there are many ways for a band or an artist to compile an album: some make it in a week and some let the process go on longer. the latter approach does often mean that that the record will not be better than had it been recorded and mixed within a short amount of time, rather the contrary. however, there are those albums that just could not be made within in a week or a month, those compilation of songs that needed the time to melt together to form an album. fontäns third album titled fontän, released on hoga nord rekords is that kind of an album. put the opening track mangsebung on, then stay with the record until the closer shadows rings out and you will go clear, sharp, and mildly messed up by the listening experience because this is an extremely well directed trip in mind-altering music! this album needed time to reach such heights.

valencias alex font welcomes romanias sepp to acme for the first instalment of mis hermanos rumanos for an intricate split vinyl release limited to 250 copies. acme boss alex font has been producing nuanced house music for over a decade, cultivating a signature style that blends funk, jazz, latin, and techno whilst fine-tuning his skills as a club dj throughout europe for years. meanwhile, uvar and catren founder sepp, who s one of the most influential producers of the new romania minimal-techno scene, has kept equally busy creating and curating quality minimal, including appearances on apotek studio and ada kaleh romania, not to mention an album on uvar. first up, sepps cantecul fusului combines rolling grooves with hypnotic atmospherics before alex font s murph injects a visceral low-end bounce alongside slithering percussion. next, font keeps the reigns with mambo 3, a heady dance-floor number riddled with crunchy drums and a dusty aesthetic before listen to me closes the ep with the eerie phrase just listen to me echoed among crackling ambience for a meditative finishing touch

after a long hiatus the fasaan recordings crew finally emerges from their basement to break out a second volume of their chalice imprint. functioning as a looser side vehicle to fasaan, chalice is a home for rawer and more uncompromising side projects of the fasaan crew and their extended family. honing in on a murky zone of cheap-sounding machine rhythms and punchy boogie-influenced proto-house sounds, the chalice style is in your face and then out the door just like that: take it or leave it.

paulino vieira, bana, and their legendary troupe, voz de cabo verde, made lisbon the headquarters spearheading the musical revolution taking place within cape verdean emigre communities across europe in the 1980s. musicians from across the diaspora would eagerly travel to the portuguese capital to record. but in smaller pockets, second-generation krioulu musicians were independently contributing to one of the most lush periods of cultural innovation by immigrants in europe. in 1986, a group of nine teenagers — antonio monteiro, ambrosio gomes, emilio borges, fefa cabral, to pereira, pedro varela, celeste monteiro, clarisse, germano shares — formed the largely unknown, often overlooked, but consistently brilliant band, pilon. combining traditional funana rhythms and the hybrid colazouk style with psychedelic synth work and rugged guitar ostinatos, pilon refined their sound for years until releasing these recordings as part of their debut album, tradicao, in 1993, with a tight-knit unit of just five remaining members. the band is still a popular mainstay for parties in the cape verdean circles of frankfurt, paris, lyon, marseille, rotterdam, and geneva.

hiding slightly out of plain sight, australian producer mood j has been secretly crafting lush house jams for the last half decade bubbling just under the visible surface.
with the artist and asquith having briefly touched base at the beginning of the label’s journey, it took only a chance encounter in a ballarat bungalow in 2016 to reignite the flames of the artist-label relationship. jimmy surprisingly bumping into jon (mood j), as he was daze’s housemate in aus, whilst the lobster crew were on tour there.
mood j’s hard drive was stashed with archive of warm, sizzling, analogue studio tracks cooked to the nines, and so here we are just over 14 months later with the full epic debut in hand.

i released the original 12inch volume of five fingers of death battle breaks way back in 1998, while i was living in oakland and then san francisco during a time of incredible movement and creativity within the suddenly exploding scratch dj scene. the term turntablist, coined by dj disk, had yet to really catch on outside of the bay area scratch fraternity. having recently moved to california from new york, pauls turntable aesthetics were strictly 80s east coast and was more concerned with catching doubles (beat juggling) and overall party rocking. in other words, the science of scratching was not something i was even contemplating.needless to say, i was completely amazed and overwhelmed with what djs like qbert, shortcut, apollo and mixmaster mike were doing. arriving as the first release of the new sublabel series figure jams, this split ep by fabrizio lapiana and amotik serves not only as a crafty cut in its own right but also showcases a particular type of package, which figure will be facilitating from now on. the a-side is taken up by a pair of lapiana’s irresistably dense grooves that unmistakebly tread in the footsteps of his homeland’s highly emotional techno, unafraid of big melodies but also injecting just the right amount of twisted acid to set the floor ablaze. this sense of grandeur and space is also reflected in the work of fast-rising producer amotik. painting with his very own colours as an equally epic scenery, its bleak and post-apocalyptic landscape dominated by broken industrial beats and hypnotically swirling synths.

mei zhiyong had been instrumental in arranging dp’s tour of china. when mei zhiyong and dave phillips first met in beijing in july 2014, mei spoke not a word of english and dp not a word of chinese. and they we were to embark on an 18 city tour together. verbal communication between mei and dp was obviously difficult to say the least. it would often result in comical misunderstandings, total puzzlement or bewilderment, but it would also be a source of constant amusement with wonderful moments of instinctive trust. but then there is sound, the ultimate language… to return the favor, dp arranged a tour for mei and himself in october 2015 through 20 european cities. which is where the source material was recorded. dp then selected, dissected and transformed those recordings to work out something different, not just a collaboration, not just an amalgam of two styles, but something new for both. the compositions on this lp are the result.

in the collection ‘i got soul’, this new release, ‘groove wash’, is a reference to the movie ‘car wash’. same ingredients as the the previous volume : a bit of blaxploitation, some seventies soul mood, wah wah guitar and lots of groove !

artist susana estrada was one of the leading figures of the “destape” during the late 70s and early 80s, a period in spain when sexual openness and freedom of thought exploded just when the country was coming out of a dictatorship. . besides acting in lot of movies and musical plays, susana as a singer also released a few 45s, cassettes and one lp, “amor y libertad”, produced by the great josep llobell, which is now regarded as a cosmic disco classic. from that album, cosmic record store selected two tracks for side a of this 12”, “gózame ya” and “quítate el sostén”. for the b side, the label has included three edits in a nu-disco & cosmic vein by producers james rod, javi frías and mr. absolut aka sergio peña.

did he ever really leave berlin? yes: sascha funke was regularly in cologne. but then nowhere else. sure, as a dj and live artist he travelled around the world. but as a producer he always remained true to his peer labels bpitch control and kompakt with some minor exceptions. so far, so good. but now, just after the german that started his early attempts as a producer to-gether with paul kalkbrenner dropped some new feverish spaced out solo eps on imprints like multi culti and tiga’s turbo recordings label, the berlin born producer, dj and football fever victim re-leases his new, third solo album “lotos land” on tokyo’s finest platform for diverse musical adven-tures endless flight.

amsterdam producers and good friends kaap and scott franka have come together to start a new label and live act: working titles. kaap is best known as the label boss of tape cassette label yield, scott just debuted with his first 12” on quartet series. together they perform primarily hardware based live sessions. for their label they improvise, jam and record to press these takes only on vinyl. the idea is to capture the real, raw and authentic improvised moments as soon as possible after they happen, hence the name working titles. this first vinyl release features the wt001 and wt002 outtakes on one disc. these sessions were recorded by the pair in an abandoned cabin in the woods in the south of holland, surrounded by nature.

scotland s premier electro alchemist is back on shipwrec and this time flying solo with five shards of sharpened machine music. beats rain down in solid sheets, a hail of drum patterns pelt and pound. acid scorn, speeding snares and scorched sound roar and rumble in the menacing -days of rage.- the 12- hisses and howls, sending forth a searing line of percussion as gears crank and grown. -glasgow to detroit- is just as fiery, scorn and sparks leaping off burning bars. aggression is always at the surface, and behind the razor rhythms lurks a palpable paranoia, as in -daisy cutter- or -uprising.- the only respite comes with the complex and textured -stones and sticks.- harsh mechanics from an industrial heartland.

anno stamm is the revered 4/4 branch name of berlin’s lars stoewe. as anstam he has been at the forefront of dark beat science, touring extensively with the likes of moderat and thom yorke’s atoms for peace and has appeared at festivals ranging from mutek and ctm to sonar and dimensions. ‘annothek’ is his second ep for macro. the three tracks build on the same set of sound sources and offer three different views at their glowing core. elastic basslines pierce through a bed of sweet and warm chords, surrounded by sizzling noise percussion. definitely on the more introspective side, the three cuts offer a special emotional depth while maintaining a bit more than just enough oomph to get the action going. late night and early morning are the possible settings. it’s a declaration of tender love that comes with a gentle push towards the closest darkroom.

public release’s lucky thirteen and second release of 2017 is by another kindred spirit newcomer to the label, earth boys, a brooklyn-based duo that’s all dreamy keys, soft pads, peace frogs, throwback vibes, and deftly futuristic house rhythms, though not necessarily in that order. with trail mix, mike sherburn and julian duron have built four gloriously friendly, oddball house cuts— cheeky, choppy vocal samples juxtaposed against schmaltzy piano licks and punchy tribal rhythms rubbing against smooth bass figurations. their ironic sense of humor intersects with precisely crafted productions in a way that underscores both, making the ep a brilliant concoction of bouncy, energetic dance music that teases the genre as much as it revels in it. if that messes with your head, just shut down your left brain, drop the needle, take a big ol’ rip, and see where a microdose of earth boys will take you.
