imagine a collab between cabaret voltaire and eric copeland mixed by the scientist and you’ll start to enter the sphere of robin asselman. all spectrums explored. the off kilter dub waltz of ’16-16’ stutters into view with a heavy and heady rolling dread, whilst inaudible vocal snippets and flatlining synth lines echo and enforce a melee of repetition and danger. ‘fitness talk’ perhaps best showcases assel’s interest in dubwise production techniques, and his ability to soak up a palette of sound and turn it into something truly his own. soft familiar bass pads provide the backbone here for all out sample mayhem, a space where recognisable dub effects and sonars vibe alongside absolutely unsettling outer samples of jarring vocals and inaudible upset, purposefully mixed to jolt ears into unfamiliar territories. being the nephew of dj marcelle, this experimental approach and inspiring concept of pushing samples to the absolute limits of their origin to create a new unexplored path is clearly something that has been fed down from marcelle to robin throughout his youth....

black truffle is honored to present a new issue of annea lockwoodÆs classic 1970 tape piece tiger balm, unavailable on vinyl for over thirty years, accompanied by two exquisite unreleased works for percussion and voice. created while lockwood was living in the uk, the side-long tiger balm is a singular work within the cannon of tape music. inspired by research into the ritual function of music, the piece explores the possibility of evoking ancient communal memories through sound. breaking entirely with the dynamic language of the musique concrÞte tradition, lockwood uses a select palette of mainly unprocessed sonic elements chosen for their mysterious and erotic characteristics (a purring cat, a heartbeat, gongs, slowed down jaw harp, a tiger, a womanÆs breath, a plane passing overhead), presenting at most two sounds at once. as one sound flows organically into the next, their shared characteristics are highlighted, opening a space of dream logic and mysterious associations between nature and culture, the ancient and the modern. the b-side presents two pieces for percussion recorded here for the first time. amazonia dreaming (1987), performed by dominic donato, uses unaccompanied snare drum and voice to evoke the nocturnal soundscape of the amazon rainforest. unorthodox techniques and materials (marbles, chopsticks, a plastic jar lid) transform the snare into a resonant field of sensual textures.

alex tsiridis of cassegrain debuts on avian as rhyw. the extended ep, which represents the second outing for tsiridis under this moniker, sees the british producer pit a handful of elastic dance-floor workouts alongside a pair of more experimental, ambient reductions. despite careful processing rendering them decidedly monochrome, the dance-floor recordings maintain a curious colour and musicality. lead synth sequences drive much of the work, ducking in and out of the sonic backwater with considerable dynamism – almost hook-like in their execution, sharpened with ample distortion and melding with intricate drum work to create subtle shifts in tone and energy that propel the work forward. whilst reduced in it’s elements, like much of the best of the genre – the music sees those elements hard at work. tsiridis places atypical focus on groove, eschewing a more linear approach in favour of a kind of greyscale funk that finds its potency in the contrast between components. ‘iroquois’ and ‘aversion two’, the beatless compositions that appear on the ep isolate the ambient constituents of the work – with tonal nods to drone and noise musics whilst managing to hold on to the clandestine tunefulness that runs through the whole body of work.

with spring well and truly in the air and party season in step, mosaic records boss steve o sullivan launches mosaic s 38th release - joining forces with fellow londoner frazer campbell for a new studio collaboration. not content with letting the dust settle from his recent work alongside ricardo villalobos, o sullivan has stayed a little closer to his london home to work with frazer campbell for this latest tag team effort. a dextrous hand in the mix and producer in his own right, campbell has a passion for all things that sit on the deeper end of the house, techno and electronica spectrum. in his own words, thought emoting music is central to his mission having launched open recordings and elliot project records last year: a worthy sparring partner indeed. since the start of the year, the pair had their heads down focusing on finding a happy medium between deeply swung grooves and the airy influences of detroit - shaking out an interesting trio of tracks for their label debut. far from treading the obvious path, the main event a1 hypnotonic revels in a lighter touch as metronomic beat programming cycles endlessly to a held set of notes. off-kilter bass pulses, warped out vocals and effect splashes all intersect to keep the energy input constant as they capture one of those less frenzied moments where the very notion of time seems to hold still. make no mistake, this is a slow burn vibe. head to the flipside b1 soultonic to plunge yourself straight into hip twitching mode when the lights go down. a deep chord, syncopated hats and deftly tweaked synths echo as a full dose of shuffle inflicts its move. simple yet so effective, this track will not let you down. winding things back up a touch, the tougher edge of alleyway funk pushes the feeling on thanks to a thumping kick and a deft nod towards uk garage. met with a soft glisten of a rhodes piano and tweakish melody, the pair round things off in a boyant mood - fans of soul capsule and schatrax will no doubt agree. repeat play of this ep is recommended as its all the more rewarding for it.

hot on the heels of inre rydmen, the ep that the swedish multi-instrumentalist group tommy awards released via origin peoples in mid-june, come the remixes. drafting in a cohort of the very best, this impending release will see the likes of jonny nash, coyote and mystic jungle tribe jump on the remix duties, touching original productions with their unmistakable idiosyncrasies. bartosz kruczynski, the polish producer better known under his earth trax guise, is another name credited on the release, offering up a 15-minute epic as he reinterprets penultimate track, hans logan. also to see an appearance on this ep is the romanian eirwud mudwasser, offering up a rendition of the track ‘mike sierra foxtrot’ reworked in a similar esoteric expanse, albeit it quite a bit more lucid. oscillating electronics mesmerise and an arpeggiating synth melody gradually make way for marimbas. sweeping, elongated strums of guitar stretch out like the horizon and the dialogue between various melodic elements continues throughout as we bear witness to various transformations. irregardless of pacing, the meditative quality remaining consistent throughout each glorious edit.

light on his feet but not afraid to throw a punch when required, robin ordell rustles up three insouciant but meaty groovers for his second discobar release. auguste iii stretches languorously across the a-side, skippy hats cutting through the rolling, bass groove in his now unmistakeable style. lost in misty byways goes for a more sprightly walk in the park, but its nonchalance becomes increasingly threatened by dissonant voices and faulty background circuitry. finally, the sauntering bass on chelbergerho gives momentum to atmospherics that inhabit the border between dark and light harmony, never quite resolving but always pushing forwards into the morning sunshine. for robin ordell and discobar, the summer has definitely begun.

2012er deluxe lp edition des 1990er debuts auf silbernem vinyl mit neuem artwork! die schwedisch amerikanische arbeitsgemeinschaft von talisman war eine der wenigen bastionen ehrlichen melodic rocks, die es mit großartigen alben auch in den 90er jahren schaffte, die vom grunge und dem kollektiven abgesang der großen musiksender errichteten windmühlen des kontra- hard rock stimmungsbarometers zu bekämpfen. talisman waren herausragend und trotz ihrer großen klasse so unaufdringlich, extravagant und eigenständig. genau deshalb war die von marcel jacob gegründete band seit beginn ihrer tage in der lage ein großes spektrum an musikliebhabern von rock bis metal, von prog bis funk zu begeistern. mit einem ausnahmesänger und songwriter wie jeff scott soto (mit dem er gemeinsam das 85er malmsteen album marching out eingespielt hatte und der fast zeitgleich mit eyes für aufsehen im genre sorgte) in seinen reihen, standen jacob und seinem neuen baby in bereits den späten 80ern alle türen der kreativität offen, und spätestens im jahre 1990, als talisman ihr großartiges debüt mit und um den jahrhunderthit i’ll be waiting veröffentlichten, strahlte die band als einer der hellsten sterne am melodic rock firmament. primitive trust is the coming together of two experienced musical minds. in one corner is will saul of the influential aus music empire, and in the other is tom mangan, aka tee mango, the producer who started millionhands record and clothing label. the pair met many moons ago and reconnected recently at a festival in morocco. they bonded over music, lunch and shared family travails - and as they both now live in somerset decided a little local studio collaboration seemed all but essential. between them, these consumate country gentlemen have seen plenty a musical styles come and go, so decided their best route forward would be to make music to please themselves. to that end, they holed themselves up in tee mangos woodshed studio with the following ground rules: they would make music only with the gear they had (mpc 2000, ableton, roland 101, juno, fender rhodes, various fx pedals) they would trust their instincts and go with first feelings they would embrace the joy of randomness if in doubt they would ask what would carl do? with that, you have the simple but effective mo of primitive trust. these sessions have resulted in a series of three eps to be released over the course of four months. each ep will feature 2 or 3 original tracks and one fresh remix, with unique artwork and an illustration by all-around visual auteur geoff mcfetridge. using the building blocks of house, and classic techno primitive trust can do zoned out and romantic, as much as driving and heady, but with an ease that comes from experience, years in the making. while tipping their proverbial hats to the past they also look to the future with their sound, mixing samples, wigged out synthwork and propulsive rhythms to create something honest and heartfelt that will stand the test of time
