format second 2017 release is another prime example of the label’s coveted sound.
stepping up for its landmark tenth release is label honcho juan sanchez, who drops four slices of heavy techno funk. over the course of nine releases, format records have established itself as a very credible source for quality techno. its tenth release again perfectly captures that frisky format sound.
first up is serpent, a mid-tempo and bass-laden belter that’s followed by the darker, minimal-tinged qualia. a different place merges detroit-esque elements with tones of european techno, after which things close with no-beatsall-fx stubborn synth.
the tenth format release is a perfect snapshot of the label’s signature sound, while paving the way for many more good things to come.
amsterdam’s coveted format returns with a fresh slice of techno funk by argentinean producer flug. format’s latest offering sees flug throwing down his signature techno sound across three tracks, all of which are centered around stripped grooves and menacing fx. first up is obscure cells, which combines an infectious synth arp to an ever evolving groove with the outcome being a very hypnotic track. x28 turns things up a notch with a powerful offbeat groove and mental synth squeaks, while the highly energetic trip02 marks a venture into detroit techno territory. a highly diverse ep of a grade quality, this one... format’s ninth release has become another dancefloor damaging piece of work.
following 2014’s ‘xure’ ep, dutch producer doka returns to format with a fresh four-track release including a remix by fellow techno luminaries twr72.carved out of no-nonsense techno grooves, the ep is another prima example of format’s trademark: bold, stripped-down techno designed for peak-time clubbing moments. the title track blends in classic detroit synths to powerful tresor-style grooves, after which twr72 give it a playfully experimental makeover. ‘lommer’ throws in a pitch-black cut that’s heavy on the bass while cleverly mixing in progressive house elements, while ‘dam’ closes things by adding a lovely hypnotic twist to this release’s content. there’s no denying: this eighth format release has all the ingredients to ignite some serious floor carnage…
coming up next on format is a new ep from the label s head honcho juan sanchez including remixes by jeroen search and andre kronert. the diffy ep marks juan s first format ep released under his own name, and it s definitely one that will turn heads on the floor. the original version of diffy and mirage reflect juan s trademarked minimal but hard-as-nails techno sound: staccato kicks, nervously rattling percussions and looped synth pulses make up the fundaments of both tracks, locking in all ingredients for proper techno clubbing.up first on the remix tip is renowned techno veteran jeroen search, whose remix of diffy is a chunky piece of stripped floor funk with subtle hints of detroit techno. following up is a rerub by andre kronert, who drops a beefy slab of mid-tempo techno that s particularly heavy on the dub side of things. 007 does have a license to kill for a reason, you know...
