next up on asking for trouble after selling out the album and re-pressing comes a four track remix ep for radioactive man’s luxury sky garden album. life-time friend of radioactive man and control tower partner dexorcist aka simon brown is first up to deliver his take on ‘sonic portal’ on the a side. his style has always been uncompromising and as a music lover and dj he s been a major influence on tenniswood’s style and taste for a long time. dexorcist turns in a detroit influenced banger which goes deep. ben pest then follows with his own take of the same track. a member of funk band pest, purveyor of wonky techno, music tech teacher and hardware enthusiast ben has also released on jerome hill’s don t’ label, i love acid and horror boogie to name a few. his take on ‘sonic portal’ is as genre bending and weighted as you’d expect. over on the b side pain struck stanley dumb remix ‘blast furnace’ - a fast and furious electro track which was released as a digital bonus to the album. they work it into a breakneck speed techno number. taste the amphetamine! completing the package biggabush (aka glyn bush) brings his dub influence to the mix. bush of rockers hi-fi connected with radioactive man during a mastering session asking to do the mix after hearing the record. the results are impressive and provide a welcome tempo and vibe change to the ep with its deep and dubby elements.

man power has proven on many occasions to be adept at all manner of different moods within the hardware house canon, but on this occasion hes particularly focusing on creating an exotic feeling out of mechanical means. tropical bastard is a fitting title for this project for not an animal records, with the original steeped in driving patterns of rhythm and melody that approximate a flavour of far flung lands while mutating the feeling into something more club-minded. lord of the isles goes one step further with a remix that ramps the modulation up to devilishly wonky levels. tropical bastard 2inch is an entirely different beast that plays on a cinematic vision of tropical escape, but with an acid thread pulsing through it. then the frank butters remix finishes the ep off with a more submerged, but equally mischievous take.

second up in doc daneeka’s walk.man series sees the all-time don, robert owens step up. two tracks, recorded in berlin that could have stepped directly out of his 90’s back catalogue. one for the lovers. the walk.man mixtape will be released in full on cassette and digital at the end of the summer.

spatial cues is a series of split singles sounding out main(void)’s and kon janson’s shared musical space. operating out of berlin and london, the two artists join forces to showcase their mutual vision of techno music. cues003 explores the darker side of the series with a focus on low frequencies, echoing percussions, and vast spaces, evoking a deep introspective motion. diffracting a manifold of sounds around its massive kick drum, cues003 a builds and releases tension through a dramatic sequence of smooth swells and intense surges. grounded by its captivating groove, cues003 b evolves around the sinister funk of fierce fm bass stabs, leading up to a powerful break that introduces a razor-edged hi-hat.

following on a trio of successes with established talent, for our fourth release manhigh takes an excursion to lesser-known regions with experimentalist desroi. previously known from eps on his eponymous imprint and total black the german newcomer quickly caught our attention. beginning with the opener, ‘indifferent’, we are introduced to his heavily sculpted, hypnotic sound world, where a rolling, repeating rhythmic framework is echoed in the higher registers with heavily-filtered delay loops, and a melodic lead line taken deeply into dub provides both a centerpiece and the basis for many other elements. another relatively new talent currently rising quickly to wider notice, phase fatale’s relaunch of ‘indifferent’ stays resolutely in his own world, a grinding, banging amalgamation of distortion, punishing in its resolve and propelled by mutated elements of the desroi’s original piece. his idea of ‘apathy’ invokes entirely more aggressive emotions than the word’s conventional usage, tightly winding bleeps around a rigid sequence kept in motion by constant effects and sporadic drum hits, which then transforms at is halfway point with the entrance of harder kicks driven by an open hat. ‘sopor’ induces trance states more than it does sleep, sophisticated applications of delay effects and patient acid combine for a deep, inward-looking hypnotic state with momentary shifts in rhythm and color evoking the ephemeral nature of dreams.

as bpmf started making techno again, he surveyed his techno friends asking them what it was about his music they found the most annoying. the answers? tr-606 hi-hats and portamento. he proceeded to focus on these aspects of his music and today the results are here: -abide the glide volume 4- wherein bpmf is pushing all the right buttons to get the dj thinking about the sounds their pumpin. jamie morris provides an excellent dj freindly remix of -even straighter-, taking bpmf s idea and going even straighter.

after his banging ep 1 on aus, tee mangos back for the 5th installment in his tribute project, inspired by the much referenced theo parrish quote: love of the music should be the driving force of any producer, performer or dj. everything else stems from that core, that love. with that love, sampling can become a tribute, an expansion on ideas long forgotten, reconstruction, collage. time is now time is now comes off like adamski era seal rerub for the small hours. replete with hypnotic looped piano and drums sounding like they were lifted from vaughan mason s raze house archive. simply sweet sweet electronic music. make it last forever the b side is tee mango on home turf, with a selection of choice samples under his cap (from a record you might recognise), some simple loose sampled drums and a smattering of dub delay. love for this series coming from: axel boman, benji b, artwork, fred p, and a heap of others. these tribute releases sell out pretty quick, my hunch is that these will not hang about.

the other man is a unique collaboration between up-and-coming young finnish producer janne tavi the flag-bearer of ibadans next generation nd acclaimed chicago house vocal legend robert owens. this ep is a superb rare gem that bridges global distances and combines a broad range of influences. the result is lush layers of sound, relentless energy, and intricate piano riffs and stabs. owensÆ poignant vocals seal the deal on this new house classic, taking it to sublime heights. the vocal dub kicks the heat up a notch with owensÆ seductive vocals and taviÆs stunning keys and arrangement. on the b-side, new york house legend kerri chandler makes a long-awaited return on ibadan. first up is a spirited vocal version with a dynamic bassline. chandler follows it up with an instrumental take, pared down to a tool and keeping the infectious groove going with deep and satisfying flavor.

mancini and the creepers is a much needed breath of fresh air that really turned my week around from being horrendous to unreal! with the ridiculous vocal stylings of mancini throwing down some truly unorthodox rhythm, along with the unreal british-accented lyrics, this crew is pure entertainment in my mind. the rapping is done over the production crew, consisting of tommy tempa and frank law’s, beats and is put together in a great package.

born in redlands, california in 1980, marquis howell grew up in a lovely way. raised to appreciate hand-me-downs, secondhand goods & older influences, he started imitating chuck berry riffs on air guitar in elementary school to impress the girls. having little to no luck with the invisible instrument & with many promises & persuasions, his parents bought him his first guitar. marquis took lessons at the local guitar shop and as often as possible he would practice 4 or more hours a day.
