originally released in 1996, the 6-track remnants ep was only the second record produced by morgan geist for his own environ label. now beautifully remastered, this heretofore hard-to-find ep is crammed with geists early influences: from intricately-programmed roland orchestras that echo his early techno releases on metamorphic to jazz- and r&b- listening tracks that would later inform the sound of his debut album.

sacred summits returns after a two-year hiatus with an album of interpretations of the music of eric satie by acclaimed composer morgan fisher. active for over 50 years morgans career has moved from 60s number one hit wonders love affair, to 70s rocknroll keyboardist in mott the hoople, before finally on to 80s ambient, improvisation and soundtracks, working with the likes of yoko ono, haroumi hosono and dip in the pool. based in japan since the mid-80s, fishers long-standing admiration for erik satie (1866- 1925) led to these inside satie recordings. satie’s unique work as a precursor to artistic movements such as minimalism, surrealism and repetitive music are acknowledged but for long periods he was not given the accolades his music warranted. a strange, eccentric, surreal man, he was never as acclaimed as the established masters, but influenced not only the likes of debussy but also many of the dada artists. on this album morgan played his music freely after just a brief look at the scores. recorded in just three days, it features piano, melodica, synthesisers, and morgans favoured tape delay system. inside satie is one of the first albums i recorded in japan shortly after moving here in 1985. in three days i improvised on several of my favourite satie themes. mostly i played piano as well as the rich, analog-sounding yamaha gs-1 (precursor of the dx-7), and sometimes used long tape delays to build layers of sound. all the pieces were recorded in single takes no overdubs (no time!).

back to back 70s roots shots from joe morgan, his first and second ever tunes. while many know joe from his wackie s anthem basement session, joe was already producing himself in the mid 70s on his own afro black label in jamaica before coming to nyc. both of these tunes are stone cold classics long hunted by roots collectors, and the rhythms used should be familiar to astute listeners from other brilliant cuts. joe continued to record and produce himself and other artists on his own main imprint fish tea, and other labels label thru the 80s. the two tunes issued on this fish tea 12inch both originally appeared as afro black label 45 s in jamaica, and the b-side also on a pet shop label 45 in nyc

joe morgans stop them is killer late 70s militant roots, self-produced and originally released on his own jomor music house label (under the name billy joe morgan) in nyc. awesome vocal, majestic horns, heavy rhythm, a shining example of the brilliance of late 70s roots reggae and how perfectly suited the style was for the extended mix 12inch single discomix format. we ve added something special for this reissue (now on joe s main imprint fish tea). not only do we have the original 12inch replicated in full, but also an awesome and previously unreleased late 80s digital recut of the tune entitled warrior. unfortunately a dub version for this cut was never mixed, but we are grateful to have uncovered another gem from mr. morgan, one of the crucially under recorded and underrated artists of his time.

one of the very first artists to begin recording in jamaica, derrick morgan is beloved as a ska icon and a pioneer of the ‘skinhead reggae’ style. blessed with a rich, deep tenor, which with he belts out his clever and often humorous lyrics, morgan became known on the kingston music scene through vere johns’ regular talent contests, and enjoyed a lengthy run of hits during the 1960s for producers such as simeon smith, duke reid and clement ‘sir coxsone’ dodd (among others), cultivating a popular vinyl feud with prince buster after being brought into leslie kong’s camp by the young jimmy cliff. morgan moved to england during the late 1960s to capitalise on the skinhead reggae craze, but was back in jamaica from the early 1970s, and since bunny lee was his brother-in-law, the two have always maintained a close working relationship. people decision, voiced at king tubby’s studio for lee and released by third world in 1977, sees morgan in politicised roots reggae mode on songs like ‘let’s build a better jamaica,’ the symbolic racetrack drama ‘racing at ballistic park,’ and the title track, which all boosted the socialist policies of the ruling people’s national party, ‘natty dread forward out of babylon’ updates the ‘tougher than tough’ saga, and there’s a slew of rude tunes when you flip the disc, including ‘my dickie,’ ‘rough grinder’ and ‘ride manny fanny.’

soul music fans all over the world may have never heard the name jesse morgan. of course this has its reason. although he was an original member of one of hawaii s most famous bands in the 1960s (the mopptops), his solo career never materialized. his one and only solo release was a 45rpm single which might have made even the great james brown jump back: (i gotta get back- b/w i pity a fool). it would take another 9 years for him to get into a recording studio again. the album was scheduled for release in 1978 when he was signed to anchor/abc records. the same year, a major record company bought abc records and all newly signed artists were put on the shelf, including jesse. his album remained in the can for almost 40 years. these two tracks were pulled from the aforementioned album. they give you a perfect taste of what you can expect of jesse, the debut long-player by jesse morgan which drops in april this year as a special record store day 2016 release. ten modern soul masterpieces on one album. something you rarely find, unless it s on mo-soul!

derrick morgan ia one of the greats of jamaican music, he is the undisputed king of ska. but his recording career did not stop in 1967 when the sound of ska slowed down into rocksteady. nor did it stop in 1968 when rocksteady evolved into the early sound of reggae. the set you have here was first released in 1974 when reggae was king, the album carried the name “in the mood” - but also had the working title “this is derrick morgan”. a title in the world of reggae carrying the moniker would normally be used to introduce new singer and be his showcase album. in this case in could be used to reintroduce the singer derrick morgan to the new reggae sound. but we feel someone of derrick’s calibre needs no introduction as his voice works on any rhythms put his way. so sit back and enjoy one of the greats of jamaican music showing the world with the help of producer bunny lee that he can roll with the reggae sound.

morgan zarates second release for hyperdub is a bold and unexpected move for him. he has been known in the past as the producer for leftfield soul group spacek and also currently as one half of the shining, signed to xl records, but with >broken heart collector< he has made some highly contagious dubstep pop, featuring rising singer / songwriter / producer stevie neale on vocals. stevie warns of a guy who is the titular >broken heart collector<. her rnb vocals contrast with a fierce storm of drums and vertiginous synths that attack like waves against rocks. it is a brilliant pop song, with a chorus earworm you might find hard to resist. there is also an instrumental included as well. the third track is >crey bey<, an energetic, grimy 8 bar instrumental. it shifts between dive-bombing synths and a spooked, nervous melody over a rich organ track, with martial kicks and snares guaranteed to get you bouncing.
