2022 repress , theo parrish must have been in love when he recorded the a-side track >solitary flight<: a straighter and more flexed beat as usual with beautiful, dreamy jazz piano improvisation on top and a romantic, soundtrack-like string motifs underneath make up for a truly uplifting piece of soul music. the flip is on the rougher tip again with raw, clashing hi-hats and claps with a menacing, claustrophoic sound tapestry out of piano and synth chords in the back. sheer excellence from the man again!

a collection of through and through breaks, things kick off with the roll mix of the title track life signs, in what is an instant head turner as breaks grooves kick in dominated by rattling snares and deep pulsing bass. you must not be me follows suit, if not on a more melodic tip as the breakdowns are carried by echoing melodic patterns and billowing synth pads. on the flip, the tone is lowered as the lights go down for the bleep mix version of life signs, this time around a more eerie approach with clashing melodies and harder hitting drums. recollection acts as the perfect come down for what is an intense listen as ambience takes a hold for the final four minutes.

crafted in the style of old school dancehall clashing, “veteran” is a mixture of classic heavyweight dancehall lyrics and a new school flow. the tune is set to be a timeless banger aiming to keep the dancehall massive rocking and swinging day and night. inspired by the riddim and sounds of blind prophet, clinton sly is ready to run the sound system! slowing down the tempo to 120bpm, blind prophet delivers a heavy dose of dubwise for the b-side. “hugh dub” starts off with a mutated vocal and quickly drops into a tuff steppers riddim. a distorted bassline and thumping kick drive the track. accompanied by plucked guitars, organ skanks and dub fx it’s a sound system stomper for sure!

long and sleepless nights were the inspiration for slaapgebrek wich means sleep deprivation in dutch. the results of these sessions are two moody & hallucinogenic tracks, wich represent a state of mind only to be experienced after many restless nights. the original mix with its freaked out shuffled drumpatterns, rave stabs and maximal modulated bassline is peaktime dancefloor fudder for any crazed techno night. frustrated bleeps and fx give it a nervous twilight zone like feel, climaxing and clashing throughout the track. the flipside takes things on a lighter, more emotion ridden tip. the rhythm is stripped down of all nastiness and the bassline friendlier and melodic. halfway through the break the violins kick in, resembling the break of dawn after another night of turning and twisting without getting any much deserved rest. perfect afterhour material.
