beauty and the beast is the latest in the series of special limited edition david bowie 7- picture discs being released and will be out on 5th january 2018, almost 40 years to the day of its original release on 6th january 1978. beauty and the beast was the second single taken from the album heroes, the second of the berlin trilogy albums recorded with tony visconti and brian eno at the legendary hansa studios in berlin. the track also features robert fripp of king crimson on lead guitar, who claims that his guitar was all recorded in his first take. the a-side of the 7- picture disc features the track with newly remastered audio, mixed by long-time bowie collaborator tony visconti. the aa-side is a previously unreleased live version of blackout, recorded live at deutschlandhalle, berlin on 16th may 1978 during the isolar ii tour.

robert rental was the stage name of robert donnachie (1952?2000), a british pioneer of post-punk, diy, and industrial music. originally from port glasgow, scotland, he moved to the south of england with thomas leer in the late 1970s where he met glenn michael wallis. glenn was recording music with the group heute and leaving to start his solo projects nkvd and konstruktivists. both were heavily involved with throbbing gristle and the industrial records crew. in the summer of 1979, robert invited glenn to his studio in battersea to jam. robert on guitar and glenn on an edp wasp synthesizer. for each session that summer they would play for about 40 minutes, maybe longer, stoned. robert suggested they record it, many times erasing and over recording one session for the next. the music had no titles, as they were never intended to be released. on these recordings, robert enjoyed playing like robert fripp of king crimson, while glenn channeled wolfgang flur of kraftwerk. influenced by krautrock bands like can, neu!, cluster/harmonia, as well as terry riley and brian eno the duo forged a unqiue brand of industrial music. tape loops and synthesizer sounds played backward conjure dark ambient moods. all songs have been remastered for vinyl by george horn at fantasy studios in berkeley. the lp is housed in a jacket that features a drawing by robert rental from glenn?s archives as well as a handwritten note from robert to glenn. each copy includes 2 photo postcards featuring a transcription of robert?s letter and liner notes from glenn wallis.

anlässlich des 40. geburtstages erscheint der klassiker 2017 erneut, und zwar als limitierte 7--picture-disc.
neben einer neu gemasterten singleversion von »heroes« wartet auf der aa-seite der schallplatte außerdem eine bislang unveröffentlichte liveaufnahme des songs aus marc bolans fernsehshow »marc«. die aufnahme entstand am 7. september 1977 und war die erste liveperformance von »heroes«.

l.a. takedown, das sind sechs musiker die sich, natürlich in los angeles lebend, um den multiinstrumentalisten und filmkomponisten aaron m. olson versammelt haben, um dessen vision von rockigen film soundtrack texturen und melodischem pop zu einem album zu vereinen. aufmerksamen kennern der instrumental musikwelt wird olsens solo-album l.a. takedown, das 2015 erschien, noch in erinnerung sein. der sound von l.a. takedown vertraut auf den hörer und dessen ganz eigenes kopfkino. mal ätherisch, mal fieberhaft, mal heftig groovend und dann wieder betäubend wie rauschgift bezieht sich das album schlussendlich doch immer wieder auf die harmonien der gitarrenwelt. inspiration holten sich olsen und seine mitmusiker bei künstlern wie king crimson’s robert fripp, dem japanischen komponisten tori kudo oder dem nigerianischen musiker king sunny adé. der nachfolger von l.a. takedown’s selbstbetitelten album ist das erste album von olsen, für das er eine ganze band mit sich bringt. da wären keyboarder ryan adlaf und jonah olson, gitarrist miles wintner (girlpool) und stephen heath (paul bergman), schlagzeuger mose wintner und bassistin jessica espeleta (weird war, love as laughter).

beranek’s debut album, “sound of danger”, was released on mind expanding records in november 1981. nowhere near as accessible as the previous single, the album fared poorly commercially. withdrawing from the single’s fun, kitsch pop, the album is cool and static, driven by thin rhythm boxes, cold synths, and glacial guitars. taking heavy cues from david bowie, all of the songs are sung in a nasally english accent, a rare occurrence in norway at the time. the lyrics are melancholic, but tinged with paranoia. there are also upbeat tracks that evoke a prog or glam sensibility a la king crimson, alan parsons, or roxy music. all songs have been remastered for vinyl by george horn at fantasy studios in berkeley. housed in the original jacket featuring red, black, and white lines that evoke a visualized richter scale designed by monica moltzau. each copy includes a 2-sided 8x11” insert with lyrics and an autographed press photo of beranek.

the omnibus band was founded by jarda zajpt and petr dikan in 1979 in czechoslovakia. having met at the electronic high school, electronics was their field of expertise. over time, petr dikan constructed several sound devices such as the Šílený fridrich (Šf, crazy frederick) keyboard and the vsd (všude samý dráty/wires everywhere) generator which he operated during the recordings and also at concerts. at that time, heavily influenced by brian eno and robert fripp from the king crimson band, jarda zajpt played the guitars, using all kinds of effects, pre-recorded tapes, and one or more interconnected tape recorders. the first record, “israels”, was produced between 1980 and 1982. in 1985, jarda zajpt swapped a guitar for a keyboard and a new member arrived – pavel zvolenský – who programmed and played the automatic percussions. martin bauer, playing the bass guitar, completed the trio. they have produced a second album, “rhythmus”, in this assembly. remastered from unreleased tape recordings. this is the first release in the framework of the project jupiter 08 – archeology of the slavic electronic sound.
