boogie café enlist the expertise of goshawk & erik rico to provide the goodness for the next instalment in their boogie café black series. the home e.p. houses four versions of the title track with side a serving up a piano vibe mix, alongside a dub mix for good measure. the vibe mix layers a bassy, bumping piano line & erik s rnb flavoured vocals behind a shuffling beat before a soulful flute line takes centre stage. on a slightly different tip the dub mix drops the flute in favour of echoed out stabs for a sparser and tougher aesthetic, readymade for the dancefloor. flip it over and the percussion vibe mix adds in some choice congas and bongos, combined with sustained organ-style synths and jazzy piano chords, creating a more summertime soul style to the track. the fourth and final dub mix sees goshawk use erik s vocals in short but sweet snippets, adding extra atmosphere to the track but allowing the piano and percussion to lead the way.

the mythical liquid pegasus returns - this time on clandestine boogie, firmly setting out his stall as one of the best around when it comes to modern synth boogie. ‘makin it hot opens up proceedings, synth stabs and squelchy basslines a plenty, married with layers of intricate melodies and a vocoder transported straight from the 80 s. matt hughes takes on remix duties converting that squelchy bass synth into a more straight up funk bass guitar, adding shuffling high hats and weaving in a little jazz flute for added effect. on the flip side it s prime low rider cruising courtesy of sparkle combining a full-bodied bass, cosmic pads and woozy synth flurries to create a soundtrack perfect for late night coasting. to close out the e.p. dave allison adds his own sparkle to the track, upping the tempo, adding a range of hazy arps and sweeping synthesis alongside a perfectly executed bass breakdown, taking sparkle from midnight cruiser to boogie bomb.

george levings of commix (metalheadz) and endian (secretsundaze) joins cynic with a mesmerising 9 minute long live mix of a few simple elements. felix joins george on the flip with a jam reminiscent of old boogie in the vein of maze, but with a creeping sinister undertone.

solar shield kicked off the austin boogie crew records discography with a bang in 2014 with his -reesis- 45 -- so much so that the labelhad to press it 3 times to meet demand. now , austin boogie crew present his much anticipated selftitled lp with 9 tracks of laid back modern funk! . austin, tx, musician chris mcdowell is a wonder on the keys. under his solar shield moniker texas producer chris mcdowell creates exuberant compositions that elegantly walk a tightrope between modern funk and electronic beat music. this quality nine track release features songs created between 2011 and 2013, settling into the modern funk cannon of 2018 with ease.

arkansas native, lee moore moved to memphis in 1975 with only one goal in mind: to make it big in the music industry and to release music that would be played in new york, l.a and everywhere in between. as a singer and songwriter lee moore spent the 1980s collaborating in memphis with the best of the best session musicians and vocalists from labels like volt and stax records to record and release futuristic boogie, soul, and funk. in his quest for a unique sound, he constantly reinvented himself, creating projects with new aliases and concepts, scraping together studio time, and hustling. even today, moores music sounds ahead of its time.

this customarily smooth set from 1981 is perhaps most famous for featuring three unforgettable tracks made with marcos valle. rio’s pop-soul wunderkind was exploring soul textures at the same time as leon was absorbing the rich flavour of brazilian harmonics. together, they crafted rhythmically sophisticated and melodically adventurous soul.

amongst hip-hop fans, boogie down productions first two albums criminal minded (1987) and by all means necessary (1988) both loom very large. and for good reason: they both captured one of the late 1980s most important and influential crews at their highest powers of lyricism and musical invention. that being said, too many people sleep on bdps third lp, ghetto music. released in 1989, when the hip-hop world was truly beginning to explode and reach new heights of sales and exposure around the world, the album is arguably as powerful as the groups first two. as on by all means necessary, in the wake of the tragic death of original founder, producer and dj scott larock, krs-one pushed along mightily on the production side, with help from his extended crew. musically the sound created on albums 2 & 3 was funky, catchy, and continually innovative, giving him the perfect backdrop to build his edutainment syllabus. lyrically there was never a question about krsã power, and on ghetto music he continues to impress, teach and ask important questions. clear cases in point are two of the albumãs singles, you must learn and why is that? but he gets even deeper on lesser-jocked tracks like the anti-police thought-piece who protects us from you (still sadly relevant in 2017), ghetto music and world peace. still as strong and entertaining today as it was almost three decades ago, this new reissue is a perfect way for younger fans to embrace one of the most underrated hip-hop platters of the era.

there is a long-standing love affair between dj harvey and pikes, ibiza. as well as coming back for his third consecutive ‘mercury rising’ residency, the legendary ‘djs’ dj has been appointed ‘cultural attaché’ for pikes, meaning his magic touch and feel-good presence will create even more special moments at pikes this summer, including the launch of new label, pikes records.

nostalgic, soulful and, of course, boogie-woogie. thats how belgian dj producer boogie belgique (aka oswald cromheecke) describes the enticing combination of styles and sources from different decades that make up his music. taking vintage inspirations, most notably from swing and jazz eras, and merging them with contemporary beats and textures is the young producers forte. this is pleasingly evident on volta, the latest boogie belgique album for the cold busted label. jungle law gives a glimpse into boogie belgiques sonic palette. tough hip hop beats and funky live guitar follow an intro of jungle ambience as a trumpet presents the melody. soon some swingy big band jazz enters the song in an almost ghostly manner, while the insistent beat keeps the dance floor moving. album opener go slow shows a different side to the coin giving the listener an uptempo broken beat rhythm, some bouncy bass guitar, snippets of string loops, and a lovely, forlorn vocal line that echoes the past. its a beautiful concoction, and boogie belgique delivers on many aspects of this style throughout his eleven track album. volta is a satisfying trip in an aural time machine.

having unleashed the beast that is his debut lp columbusing, thatmanmonkz grants a couple more heavyweight producers permission to get busy with the sonic manglers for remixes of turn it out and boogie down. first up, one of the vocalist contributors to the lp dave aju (known for his releases on circus company) takes on his own track turn it out, transforming the original from a backyard bbq summer jam into some kind of mutant electro p-funk meets broken- beat fusion. a filtered bass line and bare bones 808 kicks are what this track is all about forming the perfect rhythmic union with the vocal.

it’s now pretty obvious that disco influence has not only been powerful in western clubs. it has also influenced musicians all around the world, and west-indies islands are no exception to the rule. indeed, at that time in the caribbean territories, local musicians and producers seized the sound of their us counterparts, and make it their own, melting-up disco, funk, and boogie (even early rap) elements with some more traditional or local styles. apart from some obvious titles which made it to the charts, very few was known on these productions until recently. from an initial pre-selection of 40 tracks, favorite recordings and waxist teamed up to narrow down the actual tracklist. with no pretention to be exhaustive, this selection represents a tiny sample of a broader ocean of quality caribbean disco/boogie tunes. favorite recordings & waxist are very happy and proud to bring back lights on some of these rare tunes.

marcel vogel has decided to celebrate the first five years of his edit-heavy lumberjacks in hell imprint in the only way he knows how: by putting together a sumptuous double pack stuffed with fresh new material. in keeping with the way the label has developed in recent times, the eight tracks blend the boundaries between original productions, illicit remixes and straight re edits. there s a celebratory, life affirming feel throughout, from the rubbery bass, d-train synths and rolling house grooves of giovanni damicos the break down, to the bluesy deep house brilliance of borrowed identitys queens bridge. highlights are plentiful elsewhere, too, from the hustlin electrofunk meets disco of vogel s own come on, to the killer synth solos and fuzzy bits of tim jules thrilling slap beat.

after a fantastic year in 2013 broadcite music fam spark the new year with some fresh sounds to open up the new season in 2014. we are happy to present the next part of the bbk journey release series. next stop is south africa. a connection established from their base in lausanne switzerland the bbk guys ruben estevez and perler have now completed 2 tours of south africa, touching base with some great artists along their route including fantastic producer scott ross and sensational vocalist ckenz voca the layders. freakin was originally written and produced by scott ross and has had a 2013 bbk makeover, taking the track to another level with some choppy beats and gorgeous instrumentation, also on the buttons for this project is alex attias freedom sounds connecting with ripperton to provide a feakin sexy, groovy dance floor killer remix. both great versions bringing their more urban underground edge to the music whilst demonstrating the ability to fuse with the beautifully fragile vocal melodies. enjoy the new single from the bruk boogie kru.

fina records marks its fifteenth release with borrowed indentitys *bang bang boogie*, a four-track single of rugged house and disco grooves. romanian born now germany based borrowed identity has been releasing gradually creeping out his electronic compositions since late 2011, releasing through reputable imprints such as supplement facts, pets recordings and quintessentials to name a few. picking up support along the way from leading names such as mike huckaby, move d, brawther and delano smith.

chicagos own drops this ep with 4 sample-based house groovers. the title cut is a melodic and jazzy groover, by the way u dance is an uptempo peak time vocal party starter, on the flip i can count on you is a slow soul cut with a classic vocal sample & micolynn (with love) wraps it up.

kaspar resurfaces following issues on clone club series and 4lux with the bastard boogie joints ep for the hands off label. a limited vinyl pressing, this four track ep demonstrates once again kaspars production versatility whilst collectively showing his talent for analogue produced house music deep with grit and funk.

for those who know the story of the bridge wars, there is some irony found in the fact that scott la rock, representing the south bronx, was born in queens, though he did relocate to the south bronx at a very young age. after graduating high school la rock spent four years in vermont at castleton college where he earned varsity letters in basketball, but more importantly for the world of hip hop he became more and more enamored with music. on graduation he returned to new york and began working as a dj and as a social worker at the franklin armory mens shelter in the bronx. it was at the shelter that scott met kris parker and the duo formed boogie down productions. the rest, as they say, is history. roughly a year after the tragic shooting death of boogie down productions founder, dj and producer scott la rock b boy records and krs-one issued this special remix album, a man and his music (remixes from around the world). billed as a limited edition collectors classic the project was released in a limited run – briefly available in the 90s – and now after years of being unavailable reappears as a tribute to one of the genres early pioneers.

for the first solo ep on horror boogie, fedka the irritant steps up, after his outstanding track on horror boogie 01. fedka the irritant is probably best known as the trombonist in the excellent band pest (ninja tune), alongside ben pest (panic bridge, victim, bonus round). he is also a seriously original and versatile producer in his own right. he has released on panic bridge, alongside the other pest members and his trombone techno live sets are something to behold. here, he drops four varied tracks, starting with the behemoth >words for friends<. a heavy slice of wonky techno, with a big kick and rasping synth. next up is one uncertain eyebrow. a building, funky, fuzzy acid-laced track that drops harder and harder as it goes on. on side b, calypso-flavoured, jazzed up >stick it< progresses on to a become a warbling bass effort with a smooth hip-hop vocal. last but not least, is >you only die once<, another funk-laden monster, with a killer slap bass line.

finnish dj crew rollomatik break out on the boogie boutique imprint with a two track release that aims to represent the arctic circle fully in the nu funk/breakbeat scene. formed of hesh & eaves, rollomatik aim to rock the party and that much is evident on this cheeky 12 inch with >we love to party< deftly blending will smith with chic amidst a melange of other recognisable samples. a similar approach runs through flipside jam >the greatest< as rollomatik lay down the vocal from an oft used q-tip solo joint over a heavily filtered take on sister sledges most ubiquitous track.
