and so, 7 years after its original release equinoxs legendary darkside classic >the phantoms< resurfaces, this time with a distinctly more oldskool feel after some studio treatment from fellow breakbeat protagonist nebula. opening with some stark atmospherics and a subdued voice telling of a dreamed communication, a bubbling bass builds the tension thicker still before its suddenly released by a metallic break that will be familiar to fans of the original tune. what wont be familiar are the outbursts of amen and the filtered flicks of a drum motif from yesteryear which regularly hint at the intensity to come later. the amens get progressively more dominant and the track really takes off when pitching mentasms begin to circle and whoop alongside some searching pads. this is jungle, 2012 style! on the flip side, crystalline pad sweeps and a rolling drumline make for a calm prelude to the barrage of chopped beats and the urgent bassline that follows. different breaks and percussives drop in and out, sometimes tangling to create intense whirlwinds of rhythm. the track changes direction with the introduction of a searching synth combined with some drifting atmospherics which make this another trip for the imagination.

code 718 aka iconic nyc dj danny tenaglia dropped this e2-e4 riffing classic back in the mists of 1992. manuel göttsching s original track would have been a staple of nyc clubs back then and would have featured in the warm up sets of jocks like tenaglia who favoured the longer, deeper sets as well as on the play-lists of institutional night-spots such as the loft and the garage. the track s influence on a whole era of dj s and producers that followed is immeasurable and across 3 sublime mixes tenaglia distills the magic of the original into something totally nyc and club-friendly without losing any of the göttsching magic, even managing to sprinkle a little grace jones in the mix with her fabulous i floated on a cloud vocal sample liberally applied. equinox takes us on a trip that is emotive, uplifting and warm. this is how house music is meant to sound, respectfully steeped in what preceded it yet moving forward in a fresh direction. another example of how on the money strictly rhythm were in their early days, classic after classic rolled out of the labels offices and us, the record buying legions, were / are better off for it! this one s a tasty 2017 reissue and remaster, featuring all 3 mixes, unedited, as per the original release way back when. do not sleep.

shaw cuts enters the site of crime with its first release called ‘have sword, will travel’. the ep includes 4 techno assassins – two tracks by the label founder himself lachriz, who introduces his shaolin moniker ‘farron’ and 2 remixes by the argentinian boxer jonas kopp. ‘equinox’ opens the slaughter with shaking break-beat punches in combination with atmospheric pads surrounding the drum jabs. ti lung would have been pleased. the track ‘apo-g’ comes in sly and chases the enemy with dirty drums and menacing distorted sound spheres that will morph the bad guys into dead guys – throwing star style. the b-side gets taken over all the way by jonas kopp, who brings up two different remixes of ‘equinox’ that can easily cut off the rival’s extremities like a sharp guillotine. and the carnage just begun
