this is skinnerboxs first release on treat your dj right. on love songs for the broken arpeggiator ep, the two berliners olaf hilgenfeld and iftah gabbai celebrate their own vision of modern dancefloor music in four epic tracks. all music is based on the beat while the sound ranges from acid fragments – over hypnotic, extensively melodies to yet modern club beat.

busking really is next-level in berlin, with the acoustic guitar replaced by the laptop, drum machine and minimoog, all powered by a car battery. it was this thrown together setup that first introduced the world to skinnerbox as iftah gabbai and olaf hilgenfeld took their leftfield, jazzy attitude and improvised genre-bridging music to the streets of berlin for impromptu jam sessions. it wasnt long before skinnerbox were rocking the floors of ritter butzke and wilde renate and getting their music pressed to the black gold was surely the next step...

skinnerboxes first bpitch 12 inch >anapol< is the culmination of about seven years of performing experience. iftah gabbai and olaf hilgenfeld casually juggle colourful house, jazz and funk elements like its their second nature. and the metamorphosis from anarchistic improv chaos to form and structure in no way impinges on the level of energy in their music - in fact, just the opposite is the case, as the newly discovered sense of auditory space in the tracks allows them to significantly concentrate each tracks power.

the skinnerbox disco jazz opus >king of spades and marmalades< (album mmxa0903lp) has not even been digested properly û yet these electronic nerds have hurled into work again. first, an own branded synthesizer for abletons collaboration software max4live was developed, and now a new maxi is ready to be out.

the particular view on a musical future might have been considerably different when olaf hilgenfeld (berlin) met iftah gabbai (jerusalem) for first sessions in 2004. the piano player hilgenfeld used the accordion that time mainly, whilst gabbai was using all instruments available, a computer was among those more by chance. only one year later the duo skinnerbox played regularly on such uplifting, innovative off-partys that came up in the new techno generation again.
that was just the beginning. skinnerbox have developed a purely electronically composed and performed music (partly featuring vocals by elle_p) – that is not based on loops but improvised techno inspired house and minimal house. the roles in the duo are clearly settled: olaf hilgenfeld – moog synthesizer, iftah gabbai – hardware drum machines, max/msp und ableton live.
all these distinct impacts and effects can be heard on their various releases from the last two years, but far better in their live sets. skinnerbox are an experience, taking you on expedition with paralyzing minimal, breaking house, hard-edged techno-jazz, and ambient electronica futurism.
it was a desire to eternalize this play- & colorful diversity, often just caused by the moment, as entire homogeneity. thus, they needed to leave temporarily their environmental techno and minimal house scapes. >king of spades and marmalades< – the result – is a jazz opus wrapped into a disco suitcase. it is a reminiscence as well as going far ahead of daily musical habits, shown not at least by the order of tracks, do not starting with a stunning hit of the album, but with 20 minutes of challenge.

naked cowboys is a groovy soothing hypno-groove. surrounded by naive swing sets and dreamy ambient pads. building up to an almost mystical level that carries the listener through total ecstasy. the b-side of this production is occupied by swedish pioneer producer patrik skoog aka. agaric... 2009 re-release

catchy minimal.. jatoa002 is the second release from the danish label jatounit. binar sendentar is a mellow straight forward track smothered in glitches and industrial mishaps. accompanied by a female voice - a constant reminder that it is all numbers. beautiful staircase is an orgy of pretzel popping, toy car bashing and wrench crashing glitchy pads. accompanied by harmonica stabs. suddenly a trancy pad surrounds you and lifts you up and literately drops you in a hole of obscurity and insane analog bastardism.

supported by mia, ada, krause duo, ruede hagelstein, jake the rapper, daniel dreier, gianni vitiello. their latest works came out from sessions they did together with mademoiselle elle p (musician and singer from berlin). the tracks they recorded do not remind being mostly improvised. they all breathe a vivid groovieness, are full of musical experiences flavored with vocal lines and snippets. >tricks< on side a presents perfectly the deep sub-bass driven minimal techhouse being popular in 2008. >turteltaube< and >anja< on side b play cheeky with our todays techno behavior, but do not lose musical deepness. they are funky and playful, yet always under control to keep on minimizing

skinnerbox, thats also two gentelmen, one of them immigrated from a far away country and both living in berlin now. in their boxes theres no devil but there are grandpas old synths, funnily and heavily beeping and bumping beats and basses, joy and fun as in godizllas playroom. and then comes mister humantronic, his remixs, finest tech that will wake up the beast even where no beast was ever before. a record to love and to pamper!
