manchester-based duo shield patterns return on september 2nd with a new album entitled mirror breathing. released on band member richard knox’s own gizeh records label, mirror breathing follows on from the critically acclaimed debut album contour lines in 2014 and 2015’s violet ep. where it’s predecessors took a more stark, electronic and processed approach, mirror breathing is an altogether warmer, more cinematic record.

a-sun amissa is a project formed out of leeds, uk in 2011 by members of glissando and the rustle of the stars. built on the foundations of the unknown, a project that encompasses minimalist drones, modern-classical movements and avant-garde tendencies. richard knox (glissando, the rustle of the stars, of thread & mist) & angela chan (glissando, the rustle of the stars, tomorrow we sail) began forming the initial ideas in the autumn of 2011, moving away from the piano-led ambience of previous outputs.

black rain (i) besteht aus drei erweiterten neuen musikstŸcken von a-sun amissa, die in den ersten monaten des jahres 2020 von richard knox geschrieben und aufgenommen wurden. black rain konzentriert sich auf einen ambienteren und filmischeren ansatz und bietet dem eine weitere textur a-sun amissa palette. wiegende, melancholische atmosphŠren sind hier an der tagesordnung, da sich komplizierte klangschichten ineinander und ineinander winden und einen dŸsteren und sentimentalen ton bilden. knox hat sich nie wiederholt und die ambient-elemente frŸherer releases zu einem konsistenteren ganzen entwickelt. die drei hier gefundenen musikstŸcke arbeiten wunderbar zusammen, da orchesterdrohnen den grundstein fŸr jeden satz legen, wŠhrend stark bearbeitete gitarren-, synthesizer- und klavierstŸcke um die lichtstrahlen drŠngen, die zeitweise in die dunkelheit eindringen. die klanglandschaften tropfen vor wŠrme und hoffnungsvoller zerbrechlichkeit, doch die charakteristische, vom untergang geprŠgte nervšse spannung ist Ÿberall vorhanden und sickert in die unterschwelligen texturen und impressionistischen, verzerrten gerŠuschschwellungen ein. hier wird viel zurŸckhaltung angewendet, und sicherlich gibt der minimalistische ansatz den tracks auf black rain den raum, auf sehr natŸrliche weise zu atmen und sich zu entwickeln.
