with a deep bassline and keeps on cranking up and piling on the pressure, until the synths wash in after four minutes and the track becomes a tempestuous torrent of detroitian hi-tech jazz
after the success of his release on versatile and a string of top productions on his own ruff draft label, ferox is proud to welcome cottam to the roster with this two tracker. 180g vinyl only release.
much needed repress of a recent classic.
the second volume in this series of no info and no nonsense 12 inches. channelling the queen of neo-soul and hardest working man in show business through a dub-heavy detroit beatdown filter into wild deep house. for fans of the revenge, mark e and motor city drum ensemble these raw, soul drenched house grooves will appeal to the djs who like to work a floor into a frenzy.
after a five year absence the illusive cottam label returns. since the original series paul has travelled the world djing, released on labels such as aus & versatile and started his own imprint ruff draft for his own original productions and tracks from other producers. currently taking a break from djing & concentrating on production it felt like the right time to reactivate the label that started it all with some new under-the-counter specials. first up we have ‘mixing tool’, a heavy beat and percussion setting the dark & foreboding tone, the unease increasing like something is creeping up behind you until the distant war cries reveal themselves - a deep track that is much more than the title suggests. next up, the long awaited vinyl release for the cottam re-wiring of a classic film title track, mixing the best elements of the originals synth score with a club ready beat and acid that adds to the original - this is one of the finest carpenter reworks you ll hear.
ruff daft returns, and after a various artist ep for number 7, number 8 on the label goes back to the founder, with three new tracks from cottam washed out kicks things off, at the cross roads between mood hut & basic channel where dub techno sensibilities meet dreamy chords for a delectable deep house track. horns harks back to cottam s earliest releases, with an afro-ish horn loop teased out over four minutes until the full loop and bass kick in to devastating effect. a ruff draft sees cottam look back towards his techno roots, with a killer kick drum and raw acid lending an abrasive edge to a well rounded ep of varied styles.
paul cottam was diagnosed with encephalomyelitis disseminata, or multiple sclerosis, just as his first records were released in 2009. the symptoms can come and go, one day you can feel ok and the next day a relapse can floor you.
fifth release from lohouse on townhousemusic. we are happy to present cottam from britain on townhousmeusic 05 vinyl. cottam has concentrated on developing his own style, he did remixes for luv jam on phonica’s label and also some releases on 20:20 vision, quintessentials and wolf music, just to name a few. about a groove thang ep contains three deeply warm house/tech tunes, with a touch of raw and oldshool elements. very special. strictly limited vinyl.
for 07 ruff draft enlists twins who turns in a dark, dystopian, club sound scape that hits all the right spots. hayworth is another alias of a well known producer to us ruff drafters, here he creates a track with an intro that teases and teases you before the beat drops and things get all sweaty. cottam digs out some acid from the hard drive, an old forgotten about track that finally gets a release.
the man behind the end of level boss label, cyclonix, delivers 2 club tracks just the way we like them. already tried and tested in the clubs by our man cottam, who fell in love with the tracks on first listen. they demand to be played in the early hours of the morning in dark basements from nottingham to leyland and beyond. label boss cottam takes over the b side with a leisurely walk back from the supermarket taking the scenic route for no apparent reason.
cottam is proud to present the first release on his new label, ruff draft. paul cottam came to wider attention with a series of limited edition blank-label 12s released from 2009 onwards, showcasing his production talents by re-working afro-beat, neo-soul, funk & hip-hop into deep house burners, but ruff draft is all about original tracks, and the first release sees three tracks from the man himself.
the long walk starts with the main body of the groove, combining the drums, bass and strings into one morphed soundscape. the strings, as if breathing life in and out of every 4 bar phrase, rocks the listener back and forth, as the acid line is allowed to weave itself, almost freely, in and out of the percussive detailing. this builds a bed for the next progression of the string section to reveal themselves, majestically...

cottam shot to notoriety in 2009 with three limited edition 12 inches that blew up the underground deep house and nu-disco scenes with no advertising and no info - combining neo-soul, afrobeat and hip hop with slo-mo house grooves all three sold out in double quick time and ended up in many best-of-2009 charts.
following up his well-received 12inch >deep deep down< on aus in late 2011, cottam re-emerges with another striking two-tracker for the label. originally breaking onto the scene in 2009 via a series of anonymous 12inches — three of which were named in phonicas top 50 singles — he eventually unveiled himself as the humble newcomer paul cottam.
paul cottam is a name synonymous with quality, hard-driving underground house. the preston producer shot to notoriety in 2009 with three limited edition 12 inchess that blew up the underground deep house and nu-disco scenes with no advertising and no info – combining neo-soul, afrobeat and hip hop with slo-mo house grooves – all three sold out in double quick time and ended up in many best of 2009 charts.
breaking onto the scene via a series of anonymous 12inch, it was after garnering reverence as a big name producer in disguise that cottam was unveiled to be the humble newcomer paul cottam. rising through the early rave scene in his hometown of preston, he first cut his teeth as a dj warming up for the likes of surgeon, dave clarke and regis. despite his techno upbringing, it was the slo-mo tempos of mark e and the revenge that inspired cottam to produce his own brand of dusty soul and hip hop-grounded house. however, in april cottam returned to his roots with >sunrise sunset< on use of weapons, sinking a rave core down to his signature slung bpm. it is a journey into sub-aquatic acid house that began with a series of remixes for luv jam, pattern select and morning factory, and one that he continues to explore on his aus music debut. aptly titled >deep deep down< sculpts the feeling of acid techno into warm slo-mo house. ukrainian producer vakula takes the track off on another tangent entirely, stripping away its propulsive chugging heartbeat and replacing it with an off-kilter, spaced-out pulse reminiscent of theo parrish when he s in that kind groove. on the flip, >twang< is a return to cottam s brand of languid, soulful house, steeped with groove destined to incite the dancefloor shuffle.
luv jam - better known as andy cole - made his name through outings on we play house and lany recordings, and >mature oak< finds him in fine form, an epic, atmospheric track poised on a bed of analog synths and warm pads, driven by galloping drum mechanics that gradually give way to its climax, an irresistibly squelchy acid bassline that marks it as one of coles most memorable productions to date. on the flipside we get treated to cottams first ever remix. cottam has made an impeccable name for himself, with his signature colourful series of untitled 12s and a contribution to the story imprint. true to his roots, cottams re-rub of >mature oak< is a slo-mo, motorik chugger that makes excellent use of the originals acid line while taking the whole track a step further. its a proper heads down affair that begs for a soundsystem loud enough to do it justice. limited vinyl pressing of 444 copies – hand stamped and numbered. special artwork by pedro carvalho de almeida.
