impulsive and intuitive hardware house & techno from vancouver duo minimal violence aka ashlee luk & lida p. the five tracks on night gym soundtrack urban landscapes, textured synths, heavy kicks, and dense polyrhythms come together to form the duo s own brand of outsider house. citing influence from both minimal synth and chicago house, night gym arrives hot off the heels of the duo s self titled ep on dublin based first second label which closely examined the intersections that lay between punk and techno. recorded in february/march 2016 in the duo s home studio, the instinctual nature of live work flow plays an important role in the duo s creative process. utilizing hardware (sh-101, tr-606/505/707, waldorf blofeld, juno-60, dx-21, mpc1000) in addition to sourced samples with final compositions compiled and manipulated in ableton, night gym is an example of the duo s diverse interests and collaborative nature. the duo recruited visual support from chicago based graphic designer kevin mccaughey of nonporous for the distinct imagery of night gym. as well he designed the poster that comes in the 12- and screen printed a limited run of long sleeve t-shirts available through boot boys biz.

this 12 inch brings together three pioneers of melbourne techno seen. zen paradox aka steve law with his long detroit flavoured track “shadow sculptor”. voiteck’s “wobble plate” echoes the style of robert hood, a relentless groove. label boss jani ho brings his machine funk alive with “flight 101”.

first release of rlz music starts with fractions. a deep, groovy roller, full of textures, pads and a dubby bassline throughout. a series of solid off-beat drum patterns at the start of the track are later calmed by a set of deep, dubby chords. a2. fractions (archie hamilton remix) placing his own stamp firmly on the original, archie hamilton serves up pure, summer vibes with this remix. a deep, warm bassline and complementing series of glitchy percs build to form this solid groove. b. bee side a chunky, relaxed roller, comprising of solid 909 drum patterns and a warm 101 baseline.

mike ash returns to super rhythm trax after providing the very first release and gives us 4 authentic and acidic warehouse smashers. mike ash may be familiar from early releases on moving shadow and rising high records under a variety of pseudonyms in the early 90s but in the last 10 years has become synonymous with releasing mind blowing and true electro under his own name. when he turns his hand to acid house, the results mirror the high quality and his no nonsense approach shines through having lived and breathed the music and culture back when it was exploding in the late 80s and early 90s. in his own words i tried to keep with the original 1988/1989 vibe. i didnt use any synths / sounds / samples that weren t available past 1990. its all juno / sh-101 / 303 / jupiter / 808 / 909 / 707 / 606 and samples from the beats breaks & scratches vol 1&2inch the tracks exude a raw and strangled soul and are a bold and comfortingly honest take on the warehouse and pirate radio sound of the uk.
