for the ninth release on hotflush two, a new producer based in london steps to the fore: joy orbison, with two tracks resonating somewhere between dubstep, funky, and future soul. >hyph mngo< is the years most talked-about track in the blogosphere: championed by martin >blackdown< clark and maligned by simon reynolds, it has already become a smash in clubs across the world. on the flip, >wet look< maintains the vibe, and has been supported by gilles peterson on his bbc radio 1 show.

transatlantyk return with a double header informed by the dark continent label regular universo (architect of their best ep no less) cooks up a splendid slice of culturally appropriated, campfire heat. its graceland era paul simon fed through some expertly assembled 21st century software. on the flip ryan r (reynolds maybe?) offers up umqondo. as western polands answer to awesome tapes from africa, we d say he knows from whence he takes. its a groove so thick even dr livingstone would have trouble hacking through it, an immersive ride though to be sure, and one which will make infinitely more sense at 4am sunday morning than it does at midday on a tuesday.

fifty first recordings was created in 1994 out of a small but very productive studio in london called state 51 using the down time and the very talented engineers who had been brought together for state 51 s existing clients. state 51 was the go to studio for the likes of x-press 2, sharp, amalgamation of soundz. the engineers we worked with included mark woolford, james brown, james reynolds & mark yardley. fifty first recordings soon found a name for itself and was very quickly at the forefront of the new generation of uk garage music. we produced and released music in the 90s, for over 7 years, with the likes of tuff jam etc. and later went to develop other imprints such as konnect / test press / unda vybe / spread love / tick etc., some in partnership with producers and managed artists.
