these drums actually constitute what would have originally been volume 4 and 5 before the masters were initially thought to have been lost in a flood that gutted the studio where, up until then, the drum library series were made. fortuitously perhaps, these last two “orphaned” volumes were discovered safe & sound in a storage unit just as vol.15 was wrapping up. we’ve compiled them both here in one special edition volume.

in 1999, the duo of dj t-rock & squashy nice formed in atlanta. squashy nice is an accomplished beats producer, and dj t-rock is a scratch-master responsible for battle records on the likes of bomb hip-hop records, stereo-type, and replicant music trading corp. together they released three party-ready instrumental hip hop albums for new zealand’s why records label. now based from coast-to-coast (squashy nice in new york and dj t-rock in los angeles), the duo has joined the cold busted family for their fourth album, the satisfying seventeen track back to the essence. showcasing the variety and breadth that squashy nices beats and samples and dj t-rocks scratches can provide, the tracks on back to the essence swerve from party rockers to soulful, thoughtful numbers featuring vocals from new zealand vocalist miss glue. among the standouts are the opening hit the breaks, combining harmonica, 60s style fuzz guitar, heavy beats, and some crucial vocal scratches, let them be, with miss glues lovely vocals providing a counterpoint to acoustic guitar cut-ups, and watch the clouds, featuring gentle piano, a loungey string section breakdown, and wistful vocals from squashy nice. back to the essence should be ingested whole, as its plentiful tracks radiate fun, funk, and good vibes. its like a virtual block party dropping down wherever its cuts are playing.

london’s ghost writerz are back with a banger! following a slew of releases on tru thoughts and a recent mixtape -welcome to ghost town- heating up the streets, jimmy screech and sleepy time ghost return with a big splash on nice up! records. based around a familiar reggae riddim, the track tells the tale of jimmy’s foundation in soundsystem culture, starting in the 80s and name-checking legends such as shabba ranks, yellowman, smiley culture along the way. as the riddim flips we shift forward a generation, 90s dancehall and rap dominate, giving props to hip hop royalty such as busta rhymes and 2pac, then finally firing off a huge jungle climax, dripping in enough amen breaks to set the dancefloor alight whilst giving a little history of the musical heritage behind ghost writerz.

parisian techno enfant terrible mondkopf makes a rare excursion away from his fast rising in paradisium imprint to deliver an ep for perc trax, a label that clearly shares mondkopfs love for the experimental, the industrial and the distorted. across these three tracks the french producer applies an overdriven, fuzz-heavy aesthetic to symphonic broken beat techno. think ancient methods or perc at their most uncompromising but then expanded in every direction heavier bass, sharper highs and an orchestral edge that is epic without ever coming across as contrived.
