marko nastic s third edition of easy tiger brings together some of the finest artists of the genre. each true to their own style, v.i.c.a.r.i., marc & nils and sakro take their interpretations of marko’s bold, housey, morning inspired tune. v.i.c.a.r.i. keeps it low, tuned to afterparties mood, while sakro and marc & nils orientate their remixes more to club, prime time grooves, encircling the ep to four completely different tunes, set for different moods and individual preferences.

next up on francis harris exceptional imprint scissor & thread comes a collaboration with american producer, dj aakmael. aakmael has built a reputation for some of the deepest, rawest house music sounds coming out of the states, releasing well-received tracks on the likes of freerange records, release sustain, kolour dogmatik and ndatl. returning to scissor & thread, aakmael and label boss harris cook up an intoxicating vibe across this 5 track ep. each shares a track and work together on the fifth, while also remixing each others solo cuts. first up aakmaels deep muzik- a quintessential nod to its self-proclaimed mission statement. skittering drums, a shuffling groove, deep keys, and chords make up this essential opener. franks (aka francis harris) all that light mix shows another side, finding pockets of space and developing the fizzing percussion to produce an equally affecting piece of dancefloor bliss. sharing production duties from the outset on mercy of means, the guys slip into an easy mid-tempo groove with plenty of depth - the rhythm rolls along and offers the perfect basis for some sublime melodic touches. franks part song also hones in on the subtle deep grooves. bumping, slightly filtered and saturated drums provide the main body, with beautiful washes and keys finding their way through, aakmaels remix beefs up the groove somewhat, making the snares snap harder and kick hit a little stronger, but the essence of the tracks melodic atmosphere remains perfectly in place.

arkansas native, lee moore moved to memphis in 1975 with only one goal in mind: to make it big in the music industry and to release music that would be played in new york, l.a and everywhere in between. as a singer and songwriter lee moore spent the 1980s collaborating in memphis with the best of the best session musicians and vocalists from labels like volt and stax records to record and release futuristic boogie, soul, and funk. lee moore unfortunately never got close to reach his goals of fame and fortune. for the first time, past due records is reissuing lees incredible free & easy lp which was only released as a handful of test pressings in 1981 because lee thought the record was too good to release on his score records label. it is a pure memphis modern soul / boogie funk masterpiece that features countless artists from the stax crew, al greens vocalists and even herbie hancocks keyboard player. the 1981 test pressing has commanded huge sums of money on the used vinyl market and is one for the real soul connoisseur

willie hutch wrote huge soul hits in the 60s and 70s (co-writing “i’ll be there” for the jackson 5) and released sixteen motown, whitfield and independent label solo releases between 1969 and 2002. from his period with norman whifield’s label through warner brother in 1978/79 he is best known for “easy does it”. arranged by gene page, it was previously issued only on 7” as a b-side to “come on and dance with me”, original copies now exchanging hands for large sums.

melchior sultana has not been short of labels to release on over the past few years, from deepartsounds and three fingers musique to minuendo and 12records, but here he can be found inaugurating the profound sound label with some of his trademark deep house tones. -feel this- is a shimmering, nocturnal groover with mystery to match its subtle funkiness, while the live edit of -give it to the moon- has an easier vibe about it with its lingering, warm pads and breezy swing. -treasures- shakes things up with a jazz funk twist, letting effervescent instrumentation flirt around the crooked house beat with stunning results and then the slow, sensual original version of -give it to the moon- cradles the remaining run time of the ep in a downtempo haze of easy beats and stirring vocals.

taylor freels has built quite a strong catalog over the years. his work under his urulu moniker, is widely regarded as top quality deep house and the banshee ep continues in this fashion. the title track has a dreamlike atmosphere to it. the banshee is a work that will strike a chord with lovers of the ocean-influenced sounds and hazy atmospheres. a strong presence of strings and dubby sounds, create a certain laidback mood that is perfect for sun drenched days in the park. chicagoan producer garrett david builds on the hazy atmospheres of the original, while adding some melodic elements to his remix of the banshee where he cleverly shifts between scales and different moods.
quadrant beat is a warm track that is built around warm chords and fashionable drum sounds. again, urulu makes sure to weave some outgoing dub elements into this b-side opening track. romance track is most likely one of the berlin based producer’s most melodic works to date. beautifully executed piano hits flow together seemingly easy over a sturdy rhythm that serves as the track’s backbone. the banshee ep is a work of lush deep house and an excellent addition to both urulu’s repertoire and the saft label catalog.

ambient shoegaze duo aris kindt launch the new kingdoms imprint with their second album, swann and odette. picking up where their first record (2015Æs floods) leaves off, swann and odette is an evolutionary leap forward for the duo. the sonic palette is deeper, the grooves more sparse and the melodies are given more room to seep deep within a mix so expansive it feels almost tactile. this is heady, opulent stuff. the album is immaculately produced and cunningly arranged to sidestep easy classification while not sacrificing accessibility and authentic feeling. aris kindt is the collaborative project of gabe hedrick and francis harris (scissor and thread). harris has previously released the albums leland (2012) and minutes of sleep (2014), both of which have been lauded ôfor (their) extensive use of live instruments, a contrasting feature to his work done beforeö (last.fm, 2016). building on this approach, hedrick adds his own sonic signature in effects-laden layers of electric guitar and modular synthesizer. collectively, the album swells and reverberates to create a seamless interplay of synths and instrumentation cast loose from their origins and awash in oceanic delay.

third root is a central texas hip-hop collaborative that focuses on black and brown overlapping culture and identity. the group consists of charles peters (easy lee), marco cervantes (mexican stepgrandfather), and dj chicken george (djcg). peters is an accomplished poet and educator, cervantes is a producer and ph.d. who teaches at the university of texas at san antonio, and djcg is a world-renowned dj, musicologist, designer & jazztronica! peddler. their latest album, libertad, produced entirely by grammy award winner adrian quesada (grupo fantasma, brownout, echocentrics, spanish gold), reflects today’s current mobilization among black and brown communities in the face of debilitating cycles of police brutality, ?awed educational systems, privately owned prisons and detainment centers, corporately owned politicians, and racist judicial systems. the album delivers a mix of social justice and jam session with each song designed to raise questions, incite discussion, and promote healing and liberation. “reflection of the times” and “soul force” are the leading singles from libertad.

2017 reissue , love what you feel returns with a new release by chicago native and half of africans with mainframes (mathematics recordings/creme organization), noleian reusse! the tracks on this record mostly eschew an easy four-on-the-floor rhythm in favor of raw, jacking beats. using an all-hardware set-up, noleian banged out all new tunes especially for this five track ep. the machine funk runs wild from the jumpoff, sometimes exotic, sometimes abstract, and sometimes banging, but never typical. the cuts on this record are versatile enough to fit into both techno and house sets, and there is even a dubstep-esque track that will have crossover appeal!
