the one-two kick drum beat that starts “in the dark of the night” functions as a bit of a tease. instead of merely establishing the languid pace of the track, it has the power of suggestion, and its stark nakedness raises the question of what will happen after the music fully launches. a few seconds later, a punch-drunk, flanging keyboard is the first clue that the listener is in for an off-kilter ride, the sauntering bassline that next appears adds a springy, funk bounce. but it’s the tripped-out, multi-tracked vocals of fernando miranda rios, aka michoacan, the producer behind this slow reveal, that give the song its peculiar, space-yvibe. it’s like david byrne with funk aspirations and a vaguely cosmic feel. the b-side remix, courtesy of italy’s clap rules, feels like more of a re-build. the song has been taken apart and put back together with brand new parts. instead of more relaxed, dazed funk at the core, it’s a glittery, disco-ball splattered track with glossy keys all around.
the new minimalrome series for clubbers in sick-leave! the hacker known for his classic releases with miss kittin comes with a new track called -haunted- which is a kraftwerk, dopplereffekt inspired electro track, with an 808 punching pattern counterpointing a deep analogue bassline enveloped in rich, harmonic pads. on the b side, a remix by feedback remix who delivers a solid acid electro techno work out as we know of some lory d and early passarani works. the second remix is the banda banetti remix (a new minimalrome project) with pulsating acid lines and fast paced hautning techno electro beats. get those strobe lights flashin!! mrx records are sadly limited to 250 copies

the in the box e.p. is a fine example of niedermeier & whiteheads no-nonsense style, combining melodic, muscular grooves with deep basses and balearic percussion, the e.p. is a slice of raw tech and deep house class. with a relentless funky beat, in the box pays homage to classic tech-house form whilst maintaining a tracky musical edge that highlights the pairs dj background. with their penchant for diversity, short fuse is something truly unique, quirky pads and filtered fx gives this track a deep house vibe whilst a smoky lead ensures the techy theme is maintained. tales of old has all the essences of modern deep techno, it rolls along with a straightforward beat and a clean unpretentious production flavour. the simple vocal stabs and smooth fx hits are driven along by a wonderfully deep timpani that shakes some air but never interferes with the warm, round sub bass pining the groove together. lastly is out of place, a deep grooving track with an aggressive manner. through a series of dynamic peaks and troughs, technoid percussion and funky vocal hits, this track provides an appropriate addition to this perfect release
