futureboogie open their 2017 account with a new release from lizards, the newcastle based duo otherwise known as lee forster and james hadfield. after appearances on labels like leng records, join our club and not an animal records, lizards strut their stuff across two original tracks, whilst man of the moment lord of the isles weighs in with a superb remix. the percussion driven house of “tzatziki” kicks of the release, wrapped in warm and inviting pads and piano riffs. shades of old school chicago house meet sun-kissed balearic vibes on this early morning riser, as the heavyweight bass sounds curl around the raw drum programming and illuminating keys sprinkle over the production. on “aloof”, the tempo is taken down somewhat, as a bass line wanders over a steady kick and otherworldly ambient sounds and hushed vocal clips lazily glide over the 4/4 arrangement. as the track unfurls, more melodic and percussive elements come into play, blossoming into a something quite epic and unique. with a slew of releases for quality imprints like permanent vacation, firecracker, mule musiq and esp institute, neil mcdonald, aka lord of the isles, serves up a deliciously chugging version of aloof. gurgling bass and marching handclaps are dowsed in dramatic synth sweeps and glacial tones, as the good lord takes us on a monumental ride.

after an ep on creme organization off-shoot jericho one as dj plant texture, dona basile now assumes his dona alias for a new ep on the main label. entitled the v.g.p sessions, it features four new cuts from the italian, with three of them being dj pt mixes. up first is a live cut version of energia , a bristling electro track with globular bass and coarse hits. turbulent but full of synth based serenity, it is a fine start. cigarettes (djpt mix) is rugged and broken, with glossy idm synths and corrugated drums all loosely arranged into something prickly and unsettling. the deads at twelve (djpt mix) then gets even more fucked up, with rusty synths and blown out drums making for a dystopian house groove that will likely soundtrack the apocalypse. last but not least, nr. 13 (djpt mix) mixes up detroit synths, wild acid, heavenly chords and chopped up, buried deep vocal samples into something that will fire every synapse in your body. this is outlier stuff from dona that sounds like little else.

advanced deep driving techno from amsterdam! jp enfant s let recordings continues to slowly but surely build a fine reputation, and in fact his last ep on the label featured a track, sirens , which got used to great effect by daniel avery on his acclaimed dj kicks mix. now a fourth interesting ep on let recordings comes from shoal, who makes his first out on vinyl after a digital release on planet rhythm in october. utrecht based shoal aims to balance his techno sounds somewhere between rhythmic hypnosis and detailed soundscaping. he urges listeners to twitch out of their comfort zone and to really engage with his music. that is made all the more easy given that it is such inventive stuff. a powerful ep from this emerging new artist.

fancy humans leigh morgan has been knocking around a while, running urban torque recordings for the best part of a decade throughout the naughties. having reached a satisfactory level of noodle shinnery on his baldy bonce, he has put down the scalp polish and finally started making music. project pickle is his second solo ep. project pickle includes three original tracks, nailing his colours to the mast, dilly of a pickle begins with a clear indication of pickle preference, pie on the sly the accompanying dish, and almost champion a nod to the ultimate disappointment in food related release punnery. we asked chocky to come on board for remix duties, once he d told us which was his favourite pickle, his answer we ll take to our graves. chocky has been winning plaudits for his deep dubby jazzy grooves through artful division, nature soul music, roots for bloom and audio parallax etc, and here he s on great form with, er, a deep dubby jazzy re-imaging, lovely stuff.

end of dayz 009 is by the mysterious 30drop. his works are described by himself as detroit techno inspired music mixed with repetitive european techno. in this release -on the next day ep- we find on a side the terror history called -they saw it again- and the jeroen search remix that is a very danceable rhythmic techno with some cosmic stuff. the b side is for -raw- where we can listen to some space bells. here is the remix by an old friend of this label, p.e.a.r.l., bringing the track into a darker place.

this is an album of deeply emotional music. it s not all heartfelt niceties and eye-welling moods though. rhythmic theory did after all come to light (or should that be dark) in the gloomy alleyways of uk soundsystem music begat from dubstep and all that other stuff. -creeper- is on hand to affirm that this is a record still steeped in true, stern moodiness, where a stalking sub line, some metallic percussion and an icy drone can still strike fear more than a thousand angry wobble basslines. it s worth noting how much attention has been given to shorter vignettes. as well as the aforementioned, cryptically titled -interlude-, -work of fiction- and -end (of forever)- both give insights into the places rhythmic theory cares to roam beyond the structure of a long form track. these are places where melancholic or downright ambiguous dispositions interplay with each other, from the synthetic to the earthly, the malevolent to the tender. in the end, even at its most monochromatic, nothing is black and white on rhythmic theory s debut album, and that s just fine with us.

ive been involved in two or three major genres that are very different from each other, says vaughn robert squire from canada, better known as prison garde, who is making his true romance debut with our trep009. about his melody ep, he says: its gospel-influenced house stuff. its in line with the last couple records that i put out, but i feel like its a little more mature and that the quality of the recording is a lot higher than anything else ive done as prison garde. i recorded it at the phi centre in montreal - its a beautiful cultural center in the old port. ango and i locked ourselves in there and did a live record on an ssl in a big room.

for the fifth installment in the common thread series we are launching our series of various artists eps called *knives replace air*. for the first effort in this series we have the likes of chinaski, mangulicafm, 33.10.3402 and gitchell moore cooking up stuff. expect an odd mixture of genres all sharing a common thread in terms of feel. maybe not the most dancefloor friendly record but definitely some kind of miniature soundtrack in its own right.

eddie c come back to endless flight with 2 brand new tracks and excellent move d remix! title track on a side is one of the most danceable track from eddie c. it s simply floor killer. on b side, flying blue is alternative disco stuff, it s typical eddie c sound. move d remix of la palette is stripped version of original brazilian house track. its more dj tool for the fan of work shop or german deep house.

the maghreban is new to house music, and doesnt really listen to house music, which isnt necessarily a bad thing. he has worked extensively in other genres under other names. looking at house from these sideways perspectives perhaps gives him an interesting angle on it. these first two tracks sound a little vintage and there is much more of this stuff to come, all quite dancefloor orientated. early support from call super and gatto fritto and radio play from thristian on nts.

:-crimini- is a new independent label born from the experience of some members of the mighty kitchentstudio3, based in bologna italy. the first release contains on the first side three track by nas1 duo. the young duo work at the kitchenstudio3 since 2011, where they produced a lot of good stuff, including a track featuring kyle hall (released by wild oats music), their debut ep on bosconi records, two tracks released by nick anthony simoncino s hotmix records, and many other cool works. on the other side there is a power track, spinning at 45 tmp, produced by the mysterious grienkho, appeared on pushmaster records and austerity, and kosmik, legendary record collector from south of italy.

ednic is the italian duo of nicola di gabbia and edoardo cortopassi, and by all intents and purposes, they’re an outfit that’s on to a good thing right now. the guys make quality, analog-enriched house and techno, the likes of which comes to the fore here on puas puas, a vinyl only label that’s already featured the likes of the mole, alex piccini and carola pisaturo amongst others. first up on the exceptionally refined strands of the auberste ep sis the sounds of the original, which is a barnstorming cacophony of acid flourishes and tension-filled motifs. a track that’ll keep you on the edge of your seat for some time, it features shades of old-school electro and techno, and is the sort of track that’ll definitely rescue any ailing dancefloor. the aforementioned carola pisaturo then perks up with the first of her two remixes courtesy of her brilliant ‘church’ mix. a bumping and grinding interpretation on the original, it too keeps the suspense high, most notably thanks to a dizzying array of melodies and a series of potent basslines. her ‘botta’ remix is a more stripped back affair, albeit one that still speaks to fans of discerning fare thanks to its relentless attitude. full of shiny percussion and the odd sultry vocal smidgen, it’s further indication of a producer who looks set to enjoy an excellent 2015. this is classy stuff indeed from the puas puas label.

hailing from holland, ekman has been haunting the dancefloors for some time now with his deformed acid influenced dark and nasty slow electro and techno tunes. his sound fits in perfect in between drugged out techno and new beat / early techno stuff. even some classic electro touches are in there. simply excellent for your not so average dance party, but who likes average anyway.

a yawning desert covers and oppresses a distant daemon-sphere pregnant with the stuff of a thousand earths. clouds of the same hue and attitude as the infinite sands gradually dominate the sky, possessed of a malign intelligence. a trans-generational caravan cuts an unforgiving line through the dunes in a fruitless mission to close its great mad circle, forever missing by just miles. it is a roving, innumerable harem in liege to an unsexed tyrant who sings them this song, reproduced here by resonant hole emissaries jeanne vomit-terror and ed sunspot, as the caravan commits the abominable act of transgressing the horizon into the infant sky-desert “above.” carl calm’s “gulf of night” mix is a monster, as is the great mike simonetti’s perverse interpretation!

edux return from a winter hibernation and summer of partying with some more essential wax. machete savane is their latest signing, aka studio supremo saul richards & andy bainbridge, an integral part on well respected and notoriously raucous party people bad passion andy has perfectly distilled what drives the bad passion dancefloor in the excellent >elysian fields<, and who better to put a unique stamp on the track than their main resident guest felix dickinson. he takes the track into bolder, dubbed out and altogether more acid house territory, while keeping the live elements to the fore. finally mid op amps up the drum machinery, and lays out another corking balearic with balls workout. quality stuff as always.

the highly anticipated squeaky lobster ep has been worth every second of the wait. in terms of sample / synth selection, song structure and sound quality, no expense has been spared. hi-fi synthetic drums intertwine with lo-fi sampled kicks & snares whilst heavy stretched out synth bass lines are topped with bollywood-esque string samples, 80s guitar bridges & plenty of other orchestral mayhem. the lush, thick melodic layers mount up into a frequently spine-tingling whole whilst the rhythm section, although outside the box, does by no means neglect the headnod factor. the incredible feat here is that although no 8 bars are quite the same as the next, a sense of unity is preserved within each genre-defying track, making it the stuff of epic journeys. you may start your listening experience in front of your turntable, staring at the record spinning, but you will end up somewhere quite different, squeaky lobster has made sure of that. as man from phone number 770021 would say: >this is $50.000. good luck.<
