aura go rises, opens, rouses not unlike a soft light growing to illumination, a day slowly revealing itself. synths whisper and ring out – like bells marking an early hour – at the start, followed by a succession of other awakenings: a palpitating beat, vocalizations that repeat like undulations, percussive poundings and ringings. it all leads to full on, acid-infused, dance floor hypnosis, with producer dennis dj mcnany pushing polyrhythmic, almost tribal beats to the very front. with the addition of husky vocals from collaborator jee young sim – imagine siouxsie sioux crossed with planningtorock – the sound becomes something altogether, and altogether unexpectedly, gorgeous.

repress - hot on the heels of aus recent releases from breach, huxley and bwana they ready their next offering from irish duo and long term label affiliates bicep. aptly timed for the festival months, their just ep follows up a series of self-released titles which include collaborations with ebony and midland and is an impassioned bundle of broken beats, shimmering synth lines and rapturous piano chords. the title track kicks things off and suffuses a broken kick and snare combo with a poignant sequence and heart-rending synth strings. a vocal refrain drops in and out throughout a lucent breakdown before () lays a soft, filtered croon over a swelling piano motif. tension is astutely balanced, never quite boiling over and keeping the listener pinned before () drives a tough, gravelly kick under gentle flecks of acid and rich sweeping pads.

a: q & a are quinn luke & alexis georgopoulos.

q: how did quinn and alexis meet?
a: the two were introduced by chris veltri, owner of legendary record shop groove merchant in san francisco. veltri and luke had made a pair of plunderphonic dusted disco 12 inches under the name coppa. georgopoulos was a founder of the group tussle and asked if coppa would do a tussle remix. this led to luke acting as producer on the tussle album telescope mind.

at 21 years old, mathis ruffing has already managed to craft a signature sound, elegant and mature with a focus on melody and texture. rewardingly diverse, the ep touches on several genres and influences, ranging from cosmic to earthy dancefloor cuts, acid, grime, proper electro, idm and ambient. the common thread on this record is the search for balance between heartfelt melodies on one hand and on the other a form of immediacy, raw and almost industrial. ruffing has no trouble finding this balance and adding five terrific tracks to the banlieue catalogue.
