in keb darges own words: i ve done many a compilation in my day, mostly based around the tunes i played at my long running deep funk nights in madame jo jos. that night is no longer on the go, possibly due to a growing lack of interest on my part, (sorry). in the last few years the lost & found: nights at the club have been my real passion, and indeed little ediths and andy smiths passion too. what a marvelous era this is for good music. we may still have pure stuff like dub step: pulling in large numbers of sheep, but an equal number of youngsters are being attracted to retro, or at least retro sounding music. people tell me it is because the youth are fed up with computerized music, or men with drug problems angrily shouting at them over a dull repetitive beat, but i know lots of teenagers who have bypassed this muck all together. must be the internet that is helping kill off the demand for empty music. you no longer need to go to a retro club night, or indeed search out rare records to be exposed to good music, the internet is full of the stuff. my fifteen year old daughter is a marc bolan fan who while researching the poor fellows influences discovered chuck berry, sun records, etc, etc. i dont really know or understand why so many are at last getting into the good stuff, but they are, and it is wonderful for the likes of me.

after putting out kito jempere s stunning sea monster album earlier in the year, hell yeah now serve up a bunch of remixes from it that have been secret weapons for the last few months. behind them are black spuma, lipelis and bell towers and they all serve up real heaters. first up with possibly their best ever remix are black spuma—a collaboration between phillip lauer (tuff city kids, arto mwambe) and fabrizio mammarella (telespazio)—who flip ampa into a bootylicious house cut with fat bass stabs and sci-fi synths. it s retro in flavour and riddled with melodies that are brightly coloured and emotive, and when the vocal is layered in it helps carry you away on a wave of bliss. for djs who prefer to keep things raw, a dub version without the vocals is also included and bangs that bit harder.

vocalist and mult- instrumentalist family thebroomfield s might be new to you but deepfunk heads know the deal. the six broomfield siblings (vocalist, diane and her 5 brothers) released some of the best rare groove 12s and 45s in the 1980s (although this 45 was recorded in 1979) as well as recording with betty wright, kc and the sunshine band, timmy thomas, little beaver, julio iglesias, michael sterling and many, many more. championed by keb darge and others on the deepfunk scene in the early 2000s, this record has remained agonisingly elusive, despite being very popular as both sides are brilliant. so, with the help of symphonical records we got in touch with aaron and made this happen, look out for aaron s 45 dropping soon as well.

splendor & squalour number 3 sees brame & hamo return to their rising imprint. since the boys ep lamajs secrets on dirt crew we have seen them do a string of remixes for labels such as kolor ltd, heist & their very successful remix for harry wolfman and loz goddards uncle buck on dirt crew. all these releases have kept a steady momentum going for the sligo boys in the house scene. for this ep we have a full 3 tracker consisting of all original cuts. the ep kicks off with kebab dreams which takes us on a trip to the moon with greasy drums and saucy groove. up next is the mpc workout cert city paying homage to their hometown of sligo. closing the ep we have retch wretchedness which takes a darker turn showing us the spookier side of brame & hamo while still keeping the jazzy touch. a peak time track for sure.

a few years ago the world discovered a unique sound coming from the distant ethiopian capital addis abeba. the emotional blow was only matched by the brightness of this original and magnificent discovery. the ethiopiques series directed by francis falcetto and edited by buda musique provides a comprehensive landscape of this subtle musical universe where local and western cultures do magnify each other. this new ethiopian urban modern music release follows the first soul & groove installment and keeps revealing some essential parts of the modern ethiopian puzzle. an unequalled soul funk signature until today.

urban ethiopian music stands out within the african continent thanks to its creativity and originality. whatever the shade - pop, blues, jazz or soul - it comes from a fusion of local musical traditions mixed with an echo of western music. it bewitched ethiopia during the swinging addis decade before recently winning the favours of a well-informed audience all over the world. this first vinyl volume of *ethiopian urban modern music* presents a selection of the more funkier ethiopian tracks, drawn from the essential ethiopiques cd series directed by francis falceto and published by buda music.

in about 2003 i did some work for deepfunk and northern soul legend keb darge and as was the way back then i received payment in vinyl. included in the pile was this little detroit number which i instantly fell in love with. in 1980 david mcmurray and adell shavers and david mcmurray (who went on to be a member of 80s hit band was not was) wrote and produced this amazing detroit modern / boogie 45 which for some reason suffered the same fate of many of aotn releases and disappeared from history. but thanks to the generation of collectors before me this gem sat safely in northern collection such as kebs for years waiting for its day in the sun. it only got limited play but recently the record has had a resurgence in popularity and value which it deserves. after a tip off from jason stirland (soulstax records) i found david mcmurray and it was wonderful to find he was keen to help me bring this wonderful 45 back into the limelight. so here we are…
