here at quantize we simply love confounding expectations cos, guess what? we love all kinds of music and don t like to be stereotyped. but this one even surprised the hell out of us so much so that we figured it deserved a 7inch vinyl release in tribute to the original format. think (about it) was originally recorded 45 years ago in the summer of 1972 by the fiery lyn collins. produced by the godfather of soul, james brown, it barely scraped into the rnb top 10 at the time and normally would have faded into time as just another great james brown produced record but in 1987, it started to get sampled by a new generation of hip-hop artists like roxanne shante and robe base and dj e-z rock. suddenly the world woke up to the possibilities of sampling and since that point, think (about it) has been sampled 1908 times and is the no.3 most-sampled record of all time. so we decided to cut a new version of it with real musicians and one of the few vocalists that would be capable of matching lyn collins firepower - dance music s diva supreme, the incredible barbara tucker. we wanted barbara to really cut loose on this and she didn t disappoint. and yes, those are real keyboards, real guitar and real horns. believe us, this session was off the scale! so when we finally got our breath back we decided we had to get this out on a 45 on its 45th anniversary! it seemed the most appropriate way to do justice to a record that simply jumps outta the grooves. we believe think (about it) will have universal appeal pretty much everywhere since the song is now implanted within the dna of dance music across the world.

doorly s reptile dysfunction continues to prove itself to be one of the most vibrant and singular labels around, this time tapping up legendary producer jaydee for its latest release. jaydee is a dance music pioneer. best know for the seminal plastic dreams - a track that, somewhat terrifyingly for those who remember it the first time around, will be celebrating its 25 th anniversary next year - he has continued to be a leading light in innovative house and techno productions, releasing on r&s and ellum audio in the last few years. here, he teams up with fellow dance music visionary doorly for a searingly brilliant release on the latter s reptile dysfunction imprint. acid pressure ep presents two original cuts from jaydee, with supporting remixed from doorly and trooko. kicking things off, back into acid opens with stunningly heartfelt pads before building to a killer acid line via shimmering percussion and erotically charged vocal snatches. bring the pressure is more direct: a house roller softened by basic channel-esque chords and with added rhythm courtesy of the accompanying ragga chants. on the remix front, doorly flips back into acid into something far more menacing, with fierce synths stabs and rolling drums creating a head down stomper, while trooko chops back into pressure into pieces, crafting a thumping main room house cut from the constituent parts, complete with an epic, piano-led breakdown.

since four triangles was founded to release material from previously unheralded artists working in the space between house, techno and vintage rave, it seems fitting that the label’s second release should come from an analogue explorer still making his way in the world.

naoki e-jima s disc shop zero record store in tokyo holds a special place in our hearts. since before idle hands was even established, when rooted records was king, the cosy, liberally stocked shop has served as a sympathetic outpost for bristol s rich culture of soundsystem music. over the years, naoki has championed all the best music to come from our fair city, from smith & mighty through to pinch and pev and on to the output from our own humble label. it s been a vital connection to help our music reach the right heads on the other side of the world, in turn providing a platform for our most treasured artists to gig and further the cause of the music we love. as a thank you for all the support naoki has shown bristol music over the years, idle hands has put together a special tribute 10inch of tracks that chime with his particular musical tastes, shining a light on some complementary gems that might have otherwise never seen the light of day. its also a chance to fill in the missing idle013 catalogue number – fortunately, the number 13 does not represent bad luck in japanese culture. on the a-side, the mighty (pun intended) rob smith takes to a track from outboxx s debut album, originally intended for a remix 12inch that never came to be. in his learned hands, lost soul becomes a shimmering stepper marked out by beautiful cascading arpeggios and of course plenty of fulsome bass, with arresting fragments of vocal drifting in and out of the mix for good measure. rob s status as a true legend of bristol music needs no explanation, but his presence here is furthermore because naoki is such a fan of his music. on the b-side, atki2 makes a welcome return to the label after bringing a classic ray of sunshine to idle hands on the second single we ever put out. as well as being a big release for us, it was apparently huge at disc shop zero, so it feels right to bring the effervescent hes royal to this 10inch release. with a sunny disposition at heart, these two tracks make sense sharing a 10inch, but it s even more fitting that they sit side by side as we doff our caps to a true hero of the global underground. thanks, naoki.

2 years ago, we celebrated our 10 years with 5 anniversary eps entitled 10 by ten, where we asked 10 of our favorite artists to write an exclusive track for the occasion. two of the stand out tracks were martin iveson - aka atjazz - leave me here as well as art of tones, koniokola, which we thought deserved a second life. freerange and delusions of grandeur boss, jimpster, blesses us with his deep yet driving rendition of leave me here, while fred everything chooses to update koniokola with a more dance floor approach and a strip down dub. we also included the original of leave me here which was never available on vinyl.

tomoki tamura s holic trax label has long been renowned as a canny exporter of clued in house and techno. their latest continues in this regard, as tamura again calls on a series of renowned label friends to bring the heat. with names such as mr.g, satoshi tommie and tuccillo all appearing it here alongside tamura himself, it s no surprise that this 3 x vinyl record, celebrating 5 years of the label, is filled with drama and high points throughout. this is immediately obvious from mr.gs soba shioyaki. titled in homage to the label s japanese heritage, it s a dark and dexterous workout that marks another high point in a career filled with big records. deep but tough, it s a perfect of why the tech house master is so revered in underground circles. gs komorebi puts a tough emphasis on the drums, as well as a weaving, subtle baseline that adds a further dynamic to his work here.

sven weisemann is set to release his ‘bilateral relations’ ep via copenhagen’s echocord this september, comprising four originals from the german producer. sven weisemann has been immersed in the underground house and techno scene for quite some time now having started djing in 1997 during the rise of the scene on his home turf of berlin and going on to release material via the likes of amsterdam’s delsin, mojuba, telrae and liebe.detail amongst many more. here though we see sven joining the roster of echocord, a perfect fit for his more dubbed out compositions with artists like fluxion, rod modell and stl on the roster. ‘lunation’ opens the release and sees weisemann fuse emotive string melodies and cavernous vocal echoes with off- kilter rhythms and rounded sub hits before title-track ‘bilateral relations’ embraces a more direct four-four approach via sparse percussion and tumbling toms alongside choppy bass stabs and ever-unfolding, echoing dub chords. opening the flip is ‘monistic’, an airy ethereal number employing billowing pads, bright synth chimes and a dropped tempo dubbed out feel to create something truly stunning and thought provoking before the ‘decimation (valvle tr9 mix) closes things on a darker tip with looming stab swells, heavily swung drums and sporadic growling bass drones.

new deeptrax release by g.w. hailing from london. this is the new fifth deeptrax ep from the mysterious ruffien. immensely diverse sounds from the caverns of south-east london. hypered house, dungeonesque taped techno, dirty filthy electro and lo-fi dubby idm, all combined with that delicate grimy touch.

producer and dj from cantabria pablo bolívar signs the new release in his very own seven villas, in which he takes the chance to interpret --remixwise-- the tracks on the album traverse -by sensual physics which was originally released in 7v in 2016.

we are facing a very special project for pablo bolívar this time. his admiration for the veteran german producer joerg schuster -one of pablo s musical heroes- gets highly reflected in each one of the eight revisions which form this traverse (reprise) . what pablo exactly does is to respect the original escapist, dubby and ambient spirit of the original trip proposed by traverse , by means of adding a soft, deep and sophisticated club aura. he turn that the album sensual physics takes into the most characteristic bolívar style is tasteful and subtle, therefore it seems a sequel of the original one. no crashes, no harshness. here everything flows simply in a natural way, especially that ambient-deep and tech fog which just adds a punch in any case. tunes as mondragon , málaga or miracle -among others- acquire a new dimension when touched by pablo bolívar s hands: always looking to their origin with respect to the original producer and the delicacy of a revised piece of work.

roman producer (and a force behind minimalrome label) valerio lombardozzi known as heinrich dressel returns to barba with a second release for our label, titled -the styx swamp-. heinrich has a unique way of combining classic techno and electro sounds with elements from the beloved drexcyan universe and john carpenter leitmotifs, and making them come together in a manner that both moves your body and pushes your mind beyond the point of awareness. as with the previous record, -lurking underwater-, here he pulls off the move with the same efficiency and without sounding like he s repeating himself. -gray slope-, -sailing the nether waterways- and -the styx swamp- are all quite moody and deep, rich with sound and thick with vibe. however, the tracks feel equally at home in 4 am techno situation and a heady afterhours affair. he truly is a master of crafting hybrids whose influences get so flawlessly embedded that it s hard to point them out. if that s not enough, -the styx swamp- got a treatment by nigel rogers aka perseus traxx, a multi-faceted producer and a mighty live act performer. nigel stayed respectful to the original but made the original s bouncy groove into something more direct and reduced, while retaining the same feel conditioned by lead synth s hypnotic quality. we re known to give a little bit of extra love to our releases so (as all before) this one s pressed onto a heavy duty 180 gram vinyl and beautifully packaged in an original artwork by emaemaema.

re-release of beverly glenn-copeland’s rural canadian new age suite for dx7 and tr707 …keyboard fantasies… with new carefully reconstructed glasswork design by alan briand beverly glenn-copeland is already known amongst collectors and music heads for two sought-after albums of folky jazz in the key of joni. but it was this album, originally self-released on cassette in 1986 that really caught our attention. the album, entirely recorded on dx-7 and tr-707, lies somewhere between digital new-age and (accidentally) early detroit techno experiments. the inimitable style of bgc here is both peaceful and meditative while simultaneously rhythmic and bass heavy. the album was recorded in the northern canadian town of huntsville where bgc was living at the time and is a beautiful fusion of personal vision, technology and place.

the crooked man returns to bitter end with an emotional copy only limited pre-release of powerful club pieces... keen eyed aficionado s may spot the homage to mel cheron s classic us label west end records here but while their motto may have been where the sun sets & the stars rise bitter end records embarks on a distinctly more 21st century path to dancefloor salvation... echo loves narcissus - part 1 is the opening salvo in a sonic saga across four movements, marrying, as it does irresistibly uplifting chords and vocal ad-libs to a bass line so thick it ll rattle the windows right out of your ride and knock the tiles straight off the walls of your cerebral restroom. once you ve adequately composed yourselves, we invite you to the 11 minute monster which is get the love on the aa... this recalls the brief but genre defying 1990 jams from mundo muzique s revelation project: synth assisted house-nosis, buoyed by the mantric voice imploration to accept higher states of carnality atop an immersive blanket of propulsive rhythms. once again bitter end rips up the rule book, and crafts a whole set of new, better ones in which freedom reigns light years ahead !

first ep of the label lowlife cartel. dissociative tones, texture of the sound and atmosphere sought here, more than melody. no boundary in genre but same sonic ethos. the two sides of the ep includes two tracks ambient/downtempo fitting with patient listening. three other, lofi tracks, and more efficient to play into clubs. face a starts with -nerve splicing- by telekommunist, also known as wpx7, face covered and steps muffled through a deadening blizzard of tape saturation and white noisey envelops that find a balance between deepening the sense of immersion and a retained groove. -kairu- by a. latif, affiliated to the experimental and elusive russian label john s kingdom. an arsenal of textures are employed, surrounded all the time by different kind of breeths carving out a growingly satisfying contrast between the shivery charm of its melodic line and the roughness of its elements. a rough diamond. face b, -kfs-, by vslds (present on the next cousin carl release, after kinway and voyd) is a delusional and abstract piece of lofi hip hop. setting skittish drums and heavily altered rapper vox sample, smothered against a grey-ish canvas of blurry, washed-out pads. this feels both playful and unhealthy. -gotta go fast-, by paul santangelo (venetian causeway), is marked with the very personal style of this artist who does his way across the ever effervescent lofi techno scene. the round, drag-shed bass, fits with an introspective melody and atmosphere. -every man has a woman who loves him-, by loophie (raw russians), surprises the listener at the end of the disc with a lofi house track sampled from john lennon, very effective in club. the czech lofi house videomaker moskalus edited a video of it on his youtube channel. 5 artists to follow.

the highly-anticipated ep, despite everything , written and produced by italian techno artist, ayarcana, with remixes by london based producer manni dee, along with berlin based producer, huren, is finally here. this is the second release for omen recordings, once again archiving the dark sounds and malignant spirit of techno.

the make mistakes gang returns with their second record in the form of remixes of roy england s techno rocker, photon. what you get here is a package of dance floor cuts showcasing the varied styles, and tastes of the crew, making this a versatile record that s gonna find a way to fit in where ever it s needed. on the a side we have a taste of attentat s signature sound: hypnotic, driving minimal techno. a slowly evolving meditation, this stripped down, pulsing jam will ignite the late night dance floor. an irrepressible tinkerer, roy england took the original, funked it up, worked it out, and streamlined it for peak time. in his remix, roy crafted a consummate party jam, steady, pumping, and full of life. with his remix, time for trees takes you on a psychedelic, housey frolic through the woods. what we have here is a slow building, mind-bending groove, wrapped up in cascading waterfalls of sound. the make mistakes label has built a diverse sound around a cohesive aesthetic. with the photon remixes, they continue that tradition, with style and depth, fine-tuned for dance floor lovers.

as bpmf started making techno again, he surveyed his techno friends asking them what it was about his music they found the most annoying. the answers? tr-606 hi-hats and portamento. he proceeded to focus on these aspects of his music and today the results are here: -abide the glide volume 4- wherein bpmf is pushing all the right buttons to get the dj thinking about the sounds their pumpin. jamie morris provides an excellent dj freindly remix of -even straighter-, taking bpmf s idea and going even straighter.

when octo octa sent us the demos for her first full-length record since 2013, we were floored by how many tracks were single worthy. but, there was one that stood out as something entirely on its own, a song that in many ways sounded like nothing maya had ever released. since the beginning, we always knew we wanted to do something special with adrift, the 8+ minute space-age synth-dub techno tune. when we asked maya about doing a 12inch with remixes we were blindsided to learn she has never had any of her music remixed before. with some remixers in mind, she asked two of her favorites and they said yes. so, here we are to present hny-016 octo octa adrift, remixed by avalon emerson and dorisburg.

raphael ray munnings is famously known as the band leader and singer of the mighty bahamian funk legends the beginning of the end, he is also a formidable solo artist in his own right with a clutch of sought after, rare 7- singles throughout the early to late 70 s as well as numerous appearances with his band. opportunity knockin from 1972 is an early one from ray, released on tk disco s alston imprint, it s often been a rare 45 and doesn t show up very often. opportunity knockin is channelling the usual sun-soaked vibes of his later material this single is a sweet one for summertime, breezy horn infused funk with tough drums and that caribbean vibe. the b-side is also a winner, sleep on, dream on is an uptempo slice of wah wah driven soul with a serious groove and a peace-loving, ecologist theme running through ray s vocals. sublime stuff, for real fans of funk and soul rarities! nab this rare 45 of caribbean soul, re-issued here in it s original 45 rpm format with the original alston label artwork. it s been re-mastered, re-pressed and made available again with the permission of tk disco / alston records, miami florida, usa.

stefan schwander aka harmonious thelonious is definitely not a newcomer. he has been around for a long time and has already released lots of amazingly varied music on labels such as emotional response, italic, meakusma and diskant. he’s also an integral part of the infamous duesseldorf / salon des amateurs axis that is an obvious hotbed of talent. he describes his style as -american minimalism vs. african drumming vs. european sequencing-, a heady mixture which is clearly evident on this ep though with a definite middle eastern twist. here at versatile hq we were introduced to this clutch of tracks by one of the members of acid arab and we were totally blown away. stefan has a very unique production style, fusing all of the above elements with a hint of gamelan, a dash of tweaked fm synthesis type sounds with a dose of warm ambience and finally his own singular touch on the mix. we are very happy to present you these 4 tracks to you, an essential ep from one of european music s true originals.
