for the first half of the twentieth century, ellis island stood as the gateway to america. for some twelve million people, it was their first encounter with the land they hoped to call home.
directed by acclaimed artist jr, ellis tells the story of one such migrant. starring robert de niro, the film winds its way through the crumbling hallways of the abandoned ellis island hospital complex, now home to jr’s unframed art installation. it’s a place that reverberates with the hopes and fears of those who passed through it, the echoes especially resonant today.
entwined with the narrative is a score composed by woodkid, performed and co-written by nils frahm. the delicate piano motifs of winter morning i culminate in a crescendo of strings, while the harmonium swells on the b-side are the foundation for de niro’s narration: an encomium for those who shaped modern america. there’s perhaps never been a more fitting time for this story, with all the proceeds going to the sea watch initiative, a non-profit charity dedicated to the protection and rescue of civilian refugees.

remixes from artoniks and von d plus bonus track. limited edition back cover reads: sai sai is a nickname given to me by von d. sai sai which is french slang derived from my home country senegal, is similar to the meaning of joker. after finishing a tune one day, i felt the name sai sai was a good fit for it. considering being my debut 12inch release, i feel it is a homage to my swag and home country. my debut ep was named tee hee and i find it fitting my debut 12 being named sai sai. i believe sound is a gateway for energy to transmutate. if sai sai is the ship, ouf is the weapon.

cazumas yume is a delicately balanced trip, from a broke, raw groove towards the light. striving upwards all the way, higher through beautifully orchestrated pads, strings and chants. if you flip the record, you will find envie by mr raoul k. if you know raouls sound, you would probably find this one to be on the clubbier tip. bulding from a groove of raouls patented percussive arrangement comes an electronic sandstorm, from tiny stabs through a full on and freaked out break where the mighty beat is totally lost. and then back at it! this is really one of those tracks that you cant help yourself from playing whenever control is lost on the dancefloor, a gateway to the crowds inner animal.
