after a year’s hiatus optimo music disco plates returns with the first of several planned releases.
first up is long time friend phil kieran with an ep made specifically with optimo in mind. it has been tried and tested over recent months and more than ticks all our boxes. we feel confident it will tick yours too.
phil says “the ep was recorded in my house and made up of mostly live percussion performed live by thomas tettey annang. originally from ghana, he moved to belfast some years ago. it just so happens his wife is a close friend of my sisters and that was the first introduction. thomas now runs -releasing rhythms” here in belfast teaching drum classes.
we used a wide selection of traditional african drums that all have their own name, each one has a style and a sound. the rhythms used in this record would stem back to south american rhythms but using african drums. this was a sound and rhythm that influenced early post punk records in new york and still has an influence on dance music today.”

BLINDED BY THE SUN (REMIXES 1 - ROMAN FLUGEL / ANDREW WEATHERALL)
12" Vinyl UK01.03.17
roman flügel and andrew weatherall supply two outstanding remixes of phil kieran recent album ‘blinded by the sun’, which david holmes claimed is “one of the best electronic dance inspired records in recent times.” mixmag described phil kieran as “one of those producers that impresses with every release” so it comes as no surprise that two music heavyweights have jumped on board for remix duty. kieran accounts flügel and weatherall to both having a heavy influence on his career. german dj and producer roman flügel is easily one of the most revered names in the dance music spectrum. his take on ‘no life’ is a masterclass in production. flügel has created a track that is powerful whilst also superbly intricate. flügel holds over twenty years of experience, extensively releasing on a number of labels whilst also co-founding ongaku, klang and playhouse recordings. uk born dj and producer maestro andrew weatherall remixes ‘finds love’ and reminds the listener of how beautiful electronic music can be. combining cosmic layers with the ethereal vocal, this is a lesson in what a remix means. weatherall has been experimenting with techno since the 90s, and well regarded as one of the world’s most influential djs. kieran created a ten track narrative in ‘blinded by the sun’, inspired by his experiences in the industry. it was met with high acclaim globally and this remix package further imprints his vision on pioneering imprint hot creations.
making his hot creations debut is belfast s very own phil kieran with make a change and heavyweights nathan barato and matrixxman on remixes. acting as a teaser this release is the precursor to kieran s soon coming album blinded by the sun on jamie jones and lee foss s almighty label in october. make a change sees synths and drum machines being brought together by a simple vocal that acts a mantra, i wanted to send out a positive message onto the dance floor that could empower people. inspired by events and people in the world over history that have made a difference by standing up for what they believe in. phil kieran
now thats a massive piece of vinyl! the news about an upcoming remix package for tech-house-maestro phil kieran should be enough to raise techno lovers attention. however this time the buzz is even bigger as we managed it to get luke slaters cult project planetary aussault systems aboard! yes, you heard right, the project that helped shaping the image of former techno überlabel peacefrog is on remix duty here and the planetary aussalt system does what we expected
as hard-line as the title threatens, as martial as the artwork displays, as genuine as techno can be - with his latest release on snork enterprises, phil kieran has created a tremor and once again proves his uncompromising unique sound, for this time somewhere in between iron relentlessness and poisonous composure. in a somewhat extrapolation of *totally snorked* his second release on snork enterprises *shred beef* sharpens his tune up to the peak of intransigently pulsation, with a whiff of *i think i m a monster*. marching up front with its bass-line, his new tracks pursue a sound that mirrors the mercilessness of true underground techno. pure. harsh. dont give a shit!
accomplished producer, phil kieran, makes his hotflush debut with a two-track ode to hedonistic flight. yes im going there goes the lead tracks refrain. where there is, who knows? but you can enjoy a soundtrack of sun-kissed piano chords and heraldic horns on the way. as kieran > gets away< on the a2, the mood takes a turn for the dark. lost in the early hours, pockets full of miniature plastic bags and no money…thank fuck for the throb of that kick in these lonely but exciting times
from its tentantive beginnings, this monster of a track quickly gains momentum. as the driving bass accelerates, megaphonic vocals kick in to create a future classic by two of technos masters. ‘free yourself’ sees phil kieran and green velvet doing what they do best. phil laces straight bass with sci-fi sounds of hiss, plink and echo landing just on the right sideof weirdness. green velvet delivers lucid and soul searching lyrics in his signature hypnotic drawl
get ready for a new exciting collaborative project on electric deluxe! >workshops< is a new experimental series of releases by phil kieran and jochem paap (aka speedy j). the idea behind this project is to explore the recording techniques used in the middle of the 20th century and dating right back to the mid 1950s. famous inspirational places like bbc radiophonic workshops in england and philips lab in holland have seen some of the most innovative production techniques, experimenting with the first use of stereo, modular synths, found sounds and reel to reel tapes. the end result was always something space age and promisingly futuristic and still to this day fresh sounding, crisp and exciting. phil kieran and jochem paap have decided to use this inspiration to effortlessly accomplish marrying the past, present and future in an innovative mix of old ideas with new.

with a well-earned remix refill, cocoon recordings is taking a bow before the belfast-born dj and producer phil kieran, whose >shh< album from last year, like rarely another album release, was able to proof how fresh, futuristic and complex modern techno can sound.
phil kieran has been in the upper echelons of the electronic music game for more than a decade, but is only now releasing his debut album under his own name. known for rocking clubs and releasing a string of killer twelves, belfast-based phil has hooked up with german powerhouse cocoon in recent times. sven väths label is now about to release shh, a groundbreaking piece of work that will undoubtedly gain phil plaudits across the board. shh seems to not only reference every sound phil has ever loved in music, but is formulated in a completely fresh and futuristic way. listen carefully and you can detect elements of dub reggae, old hardcore like lfo, hip-hop, early 90s electronica such as autechre/black dog and other warp staples, as well as the futuristic techno that phil excels in. for the album phil went back to old sound lab recordings dating back to the 1950s and 60s. utilising some of these sounds in the initial construction, he built up tracks using a combination of old samples sourced from original and weird places and some live new instrumentation as well. there are live drums, some electric / acoustic/ bass guitar and live keyboard playing as well as some choice guest vocalists.
supported by: green velvet, timo maas, erol alkan, funk dvoid, ivan smagghe, pete heller, dj hell, len faki, basti schwarz, laurent garnier, stephan bodzin, ewan pearson, gregor tresher, monika kruse , and many more!
since the year 2000, belfastian dj and producer phil kieran is providing us with a constant flow of outstanding records and remixes – among them for novamute and soma – with his energetic sound from the capital of northern ireland. not least has he gotten awareness with his alloy mental project on fatboy slims label skint. his new maxi for cocoon designs two blueprints of uncompromising techno between tradition and modernity. whereas the post-acid sounding a side can be indeed called >wasps under a toy boat<, displaying ongoing >wasp sounds< which are shifted against each other, the break- and bass-orientated b side >tartan paint< sets new standards regarding the sound abstraction beyond popular expectational attitudes. and thus stays a highly functional dj weapon for intelligent techno bashes.
phil kieran is back again with >missp< on cocoon recordings and continues consistently where he stopped with his contribution to the compilation g: groovy, dark, technoid – a sound that, from time to time, reminds of some fog & strobo parties in the mid-nineties. an electroid bass line and a fascinating drum roll go straight ahead and its still the fine sounds in between that make the music and the rhythm. a track which is perfect for the prime time

>pinhole of light< has already exploded into clubs worldwide courtesy of dj sets from funk d void, james zabiela, speedy j and 2manydjs. stepping up to the remix challange is jesper dahlback. he delivers a tougher sounding version whilst keeping the emotion of the original intact.
the title song >awe< starts off with a bang w/heavy basslines and jet fueled vocal hooks, low stabbing and looping sounds while the mix slowerly climbs in its devastating bassline. this will have you thinking about the good old days of nitzerebb, front 242, ministry & coil all cooked up into one tasty new sound for tomorrow. the short stabbing synths become quite hypnotic over it s 6 minute decent which seems to mutate and granulize over and over. the flip side presents >king< a monster ignition switch set to detonate dancefloors around the globe. a stammering flash of battle-ready tech that chucks all manner of elements into the pot and produces a demented hunk of rave basted goodness… this will have you misty-eyed with nostalgia. funk me! this is accelerated dancefloor mayhem for the scene of tomorrow. my hat goes down to felix da housecat for presenting this fine piece of wax to the world
special triple pack for all you snork lovers out there - including 3 classics from the snork stable
snork060: sender berlin - deep field transmission (alexander kowalski remix)
snork069: phil kieran - shred beef
snork070: youngman & landstrumm - fry up ep
these tracks are all drawn from le carousel, phil kierans forthcoming album recorded with a discerning selection of talented irish musicians. its a thoughtful album with phils perfectionist nature, musical talent, engineering and mixing skills turned towards the art of songwriting.
berk offset played this track live at a party. the clattering sounds got to my ears and i remembered some parties in the past when i was in a dark club…only walls of concrete, pipes, rusty iron and steel. so i wanted to keep this associations caught on a 12 inch. this track brings you the power and tension of industry noises and sounds shaped and bend into a straight beat, just pure machine music. phil kieran s remix is the clean industry hydraulic version with an up-building tension and massive punchy bass drums in a more modern computer controlled robot system instead of a steam pressured, oiled and greased gear wheels using machine like in berks original version. but both tracks will put you under pressure in their own special way!
