montreal’s minimal techno veteran pheek offers up a milestone vinyl release for the onset of this spring season. lumo ep offers four vibrant dance-floor compositions, each delving into its own labyrinthine mindscape, leaving no stones unturned in an ethereal garden of listening. lumo invites us into exotic, sprawling atmospheres- crafted with excessive care and the unmistakable studio-finesse that pheek has become known for. lovers of drums will be assured troves of bass-heavy, broken-beats and skittering, jazz-infused patterns which delicately tease and tantalize as they appear and flicker out. seasoned prowess in sound-design allows pheek to convey eerie, forgotten landscapes with periodic, lushly rising elements to bath the listener in unexpected lightness and thrilling serenity. lumo will surely tantalize even seasoned listeners as it melts heavily saturated layers of depth over unexpected arrangements. the result is a stunning interaction at the crossroads of minimal house and techno, nudging the listener toward sturdy grooves while simultaneously introducing new pathways on the way to ever-increasing depth.

canadian minimal standard-bearer pheek is the fifth artist to sign up for the untold stories protagonist series, and he s packing some of the crispest grooves he s laid down in some time. -lonely wolf- is everything a minimal house track should be, with a crackling, shuffling beat and layers of subtle orchestration building into a soul-stirring groover. -father- however takes a more abstract route into off-kilter percussion and exotic found sounds specifically arranged to tickle the mind. that leaves it to -the logical question to come is yet to be defined- to dominate the b-side in a 16-minute trip that moves through all manner of moods and moments.

while pheek may have been in operation for as long as anyone can remember within minimal house and techno, cleymoore has been most productive more recently thanks to his pluie/noir label. following on from last years seikou single on xquisite, here cleymoore and pheek link up to deliver some densely packed, production rich jams that keep the spirit of mid-00s clicks and cuts alive. the beats themselves may be slender slices that carry the energy of the tracks, but it s all in the infinitesimal details in between that the true magic of this music comes alive.

minim records gathers a quartet of bumpin sleek sounds from around the globe for the anticipated 002 va. “stardub” finds romanian producer mano andrei layering ethereal, muted pads over some raw percussives, tight driving kick and body moving bassline, while montreal gearhead pheek’s “glad i say” mates tech house bounce and sine-wave wubs to a creaky, industrial sonic palette. uk trackslinger tijn pictures the “cosmos” bursting with angular breakbeats and 4/4 subs, as the talented ukranian producer/dj and tvir label boss komponente tweaks percussive tones, punches the kick, and adds a coating of sonic grit on the brain-bending “amigdala”.

with white raven, pheek continues his explorations into electronic spaces both cavernous and microscopic. composed of the flotsam and jetsam of synthesizers stored underground in a secret cave for techno spelunkers, white raven is an exploration into spaced-out sound that is as alien as it is mental. minimalist rhythms of microsonic particulates appear and disappear in silence and echo, synthesizers hum and disintegrate, dissipations of static agglomerate themselves into robotic assemblages, controlled bursts of feedback romp and resonate against sliding musical scales. once again, pheek defies current crazes.

the phrase *feux follets* from which archipel 105 draws its title, comes from the latin ignis fatuus, and translates as will-o’-the-wisp. the etymology reaches back to old folktales in which ill-intentioned spirits would cast an atmospheric glow at night, in order to lead weary travellers astray. today, the term refers to ghost-lights - artificial light reflections caused by decomposing organic emissions. anyway you choose to understand it, this music contains the mysterious and unattainable. feux follets are meant to depict an elusive (and perhaps also illusive) ambition. a tense equilibrium colours the constant, foundational sounds with aleatory movements. the compositions are detail-oriented, and boldly explore their tangential elements.

it’s with a lot of excitement that archipel’s boss himself releases a vinyl extract of his album’s favorite tracks. while the album which consist of 2 cds, we thought some of the works would fit well in the hands of collectors who would push the tunes in their quirky sets. the opening track, titled “big trouble in little cave” is one that could haunt a techno party in berlin where in the breakdown, things just go out of control and while you think you can’t take anymore, the music takes you back to earth. tests have proven to be used with care, reports indicate some people reacted with a lot of noise. “dérape totale” is perhaps a cross of four tet releasing on raster noton. awkward combo indeed but the strange structure on top of weirdly arranged percussion is set to catch your attention and draw you into an inner journey. with the chance of having manchester’s dncn join him for vocals, pheek goes with his first interpretation of what a pheekie-pop tune could be: fun, intriguing and catchy! >follow the flow< is the closing track and is one build tension with surprising exploding percussion clashes on top of melodic waves.

with labelboss pheeks album >en légère suspension< being loved by many for its eloquent detailing and organic, electronic psychedelia, we are happy to bring you a collection of remixes of select tracks from the album. for the remixing purposes, archipel called two favorites to compile a colourful mix between warm afterhours and peak time music. >aye aya ashawa< gets treated by mathias kaden and molded into an exotic, humid cloud of hypnotic, densely layered quasi-tribal percussion with the original vocal presenting itself in a very visual hypnagogic manner. the excellently driving and hypnotic >orage solaire< gets put through the wringer by tim xavier who highlights the hypnotic nature of the original and darkens the tone a little more into a jittering, pulsing aural storm.

the seventh ep from the untold stories, is a collaborative project, beats and keys. the beats coming from nektar agu, and the piano from matias zurita, aka cossmos. both artists from buenos aires, and they obviously found a great harmony for this project, because the result is very nice indeed. a1 is a special work, entitled seiya . it s an enlivening track of distinct attitude, the flow is strong, the percussion powerful, and combined dextrously with the beautiful keys from cossmos. the effect is very inspiring, very mental - deep and evocative, and very enjoyable. this epic work then get s a remix by archipel label boss pheek, who keeps all that made the original magical, and crafts a refined 8 min remix, if you liked the first track then this will be a very awesome further development. the ep is then concluded by a 7 min work by nektar agu and cosmos, this time a more upbeat and trippy affair, again it s beats and keys in a cool harmony, again done with considerable skill, and is a nice end to a fine record.

the untold stories offer up their next double pack collection on their trademark transparent yellow and black vinyl. for chapter v they welcome some new artists into the label with jerome.c, jarz=polors, volta cab, and md wallholz, all featuring for the first time. this combined with some superb works from franco cinelli and untld regulars ztrl, ivan lopez, pheek, and jonas sella: makes for a memorable album of highly identifiable music, with varying vibes from the street knowledge track by volta cab to ztrls one perfect for summertime afterhours, altogether another very enjoyable collection.

klangscheiben records is proud to present its frst vinyl release of a brand new series, a various artists compilation entitled „the fable“. while some tales start with “once upon a time“, this one begins with the candid rhythms and guileless synergy of german duo metaboman and large m’s “taverne master”. canadian minimal masterminds akufen and pheek each provide their own input: the former’s weaving synth-driven jazzy storylines, the latter’s a trip through fragmented instrumentals and a min-tech narrative. klangscheiben label boss demas shows his fangs with a brooding slow burner permeated by skin-crawling microsounds, a flow picked up by montreal producer magnanime’s “psychomagic master”. ark’s parable is awash with echoing vocal snippets and an addictive piano riff, melting into the strange sound of tom ellis, whose “shotgun” is at once stripped back and full of life. tomas jirku wraps up the release with “one monkey”, a glitchy, eccentric minimal piece that is as unpredictable as you’d expect from the vancouver producer. the moral of the story? listen and fnd out.
