given the underground acclaim heaped on marie davidson s previous albums - ultra-stylish affairs that blend elements of minimal wave, dark italo-disco, off-kilter electro and moody ambient - it s little surprise to see her popping up on minimal wave offshoot cititrax. the album s nine tracks are largely sharp, rough and fuzzy, with sparse-but-dense drum machines rhythms underpinning bouncy, delay-laden synth lines, thrusting electronics and davidson s sleazy, spoken word vocals. it s an attractive combination that guarantees thrills throughout, from the almost claustrophobic throb of -denial-, to the mutant electrofunk bounce of -good vibes-.

after a few digital releases, lunar convoy delivers a masterfully executed debut ep to inaugurate newcomer belgian imprint norites vinyl series. counting northern electronics, hypnus records, semantica and prologue among his main influences, lunar convoys first effort is utterly coherent while not failing to evoke a plurality of emotions. imbued with sacred atmospheres, infiltrated with mysticism, ritualistic melodies and aesthetically charged rhythms, outer rim territories is a testimony of his love for deeper realms. on the a side, seswennas trancey lead synth and pumping bass opens the ep with an excursion towards distant planets. ryloth ventures into darker fields, scattered with whirring and saturated analog complains and haunted by ancient voices. on the flip side, eriadu sets a more mystical pace with syncopated kicks and floating eerie pad, to embark on a parallel dimension. allens take on ryloth is symptomatic of the us-based producer, speeding things up and offering a stripped down version filled with devastating hi-hats and firing toms to end this solid 4-tracker with the hypnotic-yet-effective sound that got him signed on attic music, m_rec ltd, polegroup or more recently granulart recordings. with such a captivating release, lunar convoy has set a high bar for the upcoming releases and left us under his sway.

the sixth release in this series of eight opens up with alexander kowalskis remix of lydia to the edge of panic on the a-side. kowalskis version is a pounding techno monster, with a heaving baseline and delayed chords, hinting at a more sinister dimension beyond the edge of panic. trolly routes (aka. oscar mulero) remix of miscellaneous pt. 7 on a-2, lulls and hypnotizes with an acid-tinged interpretation of the original track, that nods to the plus 8 school of techno. the b-side kicks off with jeff rushins remix of little green apples, pairing the spacious and beautifully gloomy background atmosphere of the original track with a heavier version of its rhythmic framework. the final track gives us the re-mastered original version of confort corpse, which displays christian morgensterns uncanny dedication to exploration and his love for the 80s.

the martinez brothers cuttin headz returns with a new ep from the butcha, entitled 10001 and backed with two remixes from matrixxman. phil moffa aka the butcha is a new york city based musician, producer and engineer most notably known for his works alongside dj spider and anthony parasole for sublevel sounds / plan b recordings and alongside seth troxler for hypercolour. here we see him return to the fledgling cuttin headz imprint with his idiosyncratic take on raw, emotive house music following his destination void release alongside dj spider and brendon moeller last year. up first are two originals from the butcha, the first of which 99 prince st. lays focus on echoing atmospherics, snaking rhodes and shuffling dubbed out percussion while the latter, 6 hubert st. pivots towards an amalgamation an upfront organic rhythm alongside a weighty low end drive and wandering synth swells. to complete the package san franciscos matrixxman delivers two interpretations, firstly the acidized mix which as the name would suggest draws on squelching 303 lines layered over processed snippets from the original before the digital bonus transhuman mix closes on an arpeggio fuelled techno tip.

ethimms second ep when in dark delivers the groups signature tension music with moods oscillating between suicidal heartbreak and conciliatory optimism. in the opening track why (a cover of the rhythm and sound classic), producer elisabeth thimm sets the stage for guest singer veronique to mourn love s loss, while brian gimmel s improvised piano licks hold strong agains the songs relentless bassline. the follow-up track late features lexx s dreamy lyrics gracing a subtle dance foor tune for spaced-out souls. the b side opens with ethimms love for dub. next is a freaked-out meditation on what has been and will be, while the fnal track done slowly creeps towards its peak, refecting on dark days where light may have not been much in sight, but going forward sees optimism, increased resolution, and drive.

french artist kool vibe is back on his own paris-based label kv records with a new 4 track ep. true to the mission assigned to the label, this release brings us back to the early 90s through basics sounds and elements which have defined deep house since then : fat syncopated rhythms, heavy and groovy basslines, warm chopped vocals. there is something raw and genuine about this record. basics and back to the reala definitely emphasize the minimal and raw side of deep house. tribute is humbly dedicated to the legendary todd terry, whose ultimate knowledge of the art of sampling contributed to shape house music in the early days. at last, sleazy joint (touch it, suck it) closes the record with a nasty and sexy touch. anyway, the whole ep is meant for the dancefloor and the simple pleasure of partying.
