proof of the rude health of the australian underground abounds with this new label from phile, who step out with a self-titled debut ep that tells you all you need to know. this is searing, brutalist techno crafted with invention and imagination - the dense crackle of the beats and scorched peals of synth on -found in blood- are a visceral force to behold. -marauder- is mellow by comparison, furnishing a minimal beat with live bass, dramatic string licks and steadily building atmospherics. the analogue dirt of -abhor- is positively evil, and that s before karina utomo s none-scarier vocals come into play. brimming with personality and demanding of your attention, phile made themselves a duo to watch in one fell swoop.

tenor singer johnny clarke had many false starts in his youthful days. hanging around studio one as a schoolboy with jacob miller, clarke was supposed to record material written for him by bob andy, but somehow never made the grade. his 1973 debut recording for lesser-known producer glen stair was not released, and early work for clancy eccles failed to hit, though ‘everyday wondering’ for rupie edwards made an underground impact in britain and new york. subsequent singles for keith hudson and glen brown also did not get very far, but the breakthrough finally came when bunny lee asked him to sing ‘none shall escape the judgement,’ which was written by the singer earl zero, it became a massive hit that launched the ‘flying cymbal’ craze (based on an open-and-closed high-hat cymbal pattern, adapted from the soul train theme), and clarke became one of lee’s most reliable hit-makers, partly because lee stoked a rivalry between him and cornell campbell, whom lee had previously asked to voice ‘none shall escape.’ clarke’s satisfaction lp was recorded at harry j for lee, voiced at king tubby’s studio, and issued by third world in 1979. it is a set largely comprised of cover tunes, such as the strong opening update of the paragons’ ‘riding for a fall,’ the title track adapting their rock steady hit ‘my satisfaction’ in a post-rockers style. better still is the hard-hitting ‘reality’ tune, ‘play fool, get wise,’ which uses a proverb to relate a means of avoiding trouble on the dog-eat-dog mean streets of kingston.

rough to the touch, the jt3s latest will sink into your souls, purifying them by breathing in the bad and exhaling out the good. js songs use blues and r n b templates, executed with sweaty, wide eyed energy - and this time, hes added a couple of colours to his rainbow that are blowing our minds, those of dub reggae and ska, which squeeze next to their northern brethren with excellent tightness. you ll be left breathless after a nonet of new songs, all of which address the modern dilemma of identity and faith. vinyl only release - as befits the classic rock and soul sounds.

(2lp+dl) lucy and rrose, now coming together as the lotus eaters, have established themselves separately as techno artists who are just as comfortable operating in the uncharted area of experimental music. running their own labels (stroboscopic artefacts and eaux, respectively), they have gained a cult following, both influencing and challenging the direction of techno.

the second release on werk is signed by j. manuel. the young producer has been polishing his sound ever since he first started experimenting with electronic music gear as a child. his commitment to following his own instincts rather than conforming to what was being played around him resulted in a very different aesthetic to the one commonly associated with berlin techno. drive fiction ep stands proof of that. all 3 tracks push boundaries in their own style, that being perhaps the strongest link between them. the title track -drive fiction- presents old-school leads over broken beats and electro inspired pads while the a2 -falling in sine circulation- is arguably the most dance floor oriented track, with a pounding 4×4 kick drum and an alarming 3/4 sine wave slaying the high frequencies. closing the ep is b-side -softer-, a melodic track with long, undulating pads that is nonetheless driven by a powerful rave-inspired beat. with its second release, werk comes to confirm the path it seeks to travel through both parties and releases: that of the sounds less rigid. gritty, wild and presenting a wide range of rhythmic patterns, drive fiction ep is a defying record. challenge accepted?

instrumental music is supposed to be asemantic and yet a rich language of rhetorical gestures has grown up around it. none of them may have a specific meaning but they easily lead the listener towards an emotion, a sensation, an embryonic story. does any of this mean that music is abstract? or does it, to the contrary, mean that music tells a story? there is no abstraction without a story. is there a story without an abstraction? the composition on this album, is it a radio play? tropa macaca = andré abel and joana da conceição check out their earlier albums, they’re just as great.

juris boiko (1954-2002) and hardijs ledinš (1955-2004) were the core members of the nsrd, which is best known as latvian avant-garde, postmodern, experimental and underground music group active in 1980s.
their activities were widely multidisciplinary and they can not be considered as purely musicians since none of them had a professional musical education. their creativity was manifested through variety of media – music, performance and action art, visual arts, poetry, samizdat, the introduction video art in latvia etc. nsrd also made a significant contribution to the explanation of the theoretical aspects of art in the interpretation of the postmodernist movement, and developed the independent concept of “approximate art”. at the end of the 80s, nsrd got connected and performed with several artists and musicians living in west germany, including indulis bilz&#275,,,,,ns, micky remann and maximilian lenz aka westbam and others.

hans berg and johanna knutsson return to the ufo station with their fourth release, a powerful trippy trip, through warped time and space. and guess who was waiting for them at the station? well,none other than fellow space traveller dungeon acid, who delivers a remix that just might knock your space pants off. the title track alien power is obviously inspired by the quantum fusion core phase shift warp power engine that drives the ufo station, a steady beat to keep you on the right side of the force, whereas the dungeon acid remix is a musical interpretation of the great warp speed interdimensional flux mishap of the year 2216. the track dubby is so named because it inherently describes the core feeling of the track! alien choirs and synched synths meet long delay lines in this dreamy piece.

silent dust is the project of uk duo dan blishen (originally from manchester) and andy hobbs (hailing from kent), who produced drum & bass together for years under the respective monikers zyon base and hobzee. their self-titled debut,silent dust,brings their signature d&b sound into a different light, drawing from a wide range of influences - ambient, drum & bass, garage, dub, breakbeat and soundtracks. the result is a collection of deep, bass-laden productions that sound like absolutely nothing else, filled with lush arrangements, an array of found sounds (footsteps, vinyl crackle, sellotape stretching), cinematic vocal samples and glitchy, idiosyncratic drum programming. the album travels through a wide range of emotions and sounds - from the sublime intensity of the giant (equipped with floating operatic samples and tight drum programming) and the dark atmospheric grace of marlowe, to the weighted basslines of the club-suited zero nine zero and the sheer beauty of winter song lined with strings and a reggae-tinted vocal. though its driven by experimentation, this is a d&b record at heart: even the ambient tracks were written at 160-170 bpm. their debut album was originally signed to soul:r, but was pulled at the last minute: the duo bravely opted to start their own label, none60, to release their tour de force.silent dust is a downtempo, atmospheric album that will become an instant favourite for open minds, and for those who seek something new. one of the most unique records to come out of d&b this decade.

after two re-releases of conrad schnitzler classics, (zug & ballet statique) now m=minimal releases a completely new work from the pioneer of electronic music. conrad schnitzler is a sound explorer. for many years, he has been on expeditions, journeys through his collection of electronic synthesizers almost every day. sounds he liked has been conserved on tape and stored in his sound library. the result is a huge library of audio files, he calls them >solen<. >borngrŠber & struever< have got the chance to examine that library and started to con-struct new pieces out of the hidden gems. these are not remixes but new compositions. none of the sound combinations were thought or heard before. the 8 tracks form an album independent of any trend and therefore it becomes a real acoustic environment for everyone. the album was produced at studio.wannsee. to give the album more authenticity, the complete audio processing was done using analog equipment. they not only used many classics among the finest synthesizers and outboard equipment, but also custom built tube gear. the icing on the cake are the tubes used from the 60s, which bought christian borngrŠber on a trip through the atacama desert in a small radio repair business in the city of calama. thanks to the desert climate even the packaging of the tubes looked as new

get ready for some heavy bass infusion. those who witnessed the infamous audio injection vs. drumcell collaborative 6 hour set at berghain in may could sense the raw and direct path of the uncompromising heavy bass-lines they walk on, yet they possess a subtle sensitivity making this audio experience a physical and mental journey at the same time. with his first ep on electric deluxe, audio injection captured this dark and raw spirit in a perfect way. his tracks move effortlessly from percussive high hat funk to heavy bass-line assault, call it techno coolness. all tracks are dancefloor focused, but contain a healthy dose of weirdness, giving the them longevity while still being functional, spot-on material for the floors typical for electric deluxe releases. the vinyl version of >operation a< is being accompanied by a none other than speedy j himself. the remix has his signature flow, shifting, rich soundscapes layered over a forward bassline sketch. music for minds in dark places.

thieves like us is a musical vehicle - an elegant starship, pointed straight to the heart of the listener. they align themselves musically with europe, and consider paris their home (although none of them are french). pontus berghe (drums) and bjorn berglund (keyboards) are from sweden. andy grier (vocals) is from the united states. they met at a picnic in berlin. people often ask them to describe their sound, and although they encompass a variety of influences, they ultimately consider themselves to be a pop band. but no matter how you interpret thieves like us if you have a pulse, youll know their songs by heart already.

after several months of hard video- and filmwork, and several awards, french-vietnamese cutie tk.kim aka. pop-3 will finally release some new tracks, on vinyl and online, and by the way, she promised to release more stuff in 2009! so, the new release, chicks and cuts, with 8 tracks online and a 4-track vinyl 12, is definitely dancy, clubby and loud. definitely in the tradition of pop-3s former releases, that never perfectly fitted a precise music category and prove that tk.kim still refuses to be house, tec or minimal. shes all of them or none of them. and what does chicks and cuts sound like, then? boomy squeaking analog sequences combined with delicious samples of her sweet voice will delight the dancefloor, lo-fi audio splinters coming out of old analog drummachines play something like very reduced melodies, and well shaped bassdrums and deep synths will delight your tummies. the very minimal lyrics are in french, as usual. and, goodie: sonja moonear and akiko kiyama contribute with amazing remixes to this fine girls-only oeuvre, rhythmical and minimal but still very harmonious the one by akiko, deep and mysterious the one by sonja. and by the way, the cover is really sweet, people say.

first vinyl pressing of twin infinitives since the original vinyl issue in 1990. after moving to san francisco, royal trux released the highly experimental double album twin infinitives. this album remains an extreme work on the periphery of rock music, worthy of being compared to lou reeds metal machine music and suicides debut album. at only four subdivided tracks, none of which clock in under 15 minutes, the record has plenty of time to weave a mesmerizing web that is sometimes menacing, sometimes startling. for all of its high brow allusions, twin infinitives nearly reeks of vice, a dark, sordid feel pervades the record, and the listener can almost picture the band recording in a filthy apartment in the middle of the night in various states of intoxication and debauchery.

the 21st full length release on greyscale is by none other than the home town hero sraunus. a veteran of the label, we are thrilled to have the fellow lithuanian back once again. the depth of surrealismus is nothing short of amazing. how only 7 tracks feels deeper than any double cd set, we are still trying to uncover and understand the entire scope of this release. sonically, it is a true gem of pushing the limits. idea wise, this album is cohesive and awe-inspiring. holowuka is beautiful and gentle opener. it sets off a serene almost deep sea diving atmosphere with the long delays and low frequency chords vibrating through. the melodic elements open up even more, a vast world as the track evolves. from the low key and moody to the pumping aggressiveness that is hroniglas ii . a true monster with a sick combination of trance and deep techno thrills. jueootas conjures of memories of 1990s ambient techno with the light and airy feeling of nostalgia. a lovely adventure on the high seas. jurgynas continues this theme with a beautiful ride into a sound that is blissful and forever. some of the most soothing dub techno we have heard yet. lapunai is another strong candidate for being our most favorite on the album. featuring what sounds like excerpts of violin s over some amazing layered melodies. a shinning moment and a perfect example of a dub techno track s emotional potential. lastly, ramunanas submerges us in a beatless (but not bassline-less) sphere of magical and shimmering sounds. a true master-class of more ambient dub techno. sraunus is back and if surrealismus is any example of what he has in store, then everyone should bookmark his choice where he shares his latest news. we think this could revival any dub techno release for album of the year. it s that good!

ltd 2020 repress !! tj hertzs first original release since 2014s critically acclaimed flatland lp comes in the form of objekt #4, a continuation of his club-focused white label series and a tribute to the sadly now defunct basement q, a formative and beloved haunt in berlin’s schöneberg district which quietly but profoundly shaped the musical identities of hertz and several of his contemporaries until its final closure in 2012.
the two tracks on objekt #4 pay tribute to two of the many musical facets of basement q in its later years. a-side “needle and thread” aims to condense several hours of a thursday night in the basement into 9 minutes and 26 seconds, embellishing a hypnotic rolling techno backbone with hyper-detailed atmospherics, enchanting melodies and tight, strident breakbeats. b-side “theme from q” is hertz’s reinterpretation of a basement q anthem, owner and founder dj bogdan’s own “love inna basement (morning dub)”, which never saw an official release despite providing the soundtrack to over 20 years of late morning love-ins in the cellar underneath the sattler & söhne glue factory. together, the two tracks offer an incomplete but nonetheless seductive illustration of one of the most idiosyncratic and overlooked clubs in berlin’s recent history.

for the third release on kwench records, cassy collaborates with stockholm’s art alfie. between them they deliver two diverse tracks brought together with a touch of class and cassy’s distinct vocal. for the remix, german dj / producer chris count rounds off the ep by delivering an acid tinged version of ‘solar’.
art alfie enjoyed a successful 2017 as a solo artist. his first project of the year, the ‘reveries of’ lp, released on none other than studio barnhus. this was swiftly followed up by another solo effort on his karlovak imprint he runs alongside mr tophat. both releases garnered plenty of support from across the dj spectrum.

the great metaphorical river has been lending itself to wise sayings for ages, usually as a manifestation of time, or in relation to how we see instances pass. it exists only as current, neither in the past nor the future, the present. rarely though do we look for guidance from the bodies of water that rest beyond a current’s reach: backwaters seen as stagnant and turbid. that they are, yet by nature they also collect, capable of shaping labyrinthine networks of canals and inlets with ecosystems all their own. backwaters let the present settle into the past, they’re a place apart from the flow where moments compile and mature.
kllo, an electronic pop collaboration between melbourne cousins chloe kaul and simon lam, waded in figurative backwater for much of 2016, amidst an extensive world tour. these were exciting times, the duo’s well worn ep furthered the promise of 2014 ep cusp, receiving millions of streams and landing kllo on festival stages as well as artists-to-watch lists. nonetheless, the stretch kept them far from home, isolated and vulnerable, treading through perpetual uncharted territory while yearning for the comforts of the familiar.
as a result, kllo’s full-length debut depicts inner adjustment to outer change. songs were written partially on the road and developed back at lam’s bungalow, a haven that harbors creative spontaneity and catharsis.

on 005 ken turns away from the light and invites you into the dark with adelaide’s furious frank, who dishes up a selection of psychedelic burners and formidable squelch. on this release frank pays tribute to the many mushroom picking spots in the surrounding hills of his hometown, and does them justice with an assortment of broken beats, affected drum flourishes and paranoid synths. over the course of the 5-tracker, frank presents sounds for the frayed final edges of a night out dancing, where shadows start to play tricks on the mind and each remaining track poses more questions than answers. none typify this nervous energy more so than a2 “dangerous dancer”, with it’s smoked out electro punctuated by a wailing 303 intended for dancers that may have gone too far, but are willing to take the next step.

just a few months after its first release, nitsa traxx comes back with a very special 12”. the project started with a file exchange between eduardo de la calle and ferenc. they decided to work each track on their own side using only a few isolated sounds from the other. this way none of the tracks could never be treated as a full original, but proper remixes of tracks that never existed, building an uncanny, almost dreamlike emotion. a side is for ferenc’s “parón largo”, where synthetic strings are omnipresent and time and space unbends, evolving to an anticlimax where an eerie vocal and the longest possible drop are the leading trademark. a never ending and emotional standstill that goes deeper than the mariana trench. eduardo de la calle uses his distinctive signature sound in the b side. “cloaking tech d fly d” is an obsessive yet beautiful track that reminds us of the somewhere in detroit series. this is a mental and heart-warming tribute to the motor city sound that just a producer like eduardo could do. next releases are on the corner already, and we can’t wait to share them with you.

perfect toy proudly welcomes new signing to its family: korpifunk! originating from southern finland, korpifunk is made of a bunch of musician friends who have fun making music. whenever they spend time together to work on new tunes their approach is simple: to create organic music with a contemporary feel, using live instruments mixed with programmed sounds. on their debut ep you are going to discover the outcome of a fruitful collaboration of a handful of creative minds. toni lamberg acts as the producer but he also plays guitar, bass and synthesizer. on vocals and harmonica we have toni koskipuro, on trumpet jarko manninen and on keyboards viljami viippola. tommi veneskari on saxophone completes the line up. none of them is a beginner in the music field as each and everyone has worked in different bands and production teams since the mid 1990s.

over the years, phil mison has become the go-to selector for those looking for ibiza-themed compilations. none of his previous collections, though, have been quite as personal as out of the blue, a compilation inspired by his first spell behind the decks at the café del mar in 1993 – and the remarkable chain of events leading up to it.

naibu was given the choice of remixing anything in the none60 back catalogue and chose to remix silent dust’s collaborations with detroit’s selfsays to astounding effect, keeping the hip hop elements of the original and mixing them with his unique drum work and atmospherics. selfsays vocals jump around naibu’s reworkings superbly to create two essential hip hop/drum & bass crossover tracks.

since its beginnings, fracture has followed the formula of releasing upcoming and interesting newcomers, people they believe in, to get them remixed by more established artists. this time its none other than uk techno legend james ruskin stepping up to the task, for a track carefully crafted by berlin based artist leiras. leiras comes from madrid, and has in the last few years since his move to germany released a handful of eps, mostly on his own ownlife imprint. abyssal is a trippy and atmospheric cut, the kind of deep techno that can transport you into a second state if dropped at the right time. on remix duty, ruskin makes it weirder and grittier, slowly and skillfully building the tension from atmospheric to potential peak time material.

the seven ep is coming from none other than electric indigo, who is pushing things forward in the electronic music scene since the early ninetees. she also hosts the network „female pressure“, which tries to make female artists more visible and therefore holds a data base with information about many of them.

jumpmono records is back with the next instalment of vinyl/digital mayhem! this time we welcome the super talented italian techno brothers, mr. bizz, with their superb single crescendo. mr. bizz have been making some serious noise across the techno scene over the past few years with their releases landing on labels including, cocoon, sci+tec, octopus, suara and many more... so it was inevitable that we would invite them to release on jumpmono. first up on remix duty is techno legend, koen groeneveld, who provides a powerful peak time monster. the second remix comes from none other than alex di stefano, with his amazing, harder techno sound. the third remix is a huge techno slammer and comes from holland s incredibly talented, steve mulder.

first outing for newly minted glasgow-based label work for love. the inaugural strike comes from none other than timothy j fairplay, the synthesizer warlock known for his involvement in the axis, a loose unit comprising of mutual interests revolving around the studio complex timothy shares with andrew weatherall and his own partner in crimes of the future scott fraser.

zimbru is just one of the new additions to our label roster. focused on a more housy approach this outlet is looking for sounds that cross the boundaries between techno and house, collaborations between artist friends and nonetheless eternal dance music.
that being said zimbru debuts with a double tracker by sahau, the brainchild of dan andrei, kozo and paul agripa, entitled montreal ep.
side a is a pure house gem with breaks attitude, suitable for both night and day, indoor or outdoor. a new jersey influence can be clearly heard in those synths, hence probably the name nj breaks.
montreal, on side b, seems to be a different beast. with powerful swing and a catchy theme this track means business.

this is the fourth release on the 6-volume surgeon reissues label, srx. originally released on ideal trax in 1995, dynamic tension ep established themes that went on to become central concepts to much of surgeons later work. it also marked a refinement of his sound that lacked none of the intensity of earlier releases.
