chris corsano is a new york-based drummer who has been active at the intersections of collective improvisation, free jazz, avant-rock, and experimental music since the late 1990’s.

soulful, west coast hip-hop. a sound unique unto itself. a sound that recalls a classic era nostalgia. a sound steeped in the deep roots of gospel, funk and soul. low blow builds on that tradition with his debut album first book of timothy. the inglewood native embraces the sun-drenched, southern california sound and pushes it forward with intoxicating ows and a soulful musicality that the los angeles music scene is so well known for. consisting of 10 tracks, first book of timothy nds low blow reecting on his life, recounting stories of hardship and loss, relationships and social issues over soulful beats with his unique brand of melodic rhymes and cadences. the album includes production from luke ellington and trevin hickman, with additional production from allakoi mic holden peete. the lp also features musicians miguel atwood-ferguson, uncle chucc (1500 or nothin), jose rios (free nationals), ernest tibbs, jamire williams, jonah levine, jimetta rose, and more.

the seventh ep on frits wentinks bobby donny label brings together some known and unknown producers. the original production is by low end activist, someone who has spent the last 15 years in berlin, bristol and brighton, no doubt picking up parts of the musical styles of those cities as he goes. it features london grime mc trim, an original member of roll deep and an artist signed to james blake s 1-800 label. the remixes comes from frits himself as well as cassius select, who has recently released on uttu and herbert s accidental. park end is a naughty tune with garage tinged drums slipping and sliding beneath menacing rhymes from trim. paranoid synth sounds and an oscillating low end speak of late night urban mischief and its the sort of characterful tune to stand out in any set. cassius select reconfigures the tune as a much more dark and experimental number with a heavy bottom end and huge sub bass that totally envelops you. frits then goes for a more mellow and melodic version, with lazy drums and wilting chords as rainy keys fall from above. it glows like street lights at night and closes out an ep with real attitude

glacial dancehall returns a two-headed excursion ofversions, samples + sirens chopped and screwed into oblivion bytime cowandlow jack. tasked with followingjay glass dubs first volume ofglacial dancehall(of march 2016) each artist served up a half hour side of ruff slow jams, bolstered with additional production and totalling 15 full blown edits. paris low jack can be found splitting time between on modern love, l.i.e.s. and the trilogy tapes as well as running his own editions gravats imprint with jean carval. westmoreland, ja, home to time cow - maybe better known as one of the key players in the equiknoxx crew, responsible for some of the island s crucial 21st century riddims. their watershedbird sound power on dds provides a weird manchester linkage that connects him to low jack via the modern love hotbed.

after an a-side debut on m_red ltd’s heady 10’’ series, shadowy outfit overall severity return with their first full outing for key vinyl. much like the slabs of steely sonic wares that have paved the way before it, “knowing the healing” presents three works of on-point dance floor material we’ve come to associate with the underground tastemaker. “explain pain” is the ep’s aggravated opener. a pounding kick and itchy percussion unfurls into a din of claps and noises, spliced with melodious peals and a low-slung sort of groove. “backfiring nerves” is one of those cool peak-time weapons: frantic yet subtle, deeply groovy and plied with much-loved vintage crashes. “parasympathetic” then concludes in the form of a chugging basement bomb awash with bleary acid tones, crystal hats and muted dissonant chimes. all in all, “knowing the healing” marks a powerful entry into the ring from these ones-to-watch newcomers.

off-key limited is a new subsidiary label of off-key industries whose aim is to give exposure to new artists alongside established producers and to bring a wider range of genres with less of a focus on the dancefloor. each release will be strictly limited and will not be repressed. we start by raiding the off-key vaults to unleash a series of releases entitled >the dust off<, featuring material written in the off-key studio over the years by matt o brien and various collaborators and associates. matt kicks off the ep with >a new page turns<, a bangin dubby detroit techhouse cut driven by a low slung rhythm and analog stabs dripping in reverb, overlayed with a melodica riff which calls to mind the smokey refrains of augustus pablo. next up is >untitled< by newcomer mat gates, a beatless slice of electronica whose understated melodies conjure up thoughts of late summer evenings of times gone by. on the flip, o brien and gates combine under the artist name kimble to bring you >epiphany<, led by a shimmering melody underpinned with haunting strings which combine to form an electro track of rare beauty. this diverse ep is completed with mat gates second contribution, >in a hole<, a drum n bass track with a disjointed, skeletal rhythm, sub bass drops and fragile, melancholy melody.

outro tempo ii: electronic and contemporary music from brazil, 1984-1996 is the second installment of music from memorys brazilian series. this volume picks up where the first outro tempo left off, shedding light on a new wave of experimentalism that emerged in brazil in the late 1980s and 1990s. the twenty tracks collected uncover another area of brazilian music that looked to the future for inspiration. this time it drifts beyond the rainforest and into the pulsating heart of brazil’s great cities, where it meets a generation of young artists eager to radically change the face of contemporary brazilian music. in outro tempo ii the avant garde and pop worlds meld in a haze of percussion and electronics. it presents another uncompromising and magnetic reinterpretation of the limits of brazilian music. outro tempo ii is compiled again by john gómez and features original artwork by alice quaresma.

kicking off 2019 two tracks the first time on a 45 from prolific japanese producer dj mitsu the beats from the sendai hip hop group gagle and licenced from the jazzy sport organisation. mukatsuku put out two gagle 45s produced by dj mitsu back in 2008 so this is a welcome return to the label for the producer. a side kicks off with a dreamy jazzual affair featuring kaneko takumi on keys.on the flipside an excellent low slung jazz hip hop instrumental

mr. k turns to the funkier side of disco on the latest 12-inch from most excellent unlimited, working his magic on a couple cuts that still retain the same power to fill dance floors they had back in the day. - love the life you live is one of those rare songs that was big for me when i first started djing, and still jams today,- notes krivit, who gives another stripped-down, bass-heavy edit to the irresistible kool & the gang classic. one for the b-boys as well as the loft heads, mr. k s edit gradually builds on the hard-charging rhythm with a slinky keyboard solo, punchy horn riffs and breaks, breaks, breaks. gary toms empire ruled the summer of 75 with -7-6-5-4-3-2-1 (blow your whistle),- and progressive djs looking for a follow-up soon discovered another mover in the band s repertoire. -drive my car- is a lennon/mccartney cover that bears little resemblance to the original, and indeed most fans would be hard-pressed to identify any similarities at all in danny krivit s reworked version. stripping out the vocals and chorus and leaving just the rumbling low end groove, mr. k s edit motors along for a cool 7 minutes, laced throughout with short change-ups to elevate the energy. both tunes spread over their own sides of a 12-inch to ensure full-frequency clarity and power!
