invisible, inc now brings the aptly named spacerocks into the fold with the release of a 6- track ep that comes storming in from the outer reaches of a galaxy light years away (or just decades past?) into the earpiece of your unwashed spacesuit. it s hard to pinpoint what genre this actually fits into but if you imagine vapourspace s gravitational arch of 10 as interpreted by vangelis with drum programming by nitzer ebb you d be getting reasonably close. other influences may well include cluster, conrad schnitzler, chris & cosey to name a few, while comparisons can be made to contemporaries like solyst, musiccargo, barnt and secret circuit. spacerocks is a solo offshoot project from higamos hogamos main man steve webster (also fort lauderdale, the black neon, memphis industries, dc recordings). the project sees steve ditch his band and strip things down to his modular, vintage and custom-built synthesizer set up alongside equally rare and vintage analogue drum machines, sequencers and fx units.

james holden may not be a household name, but to fans of adventurous, progressive electronic sounds, the british techno sorcerer and psychedelic shaman is renowned as a genius. so revered are his talents that he has been tapped to remix some of pop music most eminent stars, including madonna, depeche mode, & britney spears, though as this mix demonstrates, his tastes tend more to the cerebral than those associations suggest. head of the zeitgeist-defining label border community which boasts fellow forward thinkers nathan fake & extrawelt on its roster, holden can count himself amongst that very modern breed of dj with a special knack for layering the most surprising of records with an unparalleled musical ear. his status as a free-spirit unconstrained by genre or scene is now championed by independent stalwart !k7, who have called up holden to deliver the next installment in their definitive mix series dj-kicks. holdens masterfully eclectic mix includes the first solo holden single in four years >triangle folds<, and his exclusive previously unreleased remix of mogwais >the sun smells too loud<.

nys underground celebrity, electronic obscurity and rare disco specialist william burnett (aka grackle, aka speculator) delivers an ep that truly defies any categorization and therefore will have a harder time to find its way into the stores usually packed with easily digestible pre-masticated dancefloor stew that comes with filing recommandations. the music on this record evokes images of mad peyote sessions held amidst dry and sandy landscapes. the original desert acid sounds like a jam machines and instruments would do when left on their own, unsupervised by humans. a wobbly and acidey synthline goes on a psychedelic journey with fuzzy guitar riffs, backed by a stompy almost tribal discobeat. düsseldorfs currently most interesting band musiccargo rework the piece into a cinematic krautdisco gem that floats on a loopy vibraphone drone, sprinkled with german and english lyrics. sombrero galaxy (aka cbs/intergalactic fm regular dj tako reyenga and his mysterious uk buddy jonny nash) take the track into cosmic realms (rare occasion where the term really fits) and their version could easily be interpreted as a vangelis tribute. the last track on the ep we are it is a slow 808 jam with druggy and spaced out fuzzy vocals, paired with equally druggy and fuzzy guitars. if you are a filmmaker and you need a song for a weird desert scene youd be an idiot not to consider this one the perfect choice.
