over the course of four unforgettable eps released on throne of blood since 2013, hardway brother sean johnston has cultivated a broad international following for his singular brand of dancefloor fodder. best known as one half of legendary dj team a love from outer space alongside the one-and-only andrew weatherall, johnston’s roots in the dance music scene include a clutch of leftfield 90’s era bangers on labels like sabres of paradise and flashcomm. beyond his original output, johnston has also remixed the likes of man power, the asphodells, museum of love, split secs, clandestino and many more. the laser ep is peaktime hardway bros business. friedman feedback loop revision (a nod to tob boss james friedmans highly-valued opinions) is a masterclass in efficient simplicity, elevating a few basic loops into an exhilarating 8 minute monster. the laser rounds out the a side with a classic electro rhythm/bass/vocal sample combo could easily have landed in retro territory. instead, hardway bros easily flips a clutch of oldschool tricks into an utterly modern execution. the b-side finds tobs label manager max pask injecting friedman feedback loop revision with his love for all things analog and italo. with his impressive collection of synths brought to life by chinatown records brennan green, the song is transformed into an epic set closer thats already devasting dancefloors like berlins panorama bar. the ep closes with afro sirene, a midtempo groover with melodic arpeggios built for the discerning djs warm-up set.

in almost ten years of existence, throne of blood has cultivated a diverse family of musical talent spread across the americas and europe, refusing to settle into any particular sound or scene. foremost among this crew of almost-impossible-to-pigeonhole producers is dissident veteran hardway bros aka sean johnston, known to many as andrew weatheral’s partner in a love from outer space. his third ep for the label, pleasure cry, is characteristic of seans style: a modern sound with sly winks to his rich history in electronic music.

for hardway bros first ep for throne of blood, sean looked back to the late 80s belgian new beat scene as well as chicagos storied wax trax imprint for inspiration, turning in two walloping originals that could just as easily soundtrack a gothic club night instead of an acid house rave. on the a-side, a/b musique kicks off the proceedings with a steady lurching rhythm, driving the dancefloor to ecstacy thanks to densely layered synths and the contributions of timothy j. fairplay of the asphodells fame. the flipside features the absolutely devasting rhythms of shorty backed by an utterly epic nine-minute remix by scott fraser which manages to fuse the disparate sounds of new beat and the lush analog house vibes of classic mr. fingers even as it name checks the latters legendary above the clouds lp.

this exquisite disco roughie, paying homage to that sleazy, backroom-disco sound of the boys town gang and skatt bros., is the latest addition to the history clock canon. and ill wager that this is going to be the post-summer smash of the undergrounds counter-cultural disco scene. >cruiser< is a simple, bass loop that grinds and growls like an early weatherall-style groove, beneath some of the most x-rated sociolinguistics that would make even a sailor blush! on the b-side, relaxer is a punchy, proto-house instrumental that sounds like something somewhere between the very early releases on trax and one of those obscure 12? killer dub versions from a mid-80s, uk pop tune

react is split secs first record of 2015 and the years first release from the la duos machine limited imprint. composed of alexandre mouracade a.k.a sonns and travis kirschbaum (tk disko), split secs has put out material on labels such as throne of blood, kompakt, and jolly jams.

this is a special release to us at days of being wild, firstly because it s the return of catalepsia and he s in a mighty form, secondly because we felt very privileged to have artists of the calibre of sean and don getting involved and lastly the quality of the remixes they delivered left us speechless! so dope menace is an energetic dance floor stomper, centred around a very heavy beat and is indeed quite a menacing affair. built around a hellish, relentless string riff, the track is a dramatic, cinematic, dark mid tempo house number that could induces as much fancy foot work as it would head banging. jerome bazzanella, the man behind catalepsia has been releasing techno / house records for the last 3 years on various labels and compilations (synewave, remute, métis recoordings...) he likes to keep the tempo roughly between 110/120 bpm, favouring a heavy, efficient sound, with subtle sound effects and movements, in the tradition of the records from chicago and detroit.
