for the 9th instalment in dba s dubs series ikonika and big strick square off head to head, following the hyperdub artist s genre-defying distractions lp earlier this year. oral suspension is an instrumental which switches rough-shod between a uk halfstep crunch and a hoop dreams era chicago bounce. on the flip big strick brings his characteristic smooth groove to the table for the remix, which, though laidback, is nevertheless bound to energise the dancers. evading the ubiquitous pigeonholes, ikonika has variously been known for her dubstep innovations, her uk funky experiments on hum and buzz and her post-urban sketches for hyperdub. meanwhile though an interest in techno and specifically the sounds of the midwest have underpinned her work.

zarkoff returns to gooiland elektro… this time not as fffc but together with ikonal… a partner in crime when it comes to producing spacey and trippy acid tracks… these three tracks are from one of the infamous synth jams zarkoff is organizing in an empty factory near sisak in croatia… the acid tracks featured on this ep have a throbbing beat with a clear hint to ebm… and the acid lines are both psychedelic and dark… in short dark acid for late night parties!

ikonika is one of the outstanding producers of her generation. her 2008 debut >please< (hyperdub), announced a forward thinking, highly melodic, twisted take on uk underground dance music. after further singles for planet mu and hyperdub, she went on to release one of the best albums of 2010 ‘contact, love, want, have’, receiving glowing reviews from the guardian, bbc, nme, fact, resident advisor, pitchfork among many more. her remix projects have included interpol, caribou, cubic zirconia and dj mujava.

beach mode (keep it simple) is the perfect snapshot of ikonikas new album aerotropolis. it is also her first vocal track, graced with the voice of *one to watch*, jessy lanza. beach mode combines sunny salsa-like chords and claves, inspired by latin freestyle dance music from the 80s, with jessys vocals cutting in over some soaring rough synths. it is a refreshingly straight forward and sensual piece of pop dance. side b starts with a dub mix for all the vocal haters, while the percapella version breaks it down into a syncopated drum track and a slightly dubbed take on the vocals, giving it a tracky and colder toughness reminiscent of early chicago house music. get into beach mode.

in contrast to the recent album, these three tracks have a sad, emotional quality to them and a paired down, minimal production which shares as much in common with techno as it does with dubstep.

another transatlantic soundclash on night slugs, this time centered around the new york-based r&b / acid house band cubic zirconia. on the a-side, elite hyperdub producer ikonika remixes cubic zirconias >hoes come out at night<, letting tiombe lockharts dirty rap vocals ride her charging 145bpm riddim. infused with all of ikonikas signature cosmic synthwork, the hoes remix is also delightfully ghettotech-flavoured and primed for peak-time dancefloors. on the flip things get deeper as night slugs captain bok bok and cubic zirconias nick hook collaborate on an retrofuturistic acid-bassline banger by the name of >reclash<. this time tiombe is a ghostly presence, delivering disorientating incantations over bok and hooks jacking 808 drums and soaring synth psychedelia. night slugs booty from outer space.

nice price deal !!! idiot is already something of a hit with those whove heard it being played out, combining hard soca drums with lush ecstatic melodic synth harmonies and a driving bass with a strange 8-bit melody that stumbles and trips around the rhythm. its completely alien at first, but potent enough to stick in your ears until you might catch yourself humming the refrain when you least expect it. a unique and fantastic combination of compelling contemporary sounds! altered natives, aka north london producer danny native, whose track >rass out< was one of 2009s best, takes over the b-side with a remix that seems to reflect 20 years of british house music back on itself. just using the bleeps from the original tune, he echoes and morphs his own melody over stepping dubby kicks and snares and a dark, driving bassline

>smuck< follows in the tradition of ikonika~rs sweet and sour, curdled sound, with ever changing off-key melodies and metal-like synth guitar lines over sweet chilled chords, the track takes her penchant for melodies that border on the atonal as far as it can go, like a sophisticated take on 8-bar grime.
her remix of eero johannes >we could be skweeeerooos< on the b-side simply switches up the tempo of the original, makes the rhythm nice and bouncy and tightens up the original adding some trademark bent melodies and a see-sawing bassline. the end result is a linear, melodic track that feels like its somewhere between wiley and aphex at their sweetest.

ikonikas second release on hyperdub sees her unleashing a bittersweet, unhinged, dancefloor assault that combines her disjointed beats and a both comic and sinister laughing bassline, with breezy synth chords that owe as much to the current swell of post bump beats than anything else coming out of london right now. and all this named after her cat, millie. on the flip, direct takes it easier, opening with an accordion like synth before a cascade of bleeps desends, and the swollen sub bass rises. totally lush. watch for the sublime switch in the middle of the track, the soundtrack to winding down the roof of your space cruiser, and donning shades as the sun reflects off saturn. deeply psychedelic off beats from the queen of hyperdub.

hyperdub kick off 2008 they way they intend to proceed, with new tracks from a new artist. on her debut release, ikonika comes with her own very unique, warped yet soulful bleep sound. with shape shifting beats that switch styles every few bars its hard to pin these two tracks down... cos if it was easy, it just wouldnt be hyperdub. both tunes are one minute minimal, one minute maximal, driven along by ikonikas special combination of wonky synth and deep swingin sub bass melodies that place them somewhere between an early, blocky grime instrumental and the sweeter side of detroit techno ? except with better bass of course! who needs a vocalist when your synth can sing like this? quite how kode9 manages to keep unveiling new producers of such abundant talent is a conun drum, but one to be cracked some other time when we?re not so busy keeping up with his astonishing labels ceaseless march into the future.

time is running out is regarded by many as one of the most beautiful tracks on ikons second album. sung by kirsty hawkshaw, her folk overtones combine with ikons lush production to give an atmospheric high. cookshop records star in waiting lost idol turns in a beat driven remix of the track to give it a home on the dubbier leftfield floors. some other highlights of the ikon album also make it onto the ep. salvador is the most upbeat - a percussion led latin blast. no reason to stay features the vocals of breaking star dee ellington and new track rosa is a classic ikon instrumental.
