mr. k turns to the funkier side of disco on the latest 12-inch from most excellent unlimited, working his magic on a couple cuts that still retain the same power to fill dance floors they had back in the day. - love the life you live is one of those rare songs that was big for me when i first started djing, and still jams today,- notes krivit, who gives another stripped-down, bass-heavy edit to the irresistible kool & the gang classic. one for the b-boys as well as the loft heads, mr. k s edit gradually builds on the hard-charging rhythm with a slinky keyboard solo, punchy horn riffs and breaks, breaks, breaks. gary toms empire ruled the summer of 75 with -7-6-5-4-3-2-1 (blow your whistle),- and progressive djs looking for a follow-up soon discovered another mover in the band s repertoire. -drive my car- is a lennon/mccartney cover that bears little resemblance to the original, and indeed most fans would be hard-pressed to identify any similarities at all in danny krivit s reworked version. stripping out the vocals and chorus and leaving just the rumbling low end groove, mr. k s edit motors along for a cool 7 minutes, laced throughout with short change-ups to elevate the energy. both tunes spread over their own sides of a 12-inch to ensure full-frequency clarity and power!

soul jazz records’ new boombox 2 is a new selection of early rap music from the period 1979-83, with barely a household name in sight. featured here are some the earliest hip-hop records that came out of new york city following the enormous commercial success of the first ever rap record, ‘rapper’s delight’ by the sugarhill gang, in september 1979. artists and producers alike tried to jump aboard the new commercial possibilities of hip-hop. by the end of the year there were 30 hip-hop singles, all released by independent new york labels. the following year there were over 100 more, and so on.

following edit maestro onur engins debut release on gamm was never going to be easy. but once again he delivers two excellent and respectful rewires of perennial classics from james mason & kool & the gang. quality!

he superb disco deviance crew continue to impress with their amazing re-edit series !! editors for this release are well known electrofunkateers from up north, bc, who definitely know their disco boogie. having been re-edited themselves on the redux imprint by legendary electrofunk don greg wilson on a track called >hardcore boogie<, they then went on to release the highly praised >konked out< and >missy done a pil< edits on the same imprint. on this, their first release for disco deviance, they continue their habit of not only re-editing, but also mashing and over-dubbing their cuts with their own played sounds to make an amazing blend of discoid bliss thats perfect for both djs and dancefloors. the opening cut >magnificent disco< is a wonderful mix of elements (both sampled and played) taken from their beloved konk, the clash and kool and the gang which are worked into a sublime disco work out. while on the flip its aretha franklins >jump to it< which gets reworked and extended into a hip disco joint that has echoes of atlantic conveyors crossover classic >we are<. enjoy the music

excellent disco electro !! great follow up on the finger food ep. on the a side a smooth grooving disco affair they are known for. working the floor with some great melodic disco that sounds impressive on a big system. on the flip side two amazing tracks... >mirror men< is a totally unexpected electronic disco funk track with some wave influences. very classy and masculine track! >autumn abyss< is a sweet and soulful track we would expect on a kool and the gang album, think summer madness style, with its incredibly warm sounding instruments
